Hey vegweb, let's talk about classic cinema! (NVR)

When I was in high school, I got way into film as art and that hasn't changed at all. I've made it a goal of mine to watch all 100 of the AFI top 100 list and I've seen over 70 of them now.

My favorites:

Wizard of Oz (the best movie ever made. ever.)
sunset boulevard
North by Northwest
Citizen Kane
The Maltese Falcon
It's a wonderful Life

foreign classics:

The Bicycle Thief
400 Blows
Metropolis
Solaris
La Dolce Vita
8 1/2
Breathless

There was a funny episode of Mysery Science Theater 3000 involving Casablanca - the movie was Overdrawn at the Memory Bank, and Raul Julia (!) played this guy in a futuristic not-really-a utopia kind of world, who escaped his mundane life by watching Casablanca and later pretending he was in the movie and playing all the roles and stuff (yes, really). The best was when he first started watching the movie while at work, and Crow says, "Hey, no watching a good movie in your bad movie!"

One of hte best MST3K's ever... and one of the best movies ever in Casablanca.

Indescribable is the perfect word for it (how's that for irony?). There are so many intangibles in that film, combined with good, basic storytelling and a strong appeal to basic human emotions.

Just wow.

wow indeed.

Casablanca is playing near where I live at an outdoor movie festival in august  - oh, to see it outdoors, on a warm summer night, on the big screen! I'm so excited... I hope to make an event of it - invite friends, make some tasty vegan treats... he he.

I love Bergman! Wild Strawberries is my favorite of his.

I watched a bunch of Bergman's movies about five or six years ago and loved them. I want to watch them all over again. Wild Strawberries and The Seventh Seal were my favorites. I remember I also watched Cries and Whispers, Fanny and Alexander, and Persona.

Ingmar Bergman passed away today.  :'(

oh, that is terrible news :(

He left a legacy of fantastic films that have slowly become classics in the minds of filmgoers worldwide. RIP

I finally watched my first Bergman film just a few months ago--The Seventh Seal.  I was surprised that I liked it; it was unexpectedly funny.

I regret that I missed this thread the first time around.  I love classic movies, so I'm gonna add a few to the list (I especially liked Savvyidler's list).  Oh, and Claude Rains is the best thing about Casablanca, IMO.

The Philadelphia Story
Arsenic and Old Lace
Bringing up Baby
The Thin Man (and the sequels--I can't get enough of Nick and Nora)
Any Marx Brothers movie
Gentleman's Agreement
In the Heat of the Night
Night of the Hunter
"M" (German film starring Peter Lorre)
Laura

Awesome list Veggydog! I like all of those (except Gentleman's Agreement, which I don't believe I've ever seen). Arsenic and Old Lace is one of my favorites--Cary Grant makes such funny faces in that movie--so comical. And of course The Thin Man is the very best! In the Heat of the Night is another favorite of mine as well. M, Laura...good stuff. Good taste! I'll have to make up a list of my fave's and post them too...

How could I have forgotten these movies.  I am watching number 4 on TV right now although I own the four.

Rocky

I don't even like boxing but I loved all four Rocky movies.  Haven't seen the fifth one yet.

Nothing like the underdog winning!

I think the first Rocky is about 20 years old now if not older.

I remember liking the psychological thriller Gaslight with Ingrid Bergman.

Thats an amazing movie!

I love the old comedy's like the Topper movies(1937),My man Godfrey (1936) w/William Powell and Carole Lombard, The Awful Truth (1937) Carey Grant and Irene Dunne, and my all time favorite The Bishops Wife (1947) Carey Grant.
Oh,I almost forgot anything with Danny Kaye from the 1940's to early 1950's. He had such a classic comedic style.

When I was a kid (okay, through high school), The Inspector General was one of my favorite movies!

A classic movie popped into my head today that I saw a while back...Black Narcissus (starring Deborah Kerr)...has anyone seen this? It's a trippy movie--just so wonderfully strange and mysterious. And beautifully shot (as was The Red Shoes, done by the same directors--the colors in these movies are amazing!). Definitely worth a watch.

EDIT: Oh, and two more totally trippy classic movies that are truly original for their time: The Naked Kiss and Shock Corridor by director Sam Fuller. (Don't watch these if you're squeamish--they are not your average classic movies--they have some disturbing content.) And one of my favorites: Kiss Me Deadly with Ralph Meeker as Mike Hammer--another crazy bizarre movie (film noir) for its time.
