Fat Free Fudge Brownies

What you need: 

2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
2 cups unrefined white sugar
3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup water
1 cup unsweetened applesauce
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

What you do: 

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. In a large bowl, stir together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder and salt.
2. Pour in water, applesauce and vanilla extract; mix until well blended. Spread evenly in a 9x13" baking pan.
3. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until the top is no longer shiny. Let cool for at least 10 minutes before cutting into squares. Enjoy!
Mint, chocolate, orange, almond extract, etc. make great substitutions, as well as adding vegan chocolate chips!

SO HOW'D IT GO?

These are sinful!! I made a batch for my family and I'm afraid I've eaten most of them. I did use both whole-wheat flour and a bit all-purpose, added in in nuts and choc. chips too. It was a lot of batter for a 9x9" so I made cupcakes w/ cranberries and PB too. mm...can't wait to make it again

animalluver54375, i have not tried pastry flour but you can definitely substitute and add whole hweat pastry flour for a more nutritional brownie. also they do not have an applesauce aftertaste. the chocolate from the cocoa and sugar are more overpowering and the end result is fudgy!

i haven't tried them but i was wondering if they taste like applesauce at all cause i made desserts with applesauce and it taste like apples

These are some super yummy brownies and the first vegan ones I've made.  I used vanilla soy milk instead of water for extra flavor. I can't stay away from them!

you are so welcome! im so glad you enjoyed them! i love making them when i a need a quick chocolate craving fix (and no remorse if i eat the whole pan in one day)    ;)

but definitely try chilling them overnight. the consistency becomes more "fudgy" which i love.

since I needed motivation to go to the gym, I did what any logical lady of science would do and made brownies! I halved the recipe and poured the batter into a greased muffin pan to make "brownie bites". I thought these could have been sweeter but I used unsweetened applesauce so that might have been the reason. These were good, esp. for a fat free recipe although I added vegan dark chocolate chips to the batter for a nutritional boost  ;) The inside consistency was kind of ... 'applesaucy' I guess. They still tasted really good,and are even better the next day as they are not so applesaucy in texture...I had 2 this morning for a power breakfast ...thanks brooke for the recipe, you ARE the best ;)b
