EEE-ZEE-CHEE-ZEE Grilled Cheeze

What you need:

1/8 nutritional yeast
1/8 whole wheat pastry flour
water
sea salt
bread
vegan margarine (I use Earth Balance, its vegan)
black pepper (optional)
tomato (optional)

What you do:

Put equal amounts of nutritional yeast and pastry flour in a small sauce pan (I like a little more yeast than flour). Add enough water to mix them together. Heat on medium for just a few seconds to heat it up (you only need about 1/8 cup of each for one serving. This can be adjusted to the number of sandwiches you are making). It should become like a spread (peanut butter consistency). Add sea salt to taste.
Spread this on bread and add tomato if desired. Add pepper to taste. Butter the outside of your bread (I use Earth Balance, its vegan), and grill it in a pan like you would grilled vegan cheese.
I just discovered this the other day.....I had been missing the real thing after all of these years and this is even better! The cheeze spread is good on crackers too (the only bad thing is that it kind of reminds me of Cheeze-Whiz). But delicious anyway!

SO HOW'D IT GO?

;)b  Pretty tasty for a quick sandwich.  Garlic powder is almost a must, though, IMO.  I also used this as a spread on top of a vegan burger - yummy!

I am going to post this here, because your recipe is what inspired me.

Let me start by saying I am one of those strange but few vegans who have a natural adversity to anything nutritional yeast.  Have tried it every which way from Tuesday and I cant make myself like it.  For years though I have tried and tried to come up with a substitute for these yummy "cheeze" sauces.  I finally did about a month ago. Toasted Wheat Germ.  Yep, I know it sounds strange.  I takes a bit more liquid than nutritional yeast, a lot more saltiness  and a good array of spices but it works.  So after seeing your recipe I decided it was time to have a  grilled "cheeze". I make a sauce a lot like this out of my wheat germ.  I spread it on onion bread bun and made it up just like a grilled cheese, lo and behold it got melty and gooey and good.

Thank you for the inspiration.  Even my husband, ever the omni that he is, thinks it tastes like the great processed cheese of his child hood.

Eventually I will perfect my recipe enough to share it but for now. I will just appreciate the inspiration from all the fab looking nutritional yeast recipes.

haha, thanks..they've come looking about the same each time (micro-waves or not ; )). It doesn't take long at all for the mix to come together any way that I've done it.

OH! i forgot to say, i didnt even use flour, i used 2 tbsp  of corn starch and it takes not as long to get that googey cheese consistancy.   so please dont use a microwave! it literally only takes a couple minutes, and the pan rinses out really easily( if you use nonstick) and you dont have radio active food ;D

wouldn't using whole wheat pastry flour or other flour make it healthier than cornstarch? I'm not sure how nutrient-dense cornstarch is....but I agree on the microwave thing...I think I know whats for dinner tonite!

hmm, good point L2A, i didnt think of it from that point. i've been using cornstarch for about month in lots of different things, seeing what the difference is to flour.  With the queso sauce that i do it makes it so much smoother, not grainy, and a great consistancy. sometimes is hard to work with though. But if you needed to get nutrients, flour would be better.

ps i ran outta bread, so this time (this hour, lol) i put it on some tortillas and heated them in a dry skillet, they make great quesadillas!

if you do try the flour version, it seriously only takes about 1 minute to turn into the goo.
i guess grilled cheese isn't all that healthy anyway.....

you gave me an idea...I have this stupid sandwich press that I never use-it might make a great quesadilla type sandwich or panini stylel i guess. It presses it together into these little triangles!

I did have one for dinner. I have to say your picture looks better than mine tasted! maybe its the cornstarch!

duh...it was allychristine's pic that looked so good! Mine never looks that good!

In the words of my 17 year old son..."this is freakin' awesome!"  Who would of thought something so simple could taste so good.  Next time I'll have to try it with tomatoes.

I must say that since trying this for the first time yesterday..I've already made it several times and have it down to a quicker form. I can now just throw in some nut. yeast, flour, and water..microwave and stir..spread it on the bread, add desired ingred...and grill it! We love it, L2A. Try the microwave method for the cheeze mixture-it makes it even easier.
