"Just-Like-Canned-Tomato-Soup" Soup

What you need:

1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce
2 cups nondairy milk (I use soy)
1 tablespoon cornstarch or flour
1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
2 tablespoons ketchup
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon chives or oregano
salt and pepper, to taste

What you do:

1. Mix all ingredients in a pot.
2. Whisk constantly while you bring it to a boil, then quickly bring it back down and serve hot.
3. If you don't want a creamy tomato soup just add 2 cups water instead.
The ketchup is what makes it truly taste like it came from a can. Of course, you don't have to add the ketchup; I just had a craving for canned tomato soup!
I'm sure you could also use tomato paste if you wanted. Just mix it with equal parts water, then whatever that amounts to, add twice as much nondairy milk.

I recently bought one of the new Daiya wedges and tried it in a grilled cheese. It was good, but it was missing something. I found this recipe and made it along with a grilled cheese and ohmuhgawsh!!! It was amazing! This was almost identical to the canned stuff. I highly recommend this to anyone who ate grilled cheese and tomato soup as a kid and misses it.

I love this soup! I make it pretty often. I also put some tofutti cream cheese in it though. just a big spoonful and it makes it extra delicious. :)>>>

I just came upon this recipe and I have to tell you I have been trying to come up with something like this but never thought of trying to use ketchup, sounds like just the thing I've been missing.
I'm going to try this the next time I feel like tomato soup and a grilled "cheese" sandwich, and I already know that I'll like this, thanks for adding this recipe!
I have put this into my recipe box!

Yummy... but spicy!  1 teaspoon of red pepper flakes was too much for me; I would omit them next time.  I did not add the ketchup and I used fresh chives and oregano.

I was craving a quick, easy tomato soup, and I found this and decided to try it.  Did not like!  It's probably just me, but it reminded me of the smell of a school cafeteria!  I think it may have been the ketchup.  (I remember a strong smell of ketchup from those days!) I do love ketchup, but I think that if I try this again, I'll tinker with the recipe and maybe replace the ketchup with tomato paste.  I'll also replace the oregano/chives with fresh basil.  Thanks for the recipe, and I definitely think it has potential for a quick fix. :-)

I had to make a triple batch of this soup today and it is almost all gone. Great recipe, thanks!
