Tempeh Tacos

What you need:

1 (8 ounce) package tempeh
oil, as needed
1 (1 ounce) packet taco seasoning (I use Lawry's taco seasoning)
1 1/4 cups water
8 taco shells
salsa, to taste
lettuce, shredded, to taste
onion, diced, to taste
tomato, sliced, to taste

What you do:

1. Grate tempeh with cheese grater. Heat frying pan with oil, and add tempeh. Cook on medium until brown, stirring occasionally.
2. Add taco seasoning and water. Cook gently until thickened.
3. Scoop into taco shells and add toppings.
Tempeh most resembles what we used to fill tacos with in our less conscious days. It is also much easier to digest than textured soy protein which people more commonly use. Find it at health food stores in the frozen section.

SO HOW'D IT GO?

THESE WERE AMAZING!!! Thank you! I have had some really tasty black bean tacos over the past few years, but these were terrific! I also did not have a grater and had to crumble them...it did not seem to pose a problem! Thank you for sharing!!! :)>>>

Tempeh is one of the first things I tried as a veggie years ago.  I just wanna add for new veggies that may be reading this classic, is that DO grate it.  Somehow, it just tastes better than simply crumbeling.  Silly but gives it a better absorbancy of those delish seasonings.

Maybe it depends on the size of the grating holes, because I make this all the time and the most recent time, I decided to give grating it a try and it ended up semi-mushy. It still tasted fine, but the texture was real weird.

This was delicious! I just made some and I'm on my 6th one.. ahh! I haven't had good tacos in a long, long time though. Easy to prepare, which is awesome because I'm a horrible cook. I don't have a grater, so I just crumbled the tempeh. Also, I only added 1 cup of water rather than 1 1/2. Thanks for this recipe! So simple, yet so scrumptious!  :P

Could I possibly make this and then freeze the left overs for later?? These sound so delicious and I want to make them later, but I'll be going out of town in a couple days.

Made these the other weekend. When frying the tempeh I added in 1 brown onion, diced and 2 cloves of garlic. This was the first time I had used tempeh in tacos, and it certainly will not be the last ;) I also used the tempeh 'mix' in wraps the next day :)

I just love this recipe, I added some kidney beans and corn. My Granny loved it and even my meat-eating sister did!

:D
amaaaazing! i've used soy crumbles in this recipe before and found them to be too salty. the grated tempeh worked so much better for making taco 'meat' in my opinion. thank you for sharing this super easy and yummy recipe! my non-veggie friends requested that i make this again very soon. ;)b
