Anyone try Daiya vegan cheese yet?! Any other good vegan cheeses??

It melts and stretches. I had it in a grilled cheese sandwich and it was the most amazing thing!! It melted, got gooey and stretchy and tasted just like cheese. Weirdest thing, it's made with Cassava!? So it's soy free too. I swear, I don't work for them but this is the closest thing I've had to real cheese EVER: http://daiyafoods.com/

I also like teese, follow your heart and cheezly. Pros and cons to all of them but I can't believe how far vegan cheese has come in a few short years. Any others I should know about??? I'm always on the look out for new vegan cheeses!

i bought someee!!!! they had it in my whole foods and i made some mac and cheese and it was sooooooooooooo good!!!!! even my little sister (NOT vegan) said it was good. yayyy. yum yum yummmm i'm sold

There is a HFS about an hour from here that has it now.  Is it worth driving that far just to get it?  I've wanted to check out this store for a while anyway.  It's tiny, but they are a fully vegetarian store, and in the Midwest that is amazing.

You two are funny.  Thanks for the advice.  I'll try to go get some this week.  I just hope I don't get lost.  Lol.  At least I have GPS on my work phone.

The nice thing about living in this area is everything is less than 10 or so miles a way.  The bad thing is that in order to get to another major city, you've gotta go several hours away to see more than corn and beans.  One of these days I'm going to drive the 2+ hours to eat in a vegan/vegitarian restaurant and check out a Whole Foods and Trader Joes.

you guys said to freeze it if youre not gonna use it for a while, right?

Yes.  Sometimes I just keep it in the freezer and scrape off as much as I need at a time with a fork.

Ditto.

I made a quesadilla with hummus & Daiya today, and it was awesome.  The best use of Daiya I've found yet!  Super yummy, stretchy, and melty.

I split it up into serving size portions and put it in the freezer.  It makes it a lot easier to just take out a little bit.

Finally got some! Cheddar and Mozz.
We made grilled cheez for lunch using both. It melted well and tasted real to me. DH liked it after a few bites, but it took him a minute.
We then ordered pizza tonight...half baked (the pie), no cheez and then added the daiya mozz when we got home. cooked it for 15 min more at 400. it was awesome! Dh loved it, and Noah did too (usually doesn't like vegan cheez).

I totally agree with FB on this....I really have outgrown cheese. While I enjoyed it and can see what all the hype is about, I think i am better off making my nooches and ordering cheeseless pizza. We will probably treat ourselves to this once every couple of months, although DH might disagree and buy it every week.

See, I thought that too after the Daiya. Not that I haven't outgrown actual cheese, but I do still enjoy trying new/having some vegan cheeses. The Daiya just wasn't it for me!

I agree with the outgrown cheese thing too.  It used to be such a big deal to me, "if only there could be this perfect vegan cheese" and while I definitely like Daiya or FYH as a nice, occasional treat, they definitely are not necessary to me. I am happy there are more and more alternatives because I think having Daiya when I transitioned or when I have friends who could "just never give up cheese," would have made things a little easier.  On the other hand not having a good substitution made me try different homemade cheese sauces/blocks that I tend to like better than the store bought stuff anyways.  I like playing with recipes from The Uncheese Cookbook too. I think once you get to a point where you like the taste of homemade vegan cheese alternatives it becomes less like trying to "match the taste/texture" of the real stuff exactly and more about appreciating it for the unique tastes it has.  I had an omni friend try Daiya on quesidillas at my house and she "loved" it, and I could tell her to just go to the store and buy it without trying to explain what nootch is, where to get it, how to make a cashew cheese, etc....not that I mind doing those things, but I realize for many people those ingredients are expensive/hard to find and if they are not used to cooking the whole task can become a little daunting.  Now she could just go pick some up at the store on her way home and have it for dinner.

I picked up some of the mozzarella and cheddar at Whole Foods today, along with two of the Amy's Organic Mac and Cheeses. I shared a mac and cheese with my three-year-old for lunch, and made him cheesy bread and myself pizza for dinner. YUM. I just recently went vegan (been vegetarian off and on for years), and my son has both dairy and egg intolerances. Since my son has rarely had cheese-like things, I don't think he truly appreciated the Daiya. Myself, however, I love it! I wouldn't eat it every day, but I didn't eat dairy cheese every day either even as a vegetarian or omni. I will definitely use it when I'm cooking for things like church potlucks so that there's something my son and I can eat but that likely will go over well with omnis too.

JUST got some today, have slowly discovered that too much diary is not my tummy's friend.  Making pizza for mom's day.  I don't think this will replace occasional times I eat dairy cheese, I live in WI, I will never outgrow it!  But when I want something that normallly would have tons of cheese, ie pizza, this could be a good sub.

I finally tried the mozzarella on pizza today.  I'm not that impressed with it.  It tastes too processed for me.  I don't think I will buy it again.
