What sorta cheese can vegans consume...and other dilemmas.!

:-\i am not sure, what sorta cheese that a vegan can consume.and another thing, what type of flour?my youngest, shes 18,is a vegan, and with xmas coming up,i need to find vegan friendly recipes to cook for her.i dont want her to feel left out...hoping someone can advise, here in canada,i am not too sure whats available.

any type of flour unless she has some type of allergy...as for cheese..usually the cheeses with no animal ingredients will say "vegan" on the label.  A lot of the soy cheeses have milk ingredients and therefore are not vegan. Just read the label and you should be fine.  And this is the perfect place to find great recipes. ;)b

As far as vegan cheese goes usually your best bet is to make cheese from a recipe, just type in vegan cheese recipes and a lot will pop up plus they taste better than store bought, try making her some sort of ethnic food like Indian food good luck ;)b

How long has she been vegan?  I read into it that she's recently become vegan.

Is there a reason she needs cheese?  Vegan cheese is kind of gross tasting, imo.  You could make a cheez sauce with nutritional yeast.  Some people like nutritional yeast and some don't, so it'd be best to check with her first.

I agree that vegan cheese is pretty gross. If you feel you must have some around for some reason.. look for Vegan Gourmet. Most of the "veggy" slice cheese you find in the grocery store aren't vegan.
Any kind of flour is fine. If you're baking, eggs are not fine, but you could use 1/4 cup pureed silken tofu, 1/4 cup soy yogurt, 1/4 cup apple sauce or mashed banana, OR 1 tbsp of ground flax seeds mixed with 3 tbsp of water per each egg you need to replace in a recipe. A lot of margarines have whey (milk protein) or other milk products in them. Earth Balance is generally the preferred choice for margarine for eating or baking. They make a lot of varieties though -- the vegan ones will be marked as such.

Best bet overall is to call your daughter and ask her to send you a grocery list.

i think it is great that you are trying to accomodate her.  a lot of parents would just write it off and tell her to eat what you cook.

Agreed! I think thats amazing!!! Most parents dont try too hard to accomidate or compeltely understand veganism. And your taking it the extra step to ask around! Awesome!  ;)b

I havent used cheese subsitues, ever. Like everyone said, watch out for things that seem vegan, but arent. I used to eat fake cheese with milk protein in it, eh, i learned my lesson in reading ingredients carefully. In most recipes, you can just take out cheese, your best bet is to do that, or look around this site if it is neccesary.

You are very sweet and considerate to want to accomodate your vegan daughter. I would have to agree and say that you ask her directly about her vegan cheese, and other food, preferences. Some like vegan cheese or nutritional yeast. Others don't.

Someone recently bought me a cheese she thought was vegan but it had casein(a milk derivative) listed in the ingredients so I didn't eat it. Best to check with her.

There are lots of hearty stews, soups, pasta and Mexican dishes that would satisfy both vegans and non-vegans. Many recipes on this site.

Also, some cookies or muffins would be a wonderful treat for her. Depending on the recipe, you can use Earth Balance or vegetable oil instead of butter, and various egg substitutes. Trader Joe's and other markets sell vegan cookies too in case you don't have time to bake them.

Hope that helps.

I agree with everyone else on accomodating your daughter like that. So sweet and helpful! I do agree to look around on this site to find some good recipes that doon't even need vegan cheese or anything like it. I think it also is a good idea what recipes your suaghter likes and maybe try to veganize it with the advice or recpes from this website or the vast internet vegan blogs. Good luck with your recipes and if you need any more help, us vegwebbers are here! They all gots some good advice!
