Quick Tofu Bacon - No Marinating!

What you need:

1 package (about 1lb.) extra-firm silken tofu
2 tablespoons soy sauce (or slightly less with a little water to make 2 tablespoons)
1 teaspoon liquid smoke
2 tablespoons nutritional yeast
1 tablespoon oil for cooking

What you do:

The cooking times seem really important for this bacon to turn out--if the tofu isn't cooked enough it isn't chewy/crispy.
Slice the tofu into strips just under 1/4 inch thick. Place the oil in a frying pan, and lay the tofu strips in the pan. Cook the tofu for 10 minutes on one side over low-medium heat before you try to flip the strips--this way, they won't break apart. Then flip them, and cook for another 10 minutes.
Mix the soy sauce and liquid smoke in a separate dish. Remove the tofu pan from the heat (after the total of 20 minutes it just cooked) and pour the soy sauce mixture over it. Shake the pan around to make sure the tofu is thoroughly coated on both sides; put pan back on burner. Immediately sprinkle the tofu with the nutritional yeast (I only coat one side of the strips, and that seems to be plenty). Let it cook a minute or so until almost all the sauce cooks off; flip the strips and give it another minute.
Eat & enjoy! I never plain far enough ahead to marinate tofu or tempeh, and this works really well. It's slightly on the salty side, but the chewiness, texture, and taste is just right.

SO HOW'D IT GO?

This was the first time I've had bacon, vegan or otherwise, but I thought it was too salty.  The texture and everything were fine, but I think next time I will dilute the soy sauce or leave it out.  (But I tend not to like very salty things.)  Otherwise it was good!

This bacon is AMAZING!  :)>>>

As VeganMonster above me said, this bacon is awesome! It makes the best BLTs ever!  Goes really good with pancakes, too.  It never lasts long enough for me to get a picture of it.

Two very enthusiastic thumbs up!  ;)b ;)b

Oh my gosh! This is one of the best recipes that I've ever tried. So unbelievably tasty. Goes great on B.L.T.s, with pancakes, or just by itself. Tastes like bacon and is just the perfect consistency for it, too. My little sister seriously begs me to make it practically every night (and more often than not I do end up making it). I cannot believe that anyone could not absolutely love this.  :)>>>

i thought this was awesome!!!  i vaguely remember another bacon recipie similar to this one on vegweb that also has a pretty good rating.  i used this bacon for the egg mcvegans and its delish!  i'm even snacking on it before putting the sandwiches together.  i dont think soy sauce is a bad ingredient for this, i think it gives it some saltiness.  yum!

This recipe was really gross, I'm sorry. First of all, soy sauce just isn't the right flavour. Second, that much liquid smoke is unnecessary. I used my dad's liquid smoke, and apparently he uses one teaspoon for ten pounds of sausage! Plus, one must also consider the fact that tofu absorbs flavours much better than meat does, so even less is needed to give it flavour.

Perhaps it's just me, but this recipe wasn't to my taste at all, although the cooking times for the tofu seemed pretty on par.
