Hair washing

Some of us use shampoo and conditioner, some baking soda, some just water...let's chat this out!

I always used s & c until a few months ago when I used baking soda. I liked it for a few months, but then my hair just couldn't decide how to be-it was sometimes oily, sometimes dry, sometimes weird. I learned, however, that it's not normal to have my hair coming out so much. Apparently, shampoo (all different kinds over the years) made my hair come out. Not a ton, but way more than was coming out with just a baking soda scrub. I went back to s & c for a short time, but now I'm trying the water only method. It's quite annoying to have such oily hair right now, but not a huge deal to wear it up/braided...which is usually what I do anyway.

P has only used water for a few months now, and says his is way less oily. I'm going to try to see how this goes! My hair doesn't feel dirty, and smells just like water..so that's fine. It looks fine as well, just oily on top! I just rinse well, then try to scrub really well all over my head, rinse again.

People don't use deodorant...?

I just realized how high maintenance I am after reading this thread. Washing my hair daily with shampoo and conditioner, monthly cuts and colors, deodorant once or twice a day, etc etc  :-\

I'm going to blame it on the fact that from age 17-23 I worked as a receptionist in a high-maintenance hair salon  :-[.

I use baking soda for deodorant when I remember, but after quite a long time of using that if I forget it I don't seem to smell anymore... creepy magic baking soda :P

I get that effect too Theo when I have been using it for awhile. My only trouble is if I need to use a deodorant that also cuts down on sweating during the summer, then the soda will not work anymore for awhile. Right now I have given up on trying to use soda in the hottest months.

yeah...it'll be interesting when N finally realises that I'm not using deodorant.  Wonder how soon he'll notice the no shampoo.

I love that you've been here months and he hasn't worked out you aren't using deodorant yet! Hahaha awesome :D

your arm is pregnant with a lush baby!

And will give birth to a brand-new range of hair care products...which she will feel obligated to use since she's their mum!  :D

A baby that's half soap, half cast...

Haha half-caste :P

so I told Andy about this thread too - and his reaction was the same as Yabbit's hub - he just rolled his eyes - I didn't even say that I was thinking of trying it - but he had the same reaction when I started using the baking soda for deodorant....

But when I mentioned that AC's husband was washing his hair with just water, he seemed intrigued and said he'd try it, but he's afraid that his head would stink (apparently I made a comment once about his head smelling and gave him a complex)
I meant to ask him this morning if he had been trying it, but forgot....

I'd like to try it, someday, but not until my hair is dark again - these highlights really make my hair look nasty when it's greasy - even in a pony tail....

Do what you feel comfortable with. Someone else made a remark about "peer pressure" but I don't think you need to feel "less of a vegwebber" if you choose to use deoderants or soaps or shave your pits or whatever. I do, because when I don't shave and use deoderant, I smell bad. And if I notice it, so does everyone else. More than me, because after awhile you do stop noticing your own reeks. Believe me, I know. I live in a very hot country (43ºC today) where older people are not noted for washing either their bodies or their clothes, let alone wearing deoderant...and they leave clouds of stench behind when they walk down the street in the open air, at 8.30 AM.
I get my hair cut monthly for myself. I like to keep it tidy.
We all make our own choices. Don't let anyone make yours for you. And don't feel you have to explain your choices, even if they're different from other people's. The people who are different to you don't, do they?
Enjoy who you are.

I agree with Yabbit, as I usually do. I use shampoo and conditioner. I went a while in the summer without, and I didn't like it at all. I don't wear antiperspirant, but that's because I physically cannot. It gives me a bad rash. I'm going to keep on with the shampoo/conditioner.

I love this whole story.
But most of all,

Moral of the story: condoms are not for hands.

this needs to be on a t shirt.

AAAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

awesome.

wow. so many people forgoing shampoo. I have tried this before. My hair is fine after a day without washing and my bf even says it looks better but by the second day without washing i can't stand it. I have very oily skin and fine hair and it's not a good combo for not washing. But I do want to be less dependent on shampoo since I know it strips the natural oils. And I never used to use conditioner but recently my hair started feeling dry, which maybe has to do with the really hard water here. But conditioner doesn't even seem to help. So I want to improve my hair situation but I'm also scared to do just the water wash. what if you go from shampooing every day to every 3 days or something. does it still improve?

Well, my mother washes her hair every day with shampoo and conditioner. Sometimes twice. My dad only showers every day because he has an outside job. My brother just doesn't wash until someone tells him he stinks or if he's trying to impress a girl. I shower every few days. My mom has extremely oily hair. My dad's is fine. My brother doesn't get oily hair. My hair takes a few days to get oily. So, from my observations of my own family, I would think your hair would actually be more oily if you wash more often. That's just my thought, though.

While I'm nowhere ready for the no-hair-washing, I totally agree about the deoderant! Anti-persperant (which is in EVERY deoderant now) can cause breast cancer. My mom and my aunt were raised to wear deoderant 24/7 to bed, right out of the shower, all day...bla bla bla...anyways... Over the years both of them had cancerous lumps near their armpits. Scary. So yeah...no anti-persperant for me!!  ;)b

yeah, I fully hope no one feels like they 'should' be trying this, but at the same time, for those of us who are, this thread is really helpful for providing support/advice/information on the process.

I took a couple of pics last night, but work situation does not allow me to upload them today, might try tonight...

Ohh yes definitely guys, don't feel any pressure to do this if it's not your thing! I have considered it for years but always been too scared, so just jumping at the chance to do so with some moral support as I go :) If it's not something you want to do just follow our adventures through the oily tunnel* and enjoy the ride :P

*Yea that's never going away now, you've started a monster AC!

I wash mine about every three days with a cheap tea tree and mint shampoo. I don't really both conditioning any more unless I've just dyed it, and it's much happier for it, less build-up, less greasy. The latter is especially important because I use straighteners on it so any residual conditioner just makes it a grease fest.

Aluminium chlorhydrate and parabens are part of the cancer problem. I use a deoderant stick or rollon with a base of aloe vera, with no alcohol, aluminium or parabens. I pay more, but it is effective. There is also a difference between "anti perspirant" (doesn't let you sweat) and "deoderant" (avoids the stink) products. As with all things you have to read a lot of labels.

My hair is nice and gross today. I don't think it looks horrid. But I feel like everyone else will. Haha.

one time when it had been about 4 days since I had washed my hair, I said to my brutally honest friend, "I haven't washed my hair in 4 days and it still isn't dirty" she said, "um, yeah, it looks kinda gross"  lol

Last night I passed two hurdles I was concerned about!

I had a dancing event so 1) I had to get my hair into a vintage hairstyle which usually takes about half a can of hairspray and 2) dancing energetically for 5ish hours means ultra sweaty yickyness.

I didn't want to use hairspray because I was worried that I wouldn't be able to wash it out with just water and it would sabotage my experiment. So ever the inventive one I decided to try a concoction of lemon juice and sugar combed through my hair instead, and it worked surprisingly well - I managed to get tidy victory rolls that stayed up all night, though my fringe kinda flopped down a little near the end but no biggie. So I'm thrilled about that, because my hairspray is pregan and I would WAY rather use nice natural (and cheap) kitchen ingredients than that crap in my hair!

Had a shower at the end of the night, and plain ol' water got the lemon juice/sugar out no problem, and seems to have done a decent job on the sweatiness too. I'm at 5 days, and my hair feels a little different, perhaps a bit heavier than normal, but still not noticably oily or lank. And my blue is staying in awesome :D I'm loving this so far, kinda waiting nervously for the grossness to blindside me though!
