The Pigs are Safe in the Barn

What you need: 

1/2 cup unbleached flour
1 tablespoon corn meal
1 tablespoon oil
1/2-1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
4 vegan hot dogs, halved (I use Smart Dogs)

What you do: 

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Mix together all ingredients (except vegan hot dogs).
2. Add water little by little until a dough ball is formed. Roll the dough out as thin as you would a tortilla.
3. Wrap the dough around each dog 1/2. Bake 12-15 minutes, until golden.
Serve with your favorite condiments. I’m attempting Thai peanut sauce.

SO HOW'D IT GO?

I used an entire package of Smart Dogs, cut them in thirds and doubled the recipe for the dough. After wrapping each of them in the dough, I glazed them in a mixture of melted vegan butter (Earth Balance) and paprika which gave them a warm, buttery golden brown look and taste. Thank you so much for this recipe, it is so good!! I uploaded two pics!!

My first vegan hotdog experence! I used yves (heard they were better). Though I baught both yves and Smart Dogs, so I'll try it with both and let ya know which I prefer. But mmmm.....these taste so much like the real thing...it's not even funny. I used to eat corndogs as a kid and these are much better.  ;)b

I used plane oats instead of cornmeal. Worked perfectly. I also spinkled some daiya cheese on top..yum...... :P

These were good and very easy! I used homemade veggie dogs, and Earth Balance instead of oil. For best results, have the oil/EB and water ice cold, and the "blankets" will come out soft and flaky.

I made this last night for my 5 year old's school lunches.
The dough was surprisingly easy to work with and the recipe turned out great!
I've never been able to get him to eat veggie dogs but he loved these and said they were really good.
What an easy solution for school lunches.. no mess and can be made ahead of time.

I took blueskygirl's suggestion to fry them lightly before rolling them up and I am glad that I did.  I had a package of Smart Dogs in the freezer and to be honest, I can't stand them.  I didn't want to waste them so I tried it this way.  After frying up the hot dogs, I sliced up some onions and caramelized them while making the dough.  To the dough I added garlic powder, sweet smoked paprika, and cumin.  I rolled out the dough and cut them into triangles, put some of the onions down first, then the dogs, and rolled them up.  I brushed them very lightly with olive oil and baked.  They came out good, but I had hoped they would brown more and the dough was a little dry.  I am going to tinker with it a bit more before I call it a complete success, but they were gone quickly so no one was complaining!  I served them with a salad and ketchup and mustard on the side along with 2 special sauces.  The first I wanted to use up some leftover taco sauce from the night before so I mixed it with a little ketchup, hoisin sauce, and orange juice.  The second sauce had veganaise, chipotle hot sauce, and red pepper flakes.  Yum!

These were so amazing that even my mother (who refuses to eat a meatless meal) requested I make her more.  My stepfather loved them too.  They were in high demand in my house.  I played with the dough here and there, adding this or that.  It was all pretty amazing, haha.  I added some Ener-G egg replacer and used more corn meal than recommended.  I also wrapped the entire thing (including the ends) in the dough.  Most people just did a thin strip around it.  We're bread people.
I wish I would've taken pictures of them.  They were very pretty, haha.

The cornmeal adds a delicious crunchy texture.

my boyfriend didn't like the crunchy texture... I told him he was out of his mind! The crunchiness was the best part of this recipe!
