RAVE: Vegan restaurant in Harlem

I went to Strictly Roots today, on 123rd Street and 7th Avenue (Adam Clayton Powell Jr Blvd) and ended up staying for hours! I got there at 12pm and planned to leave around 1pm. I left at 3:45pm instead! The food was great. I tried the split pea soup ($3 for a generous medium serving - so cheap by New York standards), a dumpling ($1 and so filling). Imagine lunch in NY for only $4. Wow. Then I tried the carrot cake. I HATE carrot cake but I loved this one! I took some of the dumplings, a slice of lasagna and another split pea soup to go. This is the kind of place where the cooks come out of the kitchen to chat with customers. Friendly, friendly, friendly.  :)

Their slogan is "We serve nothing that crawls, walks, swims or flies" which is great since I eat nothing that crawls, walks,...... So if ever you're in upper Manhattan and are looking for cheap vegan slightly Caribbean inspired food, check it out. They use honey in some of their dishes so if you're a stricter vegan, be sure to ask.

Oh Awesome!  I should totally go!!

Yeah girl, you should.  ;D

I love supporting small, local businesses. The place is not fancy but it's cheap and vegan.

Cool!  I've been walking through that area lately on my longer route home for extra exercise....I'll have to stop over and check it out!  Thanks!

BTW - Who knew South Harlem was so beautiful!?  It's so much nicer than other areas of the city!  Why doesn't everyone live there?!  It makes a great walking route.

Thanks for the tip! Sounds like a GREAT place. We moved to  central MA from the DC suburbs and I really feel deprived up here as far as vegan/veggie food is concerned. Looking forward to a trip to NYC soon and will stop by this place!

They have some kind of motorized machine that goes under the ground for moving people around instead of walking in NYC I believe.

Hehe - true...We DO have the subway, buses and even cabs (when they aren't on strike!)...BUT walking is still a big part of visiting NYC!  It's very difficult to visit Gotham when you have trouble walking.

(Gotta end this post now - my kitty is BEGGING to be picked up...)

I know it was a tounge in cheek answer to be honest. I know when I went to NYC last year for 3 days I was exhausted at the end of each day from all the wolking one does, and yes I did use the subway!

We have brownstones in Albany!  We also have a nice small mostly veg*n restaurant called Peas N' Beans, and are soon going to have a strictly vegan cafe/bakery!  Come visit here!

I may be visiting NYC soon, so perhaps I'll stop by this place Cheezees  :D
