Best Ever French Toast!

What you need:

1 cup nondairy milk (I use plain or vanilla soy)
1 1/2 tablespoons nutritional yeast flakes
2 tablespoons flour
2 tablespoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 teaspoon almond extract
dash cinnamon
dash apple pie spice or nutmeg
6 pieces bread

What you do:

1. Mix all the ingredients, except bread, together in a bowl with a whisk.
2. Heat up skillet. Soak bread in mixture but be careful not to over soak or else it’s going to fall apart.
3. Brown bread in skillet, flipping as needed.
Top off with fresh fruit, syrup, and powdered sugar.

SO HOW'D IT GO?

OK, so I tried reheating in the toaster and microwave for breakfast the next day. It was OK, but much better fresh.

So my final verdict is French bread, sliced about 3/4 inch thick, is the clear winner. I'll be back for more!

OMG!  Now this was great!  :D

I tried 3 different breads. I soaked them for varying amounts of time, from just moistening both sides to dunking it!

First, French bread. I sliced it at various thicknesses, and found 3/4 inch to be most to my liking. I did 6 slices and ate them all! I will definitely try this again.  ;)b ;)b

Second, a store-brand (Ovenjoy, from Safeway) whole wheat bread. I did 3 slices and found it to be a bit soggy, and this bread was dry to begin with. However, I only ate 1 piece (too much French bread!) so I've put the 2 remaining pieces in a zip type bag and I'll see how they work for breakfast.

Third, one slice of Dempster's raisin bread. (I had a bit of the mix left over.) That one's being saved for breakfast as well.

I will return and report!

This was the very first vegan recipe that I tried. My children and husband inhaled it and kept asking for more! THANK YOU SO MUCH for this recipe! ;D I am sure I will make this many times more... I want to try it with the Ezekiel (cinnamon-raisin) bread.  ;)b

Cinnamon raisin bread would be amazing!

So the nutritional yeast is genius. I never would have thought of that but it really gives it a good flavor. Great recipe!

I second the nooch-is-genius comment! Brava!

i don't have nutritional yeast flakes, can i use wheat germ?

I wouldn't. They're not the same thing and I think the wheat germ would make it taste bad.

I am not a vegan and frequently make french toast.  I tried this today on a whim and really liked it.  The eggs in traditional french toasts set quickly, making a firm exterior and leave a very eggy taste.  I like that a lot about french toast but I liked this too.  It's not an authentic taste but it is delicious and a good substitute for those who wish to limit egg intake.

This is delicious! I like my french toast crispy on the outside and moist on the inside, and this came out perfect! It is so much better than french toast made with eggs! Lovely, thanks for a great recipe!
