The Pigs are Safe in the Barn

What you need:

1/2 cup unbleached flour
1 tablespoon corn meal
1 tablespoon oil
1/2-1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
4 vegan hot dogs, halved (I use Smart Dogs)

What you do:

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Mix together all ingredients (except vegan hot dogs).
2. Add water little by little until a dough ball is formed. Roll the dough out as thin as you would a tortilla.
3. Wrap the dough around each dog 1/2. Bake 12-15 minutes, until golden.
Serve with your favorite condiments. I’m attempting Thai peanut sauce.

SO HOW'D IT GO?

I finally did get around to trying the Yves not-dogs, and I agree that they are better than the SmartDogs.

Personally, I love love love love--LOVE--Yves' "The Good Dog"s. :D They are incredible! Smokey & just the right texture! I can't recommend those enough!

i just tried some of my yves veggie dogs that were in the freezer to make these and omg are they good! yves veggie dogs are definitely the best.

i'm glad everything worked well for you :)

I'm sorta nervous about trying soy dogs. These look really really good but I tried one brand of soy dogs and they made me gag, this was when I was new to vegan and even though my taste has changed a lot I've never tried them again. What is a good brand to try? Also do these go well with ketchup?

caity123-- i used Smart Dogs, which were the only kind of vegan hot dogs I tried until recently. They're pretty good, and definitely go great with ketchup. Just a note that the texture gets chewy and the insides shrivel if you overcook them. I just tried Tofu Pups and they're good too (although I wish they were darker in color, they're really pale), I may like them better than the Smart Dogs, but I haven't tried them in this recipe. Also great with ketchup!

I have to say that I hate Smart Dogs! I know people love them, but they just taste too fake & chemical-ly to me. (I don't think they're actually full of chemicals; they just have that taste to me.) Just personal preference! :)

Anyhoo... Back to the recipe. I am chewing as I type, and WOW! :D :D :D Wow. These are awesome. I had to bake them for about 25 minutes (I think I didn't roll the dough thin enough--but they taste really good, anyway), but they took me literally 10 seconds to prepare! Thank you!!!

super easy, versatile and delicious! ;D  I added spices to the flour... sage, marjoram, a bit of thyme, cayenne; also, just some masala is great...
I added too much water the last time, so I  mixed in more whole wheat flour and a little more corn meal.  Made a nice dough, with a little extra.  With the extra dough I made six bite-size treats, stuffed with little pieces of raw broccoli flowrets, chopped olive, and chopped garlic.  When I ate these, I was happy I'd run out of veggie dogs!
Awesome recipe!!!  I'm going to make some for my nephew, he's a "picky eater"/budding vegan ;D
