can babies eat tofu???

we are vegetarian...husband is vegan.  i'm looking into making our 9 month old baby's food (organic babyfood in stores is ridiculously expensive, plus i would like to know where my kids food is coming from...).  i know the basics...what to buy/look for, HOWEVER i was wondering if anyone knows if baby can have tofu??  also, if anyone has any awesome babyfood recipes, feel free to share!  thank you!!

I would imagine so, and upon doing further reading it seems that this article (http://parenting.ivillage.com/baby/bnutrition/0,,3wfr,00.html) should answer your question.  Apparently legumes are not normally listed as a reccomended food for infants for the reason that they are relatively difficult to digest, however tofu is a very processed form of soy and therefore easier to stomach.  Another article states that most babies are ready to take on tofu at the age of 7-8 months, and seeing that yours is 9 months, I see no problem with sampling it to the little one.

Also, kudos to you for keeping your kid on a healthy diet.  That doesn't seem to be a very commonly enforced practice these days ...

thank you so much!!  i see no other option, than to feed my children a healthy diet.  to do anything other than that would be irresponsible and selfish.  they know no better, and if i offered them crap, ofcourse they would eat it cuz its yummy.  i'm not sayin that they dont get the occasional trip to the ice cream store etc...i gotta let them be kids...but we dont keep that stuff in our house.  my husband and i grew up in a house full of junk..luckily we have gone in the opposite direction.  thanks again!!

I like the book The Super Baby Food Book it's got lots of great ideas. (also useful for older kids)

I cut tofu into small cubes as soon as they were old enough to pick it up and eat it. I never stopped serving it to them, so it is just like cheese or potatoes to an omnivorous child.

Babies will love tofu! I would recommend serving your child the silken type first in order to make swallowing easier. Good luck!  :D
