This all sounds alternately disgusting and delicious!

Our canteen was very vegetarian unfriendly. I can relate, amymylove. The most popular item were the sausage rolls - giant things filled with miscellaneous meat and HUGE chunks of fat and gristle. A large proportion of kids had two for morning tea  :-\

I used to bring my own lunch and heat them up in the microwave. The best was leftover stir-fry vegies and rice with a thick peanut and ginger sauce. Then the canteen cleaned up its act and started selling sushi!! Yum  ; :)>>>

I was one of those weird kids in school who ate just about everything the lunch ladies served up!  However, I think my favorite meal was the annual Thankgiving dinner.

The worst lunch I ever ate at school was tator tots, chicken nuggets, canned peaches and chocolate milk.  Shame on that lunch program!!!

the absolute worst in my school was when the cafe cooked spaghetti and for some reason the sickening smell of the meat sauce permeated every nook and cranny of the school, in the stairwells, the gym, everywhere! The best school lunch item was the apricots we used to get in elementary school-so delicious.

Oh man! When I was in elementary school, I used to absolutely HATE the American Chop Suey. Gross!

My school didn't start serving school lunches until I was in 4th or 5th grade. One day I brought in my money cause it was pizza day, or so the calendar said, but really.. it was "taco" day, which was actually something that resembled dog food on top of soggy tortilla chips. That was probably the worst.

My high school always made awesome mashed potatoes.  I loved the peppery brown gravy -- steaming hot.  (These were pre-veg days, of course.)  I think I ate this every day.

did anyone else ever it beef friccase?  I think that's how you spell it.  nastiness!

Wow, that's a hard question... so much to choose from... I guess what really stands out are those greasy little sausagey thingies that use to float in the greasy red congeal-ey kinda sauce that got slopped onto my spaghetti. Best lunch: when I gave up, and started having a diet soda and candy bar from the vending machine, 'cause the other options were so icky... or, wow, maybe that was the worst?! Nutritionally, probably about a tie-- jeez, I'm glad I'm a grown-up!! Poor kids...

I really hated the hamburgers and the pickles they served. The pickles never quite tasted good and the hamburgers were like rubber.

I am so disgusted by Camillus' post that I  dont know if  I can eat my dinner now.... ewwwwwww

I actually used to like the cheap pizza and the hotdogs were always really juicy and the rolls that they had were yummy.

I stopped eating school lunches for most of high school and became a vegetarian junior year.

I wasn't a "veg" as a kid.  My favorite lunch was bologna, cheese & mustard sandwiches!  Add a bag of potato chips and I was in heaven!

The worst was tuna sandwiches that got soggy.  Ick!  To this day ... can't stand soggy bread.  :)

I pretty much ate nothing but french fries for lunch all through high school and my first year of college...not so many vegan options.  ::)

I've had a lifelong milk allergy, so in elementary school, I always brown bagged it. One day - horror of horrors - I forgot my lunch, and though the cafeteria let me eat for free, THE ONLY DAIRY-FREE ITEM ON THE MENU WAS SALAD. Limp lettuce and old tomatoes. I pretty much went hungry that day.

Fish sticks, cuz I have always hated seafood! Yuck!

Thankfully, my mom packed my lunch box all through Elementary and Middle School. So I didn't have to eat the nasty overcooked corn on the cob and gross rectangular pizza they seemed to serve on a regular basis.

I was vegetarian my first year of HS and all I could eat were grilled cheese sandwiches. Which were offered as an alternative to the menu that pretty much consisted of chicken fries, chicken tenders, chicken nuggets, french fries topped with bacon and cheese, and salad topped with ranch and BACON. The grilled cheeses were so greasy they would soak through the wax paper and leave these awful grease prints all over the table. Ugh!

I don't remember the worst cafeteria lunch I've had. I think I've repressed the memory  :P I more remember the smell of the musty dishrags that they used to wipe off the tables. To this day that smell makes me gag. Although... now that i think of it my worst may have involved cream of mushroom soup. I hate that stuff.

Best "worst" lunch: In middle school, I seriously could have had a soft pretzel and lemonade every day. And this was even before I became vegetarian. And then in high school I used to buy chex mix from the vending machine if I didn't have a lunch period (I only had lunch a few days a week so I could fit in more electives!)

Best best lunch: In high school we had a salad bar that had lots of different vegetables and CHICKPEAS! Also in my senior year they always had a hot veggie option, including gardenburgers.

Although... now I'm remembering when I was at another high school for all-region orchestra, and the school had a taco bell in it. I thought getting bean burritos for lunch was just about heaven.

my mom always packed me these sandwiches... sometimes they were peanut butter and jelly, sometimes peanut butter and honey, and sometimes i got peanut butter and banana... but the best were fluffer-nutter!!!

it's a peanut butter sandwich made with marshmallow creme (fluff).  i can still enjoy this today thanks to ricemellow creme!

she would sometimes cut them into little hearts and she would write a special note to me with messages like, "good luck on that test, you can do it!  <3 mom" or a simple "i love you".

those are such great memories!

I have to say that the best lunch days were the chicken nugget days. Even in high school, when I was not a vegetarian, I loved every other Friday not for the nuggets but bc all of the rest of the school thought that they were a Chef Ramsey commodity or something. This meant while they were running, packing into the cafeteria to get their share I was leisurely walking to the coke machines and did not have to wait in line.
:-D

My small church school didn't provide lunches, but I definitely remember the worst lunches.  Sometimes my dad would get the wrong sandwich in the wrong lunchbox and I would end up with his sandwiches, always loaded with mayo (I hated it at the time!) and usually some odd concoction like peanut butter, cabbage leaves, and mayo.  I would go hungry before eating his sandwich, while he claims he was never hungry, just had to eat a "dry" sandwich.  LOL, we can laugh about it now :-)

The grossest by far for me, was the "mystery meat" loaf served in our elementary school cafeteria.  It came with gluey mashed potatoes and lumpy gravy.  I still have nightmares about it!
