Who is going to California in August?

Stop pussyfooting around.  I want to know who all is going besides the 10 people who have said they are.
Katie and I are planning on going, but we may also use this time as vacation time, i.e. we may be spending about a week or so there.  We want to know what all there is to see in lovely San Francisco and we probably want to hang out with you, too. ;)

I already know about Millennium...anything else we would need to check out?

I was looking at prices for flights to Boston for my friends' June 2010 wedding.  If I buy them way ahead of time, they're $100.  I'm definitely headed to stalk bp.  After that I wanted to drive around.

Can you take rental cars out of the state in which they are rented on the east coast?  It'd almost seem like they'd have to have different rules there with the states being so tiny.

I'm in Boston! I assume I will still be in Boston next year, too. But in terms of rental cars, you can definitely take them out of state but you need to return them to the same place you rented them from or else you'll be charged up the wazoo.

Also, I ordered my plane tickets to SF!!!

w00t!  Plane tickets to California!!!

I was thinking of taking a roadtrip down to you because you're near the more affordable airport, but dropping the car off at the same location is around $300 for a week and a different location is $1000-$2000.  I may fly from the northeast to Atlanta, rent a car there and then drive up to Asheville.  But this is all a year from now...

What's the deal with us living in the same area and not hanging out?
I think this needs to be addressed.

It's too early to tell for me because of my work schedule, but I am going to try. This sounds like so much fun.

Logistics?
Who: (so far)
What: potluck? meet-up?
When: Date and time
Where: San Francisco restaurant or someone's home?
Any additional details?

Sorry if these details were addressed in another thread. I'm playing catch-up.

see, all i understand is we are meeting in park on aug 8 in San Fransisco. i wouldn't say a lot of the details have been figured out yet. for me, it isn't an issue b/c i have to be there for a conferance anyways. but for people coming for this, is it more "plan a vacation and on this date we will come together" kind of thing? i'm trying to figure out how planned out this is (like having a "hotel" or area of town people plan to stay in).

that is what i'm not getting about this adventure.

I think there is some talk about staying in a hostel together... yeah?

I just sent out an email to everyone registered! No need to worry or fret. It's not going to be like a planned tour, or anything. We will have a set date (the 8th) to meet and eat, and such, and a planned accommodation (but you're obviously able to stay wherever you want), and maybe some other planned things. There is a plan! I hope everyone got the email.

This all sounds like grand fun!  I'll definitely put myself on the I'll see what's going on when it gets closer list.  And I'm going to be in SF, LA and maybe Vegas next weekend, so definitely need to assess the money situation after that.

My friend is thinking about moving out there.  We're going to visit his sister in SF then fly down to LA to look at the Santa Monica area because that's where he wants to live.  We have no idea where we are staying/what we are doing when we get there.  Any suggestions for things to do considering we will be very crunched for time (arrive in SF thursday night leave LA sunday afternoon)?

in sf: well you have to go to maggiemudd if you like ice cream. other than that i would just say look at the neighborhoods and go to the ones that interest you. and you should see the GG bridge because it is totally touristy but cool. and you should go to berkeley and maybe even oakland, too (mostly berkeley) because SF isn't the only place where fun happens.

in la: i will tell you where not to go: the jewlery district. i'm not even sure why that place exists! other people probably have better la advice than me. i usually just go and look for vegan food and hang out with friends. actually, same in sf, but i tool around more there. i bet fb and kennedy have better advice on la.

both places are awesome to eat out in. you can seriously go to any google map and find wherever you are and type in vegan food to find some near you and find it. that's how i feel anyway.

Hmmmm L.A. stuff...

general touristy things to do:
beaches (malibu, santa monica, venice, etc)
theme parks (six flags, knotts, disneyland... ugh)
observatory (better than disneyland)
awesome ethnic neighborhoods (generally everywhere, but there's Koreatown, Thaitown, Little Tokyo, Little Ethiopia, Japantown , Chinatown, the de facto Chinatown in Rowland Heights, Oaxacan/Mexican stuff everywhere, Olvera Street, Filipinotown , the part of Hollywood that is pretty much Guatemalan/El Salvadorean but not named so, etc).
Shopping places (third street promenade, the grove, melrose, generally west hollywood (also happens to be the "gay area"), probably some other places I never go to
Vegan restaurants (everywhere - use happycow, pick what you like... I've been to a number of the Thai places, Chinese places, and most of the places on the west side ... oh, and Real Food Daily has a bakery. Nuff said.)

It's too bad there's no more tofu fest, because that would be the precise time it would be held. Last time I went/it existed (2007) there were THOUSANDS of people there just at that time. Everything was made of tofu! And it supported Little Tokyo. Oh well...

to me, experiencing L.A. means experiencing the culture - going to the various neighborhoods, cursing at traffic, riding in a slightly rickety and speeding Metro bus (while happening to sit next to the weirdest person on there), catching the only cloudy day in summer, hearing people who live in L.A. complain about L.A. as though they're actually going to move away anytime soon, ... but you know, some people like to go shopping and buy crap at chain stores that are in malls everywhere. Well, whatever. /end rant

Sweet, some suggestions of things to do have finally come about! ;)b

I know that we will probably be going to Millennium.  I saw a recipe that someone posted for Indian bread pizza from some place called Zante's...is that place any good and do they cater to vegans?  That pizza recipe that was posted looks freaking awesome.
