Sausage Crumbles

What you need:

2 tablespoons soy sauce or Tamari
1 teaspoon sage
1 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon thyme
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon fennel seeds
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/8 teaspoon black pepper
salt, to taste
1 cup boiling water
1 cup textured soy protein
2-3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

What you do:

1. In a bowl, mix together the first 9 ingredients (through salt). Pour the boiling water over the mixture.
2. Pour in the textured soy protein, mix with a fork, and let stand for 10 minutes. Fluff with a fork. Taste to see if more seasonings need to be added.
3. Put oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Add mixture, and fry until well browned. (you may need to add extra oil if the pan becomes too dry).
You now have delicious sausage crumbles! They taste great on pizza, in spaghetti sauce, and with scrambled tofu eggs.

SO HOW'D IT GO?

I never really liked sausage, but this recipe had such a wonderful combination of seasonings that I had to try it.  I didn't have onion powder, so I subbed 1/2 t onion salt and an extra 1/4 t garlic powder.  Lovely.

I was making boca sauage, and i didn't realize how awful it tastes without some spices. I looked up sausage on here and used all the recommended spices and soy sauce that this recipe called for and it tasted great! Just llike sausage (as far as i remember). I liked it so much, that the next time i made sausage, i used tvp instead of that expensive boca sausage and used this recipe to a T, and it turned out even better than the boca. If you want a good cheap recipe for sausage, this one is great. I used it in sausage gravy and biscuits, they went over really well. Everyone's asking mr to make more. Thanks!
