the food revolution and the china study

i've read both of these books in the last three weeks!  they were both incredibly awesome, i read the food revolution first, it was a good 'get me pumped' kind of book, it was a good starter to reading the china study, especially since john robbins referenced the china study often.  it made me excited to read more about the china study.  i read these books while on tour and this past week on my familys vacation, since reading it on vacation, it got my parents interested in it and my mom started reading the china study and my dad started reading the food revolution today, my dad even told my mom 'we should seriously try to eat healthier when we get home... well you already do, i guess i need to eat healthier" yay!  i also found out that my grandfather had a qaudrouple bypass surgery when he was about my dads age, 20 years before he died of a heart attack, i think my dad is concerned that he is on the same track as his dad.  i hope he changes his diet for the better and i hope these books help encourage him!

i totally recommend reading the food revolution to anyone interested in veganism, it kind of reminded me of the intensity of 'earthlings', and i recommend the china study to anyone interested in the hard facts of being a healthy vegan.

I've read both and really enjoyed them too.  It is good that your parents are open to reading them.  I would love mine too, but my mom is "too busy" and my dad does read.  My mom says she wants to eat healthier, but never follows through  :'(, maybe I'll give her my copy of The China study and see if she picks it up to read.  I'll be mad though if she loss it.

Anyway,  glad to hear that your parents are open to the idea! ;)b

Yay!  The food revolution is my favorite!  It is so wonderful that you can be such a positive influence on your family! I wish my mom would take those books seriously...

China Study is great!  I've yet to read Food Revolution.  Putting it on my list!

I have Food Rev, but I don't own China Study.  I keep meaning to check to see if the library has it.

I have read The Food Revolution, and loved it.  I have lent it out to several of my clients, even if you aren't vegan there is so much info that effects us all

I have The China Study, but I haven't read it yet...I think it's my next read!

I haven't read the China Study, but all of us should read the Food Revolution.  It's motivating for the nonvegan and reaffirming for the vegan.

I read it, and it was great! I think it would be especially great for vegetarians thinking (or not) about veganism. I loved charts B.1 and B.2 in appendix B. Related to the honey thread..I also loved his discussion on the complexity of the body...and how it's similar to ant and bee behaviors.

In appendix C..where he's discussing Vitamin D..he has those flow charts, ya know? Well, I'm not suuurreee, but it looks like the squiggly line under "in" in the first box-VITAMIN D (in skin)..is one of those grammatical error green lines from Word! I think that's funny!!!

Since I have read the China Study, I have bought over 20 copies for friends, family & coworkers.  It is available on Amazon new for about $10 and also comes in a 6-CD audiobook format for people who are too busy to sit down and read or have a long commute ($16 new on Amazon!).  It is a GREAT persuasion tool to get “outsiders” to see the light because it focuses solely on health.  Everyone who reads the book can relate to it- we’ve all known people with cancer or people who have died of heart attacks, and we all can see America’s growing health & weight problems.  A simple solution is presented- change your diet to a vegan one and you can live a healthier life.  There is no mention of the animal rights/cruelty issues, which I think is a good thing to help plant the seed for the average American.  Unfortunately, the reality is most people are eager to listen on how to help themselves over helping animals.  I hand the book to people and say, “Read this, it’s a really good book on nutrition.”  I’ve had major success with that method- I’m sure if I had a book on the horrible realities of factory farming I’d have a lot less takers.

One of my coworkers who I convinced to read the book is in sales.  Talk about a good convert for our cause!!  I overhear him now using his sales-talk to convince people why he has changed his diet!  He has been eating a whole foods/plant based diet for a few months now and as a side effect (without even trying) has dropped some excess weight.  He can’t stop spreading the good word of eating veg, it’s great!

I just recently got engaged and I was thinking of buying copies of the China Study as a “souvenir” of our wedding to try to help spread the word even more.  I need to contact Dr. Campbell to see if he’ll give me a discount for 100+ copies.  :)

oh my goodness.  yall are not going to believe this.  greent will, because shes done it!!! since my dad read the china study, he and my mom have become vegan, he ended up buying 10 copies and sending them to close friends and family, one of his brothers, a staunch meat eater, called him up and said that hes now going vegan, and i think another one of his brothers as well!! amazing!!

the change in this family is amazing.  just 2 years ago, most of them were on the atkins diet, my grandfather passed away from a heart attack and my grandmother got diabetes and breast cancer.  in this book, they link all three of those things to a heavy meat eating diet.  its so relevant with our family.  i'm so glad that they understand and want to make a change.

wow. I've thought about giving copies of the book to people, but I was afraid I would seem too preachy. Maybe I will reconsider.

Glad to hear that hiimkelsi!  The more people that know the truth, the better!  The China Study is VERY parent friendly, and again, I think it's because it doesn't bring up any animal rights issues.  It's a book you can pass on with a casual, "Hey, check this out, there is a lot of really good research findings on diet in here."  As a matter of fact, I think Dr. Campbell never mentions the diet as a "vegan" one- he refers to it as a whole foods, plant-based diet, which is less radical sounding to most people which further helps the cause.

This has officially made the need to read list.

I loved the China Study, and also bought it for my mom, brother, cousin and uncle.
My mom and uncle have already started reducing the amount of animal products they eat. I am still waiting to hear from my brother and cousin.
The reason I feel so comfortable buying copies for folks is because it isn't a book based on ethics, but real science. It's much harder for anyone to argue with that or interpret as preachy.

now he's planning on buying the "converters" veganomicon to help them on their way!  oh im so excited!

i went to thanksgiving with these family members a couple years ago, was picked on and made fun of for being vegan, there was not a SINGLE vegan dish at dinner, not even the salad or bread, i had to go to the store and make my own dinner in someone elses kitchen that no one else would even try because it wasnt "traditional" (it was spankopita)... anyways.  you get the point.  it makes me want to invite them all over for thanksgiving at my house this year and cook a fantastic vegan thanksgiving... now the tides have turned eh??? im not a crazy hippie eh???  you all want to live a long healthy life just like me eh???

thats what i thought....

Kelsi, that is SO COOL!!!!  It's just unbelievable the lives you've saved (both human AND animal!)

GreenT, what an impact you've made on the world!  Giving it out as a wedding souvenir is a cool idea!

You're both inspiring me.  I'm getting emotional.  Happy-emotional.  :) :'(

P.S. I bought The China Study right when it came out, but have only made it about halfway through!  Makes me feel like I'm back in school whenever I pick it up.  Don't get me wrong - it's a fantastic book, but I feel since I'm already sold on the vegan diet, it's like "study"ing!
