Smothered Tofu Steak and Onions

What you need:

1 (16 ounce) package extra firm tofu
2 tablespoons olive oil, divided
1 large onion, sliced
2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
1 tablespoon vegan Worcestershire sauce
1/4 cup water, plus additional
1 teaspoon cornstarch
salt and pepper, to taste

What you do:

1. Slice tofu into 6 even cutlets about 1/2" thick. Place on paper towel to drain. Heat nonstick pan. Add 1 tablespoon oil to pan, and add onions when oil is hot. Sauté onions until golden brown and caramelized (about 5-10 minutes).
2. Remove onions, set aside. Add other tablespoon of oil to pan, and add tofu. Fry until golden brown on both sides (about 10 minutes). Add onions back to pan with balsamic vinegar and Worcestershire sauce, and stir.
3. Mix water and cornstarch, and add to pan. Stir until thick. Add water to thin. Add salt and pepper to taste. Plate up this dish with the onions and sauce smothered over the tofu steaks. Serve with a side of roasted asparagus and a nice rice pilaf.

SO HOW'D IT GO?

I liked this recipe. It was simple, but I really think it's missing something. I'll have to play around with the ingredients a bit to see what it needs. Overall, pretty good.

Haven't made it yet but I'm probably going to add some mushrooms and carrots also and use A1 sauce ( which is vegan ). Looks good!

This was ok, I don't know that I'll be making it all the time, but it was good.  Mine didn't turn out as saucy as the pictures, so I ended up doubling up the sauce.

This was delicious. I marinated the tofu in Worcestershire, Soy Sauce, and Balsamic Vinegar overnight first. My husband didn't care for it because I forgot that he hates anything vinegary tasting but I took some to work and my skeptical co-workers loved it. Next time, I'll make it without the balsamic vinegar and maybe some more worcestershire so my husband can enjoy it.

I made this again, but baked the tofu steaks...and then added them to the sauce with onions. Much better!

Made this tonight the kids loved it.  This is a keeper. I did have a few substitutions.
I half froze the tofu (it would have taken to long to fully freeze and thaw)when I got home from the grocery then I cut it like the directions said. I weighted it down to drain the water from it and used paper towel to absorb the water. I seasoned the tofu with black pepper, red pepper, salt, onion and garlic powder. I also sprinkled the tofu with a little vegan sugar and I also used a little vegan sugar to caramelize the onions. I did not have vegan Worcestershire so I used Jamaican Pickapeppa which has tamarinds, tomatoes, onion and other seasonings in it.
The tofu was still came out a little bland to me so next time I will brush the tofu with the balsamic vinegar, Pickapeppa sauce mixture.
I fixed brown rice cooked in not beef bouillon and green peas. The sauce was awesome over the rice.  Thanks for the great recipe ;)b

My tofu tasted kind of scorched. It's not obvious or even burnt looking, in fact I am the only one that recognised it but the faint flavor was there. I have had many  trial and errors with tofu, this was an error. I've not tried to fry it before so I'm not sure what I may have done wrong. If anyone has advice I'd be greatful, for this recipe as well as other efforts. I am a "new" vegetarian, I was before for 4 years. Previously though I have was victim to side dishes and noodles. Now that I have found this site I see the possibilities opening.

Tasty recipe! I made it the other night and loved it. I ended up subbing soy sauce for the worchestershire sauce, since I couldnt find vegan substitute and it still turned out great. Even my girlfriend, who isnt a big onion fan, loved it. Served with mashed garlic potatoes and broccoli, went together like, well like steak and potatoes I guess!  8-) Big thanks!
