The Pigs are Safe in the Barn

What you need: 

1/2 cup unbleached flour
1 tablespoon corn meal
1 tablespoon oil
1/2-1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
4 vegan hot dogs, halved (I use Smart Dogs)

What you do: 

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Mix together all ingredients (except vegan hot dogs).
2. Add water little by little until a dough ball is formed. Roll the dough out as thin as you would a tortilla.
3. Wrap the dough around each dog 1/2. Bake 12-15 minutes, until golden.
Serve with your favorite condiments. I’m attempting Thai peanut sauce.

these were cool!
I however pretty much used the entire dough recipe for only 4 half-Tofu Pups.  I like my rolls a little thicker.  But they were SO SO good.  We rolled some up with Tofutti cheese slices... just put a half a piece of cheese on the dough and rolled up the not-dog in the dough with the cheese! nom nom!

I stirred up some veganaise + spicy brown mustard + vegan ranch dressing as a dip! I'm going to fumble around with those ingredients for awhile and make some interesting sauces for these little guys.  they are so cute, so easy, and so tasty!

I'm making these this weekend using Tofu Pups! I can't friggen wait! I've been anticipating it allll weeek!  >:D


Me and the wee one tried this for lunch today -- man alive! So good!

We used Yves Hot 'N Spicy Chili (veggie) Dogs -- because they're not really spicy spicy, just more pungent and flavorful. I worried for a sec that my son wouldn't like the heat but he didn't even notice. He plowed through a couple, dipped in ranch or ketchup, and had some fruit salad for dessert.

These were cute! I added about a teaspoon of garlic powder and 1/2 teaspoon of salt to the mix. I don't know how much water I used. These are much tastier, cheaper, and healthier than those pre-packaged corndogs, and just about the only way I'll eat the soy hotdogs (they were on super super cheap manager's special and I had to get them!). The cornmeal adds a delicious crunchy texture.

Oh yeah, and I also added basil to the dough.  I think I may sub butter for oil next time.  I use Smart Balance Light, and I think it would remind me more of the "real" thing from when I was a kid.  My dad always used those Pillsbury Crescent Rolls, and they always tasted of butter.  Yum.


I used Smart Dogs...and it made me remember how much I don't really like Smart Dogs.  Buuuut I live in a town where there are very few vegan options, and that is the only option for not dogs.  Soooo when I go to a bigger city (Raleigh, next weekend), I will get some Yves.  Hopefully those will be better.


Decided to have a comfort food night to get the kids all excited! This recipe is fab! love love love the breading... we used whole wheat flour since it's what we had on hand and it was so delicious. I'm not super crazy about Smart Dogs but the kiddos are so we made those for them. For the "big kids" ( that should really read - grown folk ) we used some vegan Italian "sausages". Whoa baby. Dipped them in some Trader Joes BBQ sauce. Pure indulgence. Fun recipe!


I made these today because I wanted something quick and pigs in a blanket was one of my favorites growing up.  I brushed the dough with some earth balance and they turned out rad!  Next time I'm going to follow the advice and add some garlic.
