Sweet Barbecue Sauce

What you need:

1/2 tablespoon olive oil
1 large yellow onion, diced
pinch kosher salt
1 tablespoon vegan butter, melted
1 1/2 cups ketchup
3 or 4 tablespoons molasses
2 tablespoons dijon mustard
1 tablespoon vegan Worcestershire sauce
1 lemon, juiced (I used 3 tablespoons)
1 tablespoon liquid smoke
4 garlic cloves, minced finely
1/2 tablespoon salt free seasoning (I used Very hot Mrs. Dash)
1/2 tablespoon maple syrup, optional

What you do:

1. In a medium sized sauce pot, add olive oil. When hot, add the yellow onion, stir well to coat evenly with oil, and sprinkle with a pinch salt.
2. Stir well and let soften, stirring every 30 to 45 seconds. In a bowl, mix the rest of the ingredients together.
3. When onions are softened, add the contents of the bowl to the pan and heat. When bubbling, reduce the heat to medium low and cook at a low boil/simmer for 10 to 30 minutes.
If you're going to use it as a basting sauce for tofu or something on the grill, I would cook about 20 minutes to thicken the sauce. If you're using it for baked beans or something that will be cooked in this sauce, 10 or 15 minutes is long enough. If you're going to use it as a basting sauce for the oven, or a dipping sauce or dressing you'll want to cook it the full 30 minutes.
If you don't have the Mrs. dash very spicy (which you should try because it's amazingly awesome) add a pinch of chili flakes, 1/8 teaspoon black pepper, a pinch garlic powder, and a pinch onion powder. It's not exactly the same, but it's pretty close.
