You are here

can someone please explain to me what is going on with vegweb?

Has the site moved or something?  Does everyone visit through Facebook?  I'm not on Facebook so I wouldn't know . . . .

The other day I posted three or four questions in Dish n Dine and have not yet gotten one reply. Not one!  I think my feelings are hurt.

This just strikes me as so unusual.  Definitely not the vegweb of yesteryear. Can someone fill me in?

We'd all like to know, really. Admin keeps saying the beta version of the new site is going to be up and running "soon", "next week" etc. but here we are...or rather here most of us aren't any more.
We had a spate of hack attacks and malware warnings which is keeping most folks away. They announced the new site for April and it's now well into May...but then Yvette promised us a new site years ago.
I'm sorry, I sound bitter. Perhaps I am. Because I wonder if the people who have drifted off will ever come back to what has always been a valuable resource for recipes and knowledge.

Yeah, basically the sequence of events was:

malware attacks (last fall)
"hey guys we'll be doing a new awesome secure site soon!"
malware attacks
one month worth of posts disappear, permanently (dec-jan)
"hey guys we'll be doing a new awesome secure site soon!"
malware attacks
"hey guys we'll be doing a new awesome secure site soon!"
malware attacks
"hey guys we'll be doing a new awesome secure site soon!"
malware attacks
"hey guys we'll be doing a new awesome secure site soon!"
malware attacks
"hey guys we'll be doing a new awesome secure site soon!"
malware attacks (last weekend)

the sum result being that many vegwebber's computers have been affected, or some are avoiding the site altogether, some waiting for the new version. So essentially people aren't here because they're afraid of getting a virus, or because other people aren't here (and that snowballed), or because vegweb people have been so vague and irresponsible about this whole thing that some don't care to come back.

While we've been told about this  new site for some time, it was given a due date back in January, where they said around mid-February. Now the story is that they'll be opening up a beta version (to the users who signed up for it for testing) by this last Monday, which has now been postponed to next Monday. Vegweb hopes to release the beta version publicly soon after that. I'm not sure if everyone will come back to vegweb after that all settles down... really depends on (1) the new site existing and (2) the new site actually being more secure, but the problem with vegweb not communicating with its users or taking responsibility will remain, and that's probably going to keep some away on a more permanent basis.

Anyway, glad to see you are here jkl. I'll go check out your Dine 'n' Dish posts now... I've grown a little apathetic about checking new posts because things have been so slow around here, so I didn't even notice them!

and, there are some people chatting over facebook, but it's not to the degree that it's replacing vegweb or something; you're not really missing out on anything there.

I'm still here...I can't seem to walk away from VW, malware be damned. I hope VW gets fixed soon because this is my only real source of vegan support.  :(

It's easier for me to stay on account of using a Mac. I'm not as worried about the malware. I wonder if that's what's separated who stays and who left.

What's also sad about this is:
- we had a cooking challenge going, which isn't really salvageable at this point, though props to the people who stuck with it
- we probably would have had another gift exchange by now, which was an awesome community-type thing to do. I'm not sure how soon that type of thing may come up again after whenever the new site shows up, considering it'll be tough to re-build the sense of community
- new, exciting vegan things have come out with hardly any reviews here, versus the torrent of reviews we got when daiya first came out :(

Hi thank you.

I had two malware attacks as well and they were frightening and expensive.

However, I think there is more going on.  At the present moment the screen says there are 289 guests online here.  Yabbit's thread about hating peas has gotten more than 1,000 views yet only 7 responses.  Could it be there is just a lot of lurking and no one feels compelled to post a reply.

I hope that the new site restores this community.

I've been very saddened by the recent lack of activity as well. I was very excited to become more active in the community after just reading recipes for so long, and a good portion of the forums seemed to taper off right around when I showed up. Now none of my photos have been uploading - I get error messages every time I try - which makes recipe sharing very difficult! (feels a bit pointless because hardly anyone will see them)

Of course the malware is frustrating too, but somehow I keep having confidence that that will get sorted out. For concerned PC users: GoogleChrome is good about warning you before you get to the site. I'm looking forward to the beta version though, hoping that becomes reality. Thanks to all the admin for your continued work on these projects!

I use Avast and have had no contamination, which is good, cuz VW is important to me. All my best recipes of my own are stored on here.
Yes, I know how stupid I am. Hard copies, anna.

The number of "guests online" is misleading.  You are correct that they are mostly just lurkers.  Not that there is anything wrong with lurking, it's a perfectly valid lifestyle choice.  What you should look at is the number online that are Users.  Those are probably the only people who may potentially respond to posts.  Currently there are only 3.

So who are the Guests?  They are people visiting the site and checking things out, yes?  Right now it says there are 343 of them. Is that not correct?  Or are Guests something/somebody else?

That sounds like a lot of people using the site at any one time.  So can't one of them tell me what they're having for dinner, or is that too boring?  Or maybe they're here for the recipes and not the forums, which I can understand because I used this site for years before discovering there even were forums (back in the day).

Or maybe the guests are mostly working for the evil enterprise that infects this site with malware.  Evil Guests.

The number of Users is measured by recent activity associated with a particular account, while the number of Guests is recent activity from a particular IP address (though it always seems very high, so perhaps it is just a total count of recent page loads that weren't associated with an account). In other words, Guests would include people who aren't logged in, people who don't have an account, and automated software such Google's web crawler.

Moreover, I'm pretty sure both Users and Guests get counted even if the page they loaded was from the recipes section, as opposed to the forums section. Hence the numbers probably are especially high around meal times (in time zones with significant numbers of English-speaking vegans).

I'll respond to the "what did I have for dinner" thread, but my answer isn't very inspirational :\

Yeah, I always figured "guests" includes anyone browsing any section of the site. Many people use the site without ever going near the forums (or knowing they exist), or without an account. So I think you could only count on the "users" for actual forum posts, and even then, not all of those guys are going to be forum users.

Well, in case anyone (who still visits yet didn't sign up as a beta-tester) is wondering, the beta test began yesterday. No idea when the new site will become publicly available, though.

New posts at the beta site do not seem to be copied back here, but other than a few test posts, the beta testers are fairly quiet so far, so non-testers aren't missing much. Currently at least a few weeks of posts (and all of Sweet & Sour) from here have not been copied over there, but thinking about it, one of the delays in the beta test was that they apparently were having trouble with the data migration, so they probably decided just to start the test even without all the content in place (and will finish migrating everything before officially opening it).

I suspect there will be at least a few additional features added before the beta goes public, but if any non-tester wants to know about specific features or specific content, I might be able to give a tentative answer (and if it strongly disappoints you, you'd still have a chance to contact Laura about it and/or make personal copies of the relevant data).

For example, I can't find a post where someone asked about it (so maybe I was the one wondering), but the recipe box feature currently looks like it will not be carried over. Also, the style of links have changed, so e.g. http://vegweb.com/index.php?topic=6640.0 is now http://beta.vegweb.com/recipes/brownies-1 . So, if you have links to recipes you want to keep (either in your recipe box or in your browser's bookmarks), it might be a good idea to save the actual recipes somewhere. (Though, on the beta-tester feedback form, I mentioned that I missed the recipe boxes and requested automatic link redirection. Maybe one or both will be implemented before the beta test ends.)

hey kuzu,

i'm a beta tester, and i can't figure out how we're supposed to post on the new forums. maybe that's why everyone has been so quiet?
anyway, did you find the post topic button anywhere?

I think the new site has a lot of promise :)

Wow, the old server is being really slow. I wonder if that means the hackers are up to something.. :\

Anyway, to answer your question, faunablues (if I can actually post this), no I can't find a button, but I tried guessing the URL and the error page that I got helpfully provided a link that seems to work: http://beta.vegweb.com/node/add/forum-post

oooh! thanks kuzu!

Kuzu, as a long-time VWer, I know that when major changes have been made in the past, people have lost their recipe box contents also. I don't know why but then I know a minimum amount about how things work, which is why I didn't go for the beta testing thing.
It's good to know the beta site actually exists, though.

Technically it should be possible to implement some sort of "recipe box" (really just a collection of links) on most systems and to copy over the contents even between major revisions. However, I suppose it isn't exactly a core feature, so general-purpose data migration tools might miss it. (And time/resource constraints might preclude making custom tools.)

At the moment, the closest thing on the beta site is a shopping list feature which, though it lacks labels and sorting options, is also basically a collection of links. The name, however, clearly suggests much more transitory usage, so I doubt the recipe box links will be transferred into that.

Personally, I don't have too much in my recipe box, but there were a handful I'm glad I could come back and save because I'm not sure how easily I could find them again.

there's a "Like" feature on several things on the beta, including recipes. I believe there is a way to view recipes you've "liked," which would be similar to a recipe box. My problem with that is I might "like" a recipe without wanting/being able to make it in the near future, and wouldn't add it to my recipe box for that reason. But it's similar.

I've signed up on the document to be a tester and messaged admin directly (who even suggested I sign up after I originally did anyways) never heard another thing. Nothing new about this new site.
Honestly, this is the first time ive got online in 2-3 months and sadly I only have a handful of new posts. I think its pretty pathetic how the site is basically dying. I used to be able to get on here and argue ... I mean "debate" things on the forum and get all my advice n such. Only new thing I've learned in the last year from vegweb is daiya cheese, which has finally got me kicked off the cheese habbit (which is good since I'm allergic to milk, although i'm not a vegan really)
