What DVD are you watching lately?

I have BBC's Persuasion on, but I can't really get into. I've heard thought that BBC's Sense & Sensibility is good. Of course I"ve watched the Ang Lee Emma Thompson version which is superb... I may get it this week to see  :P

I watched Food Inc. last night.   Very scary!!

Like "The World According to Monsanto" I found it so distressing I couldn't sit through all of it.

I haven't seen that yet but Capture recommended it.  I'm not sure I can handle much more though!!!

Totally want to watch Food Inc.

I just finished watching The Cove and am of course sad and mad. I hope that the film manages to do some good and get the dolphin killings stopped.  :-\

Oh, how I loved Amelie. Lovely movie.

I'm on Spring Break this week, so I've made several trips to the local library for DVDs and watched a few movies available online on Netflix. It's been nice to finally have the time to catch up on movies I've been wanting to watch for ages.

- Harvey (1950): Great movie. I have a friend who has been urging me to watch this forever. I haven't seen a lot of the "classics", especially the black and white films from the 1950s, but this was probably the best I've seen from that era. Highly recommended! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0042546/

- Juno: It seemed like everyone had seen this except me. Now I know what these people meant when they said it was an intelligent comedy. I was impressed. It was actually better than I expected.

- Up In the Air: I usually hate romantic comedies, so I was pretty skeptical going into this one. After watching the Golden Globes, however, my curiosity got the best of me and I went ahead and rented it. I was really surprised that I enjoyed it as much as I did. Obviously Clooney is always a treat to watch, but I loved that this romantic comedy deviated a little bit from the cliche, predictable plot I've grown to loathe in typical "chick flicks". Another two thumbs up! ;)b

Most of you are going to read this and go "Well, Duh!" but I needed to post it anyway.

Last night we "watched" Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day and it was the worst movie I've ever seen.  Not that the first one was exactly cerebral, but my boyfriend has testosterone and liked it, so he wanted to see the second one. I don't know if it had a different director or what, but it was absolutely terrible. It was like watching a b-grade movie. The acting was worse, the lighting seemed worse, everything was just awful. And the "storyline" was just terrible. My boyfriend couldn't even watch it, and he fast-forwarded through it to the end. He hated it, I didn't watch it, and I wasted a NetFlix choice on it! Don't even waste your time! Terrible, awful movie.

I love Harvey too. But I always wonder what is up with Elwood's sister's hands. She looks like she's wearing gloves when she's not.

Is this what you mean by the predictable plot, NS?

--Boy meets Girl
--Boy likes Girl, but Girl finds Boy obnoxious (or vice versa)
--Whoever is doing the liking fights their feelings by trying to be obnoxious
--There is a silly, embarassing (for the audience) misunderstanding that any thinking being could clear up with one question but which carries on for 45 minutes
--Someone else (usually a child or dog) reveals all and clears up the misunderstanding in the last 15 minutes
--Love reigns supreme and the final kiss dissolves into "happily ever after."

Yeah. Vomit.

You know what gets me about happily ever after? What happens when they get home and the real world hits them? Life doesn't stop just because you've gotten that kiss and triumphed over your differences. I always think that those movies need a sequel, where the couple are older, fatter, and fighting over bills. Yeah, we'd like to think the world is about that kiss with music, but how realistic can that ever be?

So true! I have enjoyed watching You've Got Mail, but I can't stop that little voice in the back of my mind saying, "How can she love him when she finds out he has been lying to her and playing mindgames, ie manipulating her, by making her think he's someone he's not?" It's not like she was going to get her bookshop back, or anything like that.

True love is when it's 3 AM and you've got food poisoning and it's everything up, everything down...both at once. And the love of your life goes out and FINDS a doctor to help. At that hour. And somehow convinces said doctor to make a housecall...to a hotel...in a city not our own. And then after holding your head and wiping up the mess, says, "I wish I could have this, so you didn't have to."

Never see that in a rom-com.

Exactly. Insert (Audience feels like CRAP inside for those forty-five minutes while the misunderstanding is resolved) in there somewhere as well. I'm far too think-y for these movies. The "happily ever after" moment always morphs into a "happily never-gonna-happen" moment for me.

I can usually turn that inner-commentary off and just let myself get lost in films, but for some reason I can't in chick flicks. I'm sitting there thinking... yea right, that chick would so be screwed in real life. Quit trying to spoon feed me paternalistic-knight-in-shining-armor love stories, mass media; I don't buy it!

Wow. That IS true love. I'd watch that movie!

sunday I watched the original Diablique, and monday night I watched Up in the air.  Both, very good.

Is that Les Diaboliques with Isabelle Huppert? Very good, very scary in a creepy don't-watch-it-alone-at-night way.

Saw Al Pacino in "Simone" yesterday. He does a good crazy! Though he did repeat a scene almost word for word that he did in "Author, Author!" in 1981 or so. "Simone", the story, was kinda Huh? until you grokked the irony. (How did he get Winona Ryder to send herself up like that?)

no, it's from 1954, Simone Signoret is the main star.  Really good, you would like it!

Checked w/DH and you are right. The Huppert one was a remake. Darn--now I gotta find the original.
If it's scarier than the one I saw--good night!

I watched He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not with Audrey Tautou (from Amelie). Great movie, and a bit of a departure from how I've seen her in roles. It was a great movie, and I don't want to tell you much more, because the big surprise of the movie, halfway through, was ruined for me by the description. I wish I could've been surprised! Good movie though.

I also watched Abdurdistan, about a Russian village and their water issues and how the women decide to make the men do something about it. It was a quirky, clever lovestory, and it was very well done.

I watched Julie & Julia the other day. The storyline was cute and all, but there were so many shots of non-vegan foods. It was a bit much.

I watched I've Loved You so Long, and it was incredible. I was spellbound from start to finish. Kristen Scott Thomas is one hell of an actress. The way the story unfolds is beautifully done. You only know as much as you need to, but you're left with more questions until the very end. Then it all finally makes sense and you can put your pieces together.

And finally, I watched The September Issue. I was pleasantly surprised at its substance. It was an easy movie to watch, not asking much of its audience. No thinking, just sitting back and seeing. Sometimes these type of movies are fun and relaxing.

Saw Barton Fink last night, a Coen Brothers film. Not my favorite Coen film, by far. There really was no plot/storyline. It was almost just a series of acts tied together. In typical Coen fashion, it ended abruptly, with no questions answered. Unlike other Coen films, I didn't care enough to sit down and work through it. Skip this one.
