Death by Apple Pie

What you need:

Crust:
2/3 cup vegetable shortening
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup boiling water
1 1/2 cups flour Filling:
6 apples, thinly sliced/diced (I use Granny Smith)
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
pinch salt Topping:
1/3 cup vegan margarine
1/2 cup sugar
3/4 cup flour

What you do:

1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. For crust, cream the shortening with the salt. Add boiling water and mix. Add flour. Press crust into pie plate.
2. For filling, Fill crust with apples. In a bowl, mix together sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Sprinkle on top of apples.
3. For topping, cream together flour, sugar, and margarine. Spoon mixture on top of pie.
4. Bake for 10 minutes. Reduce to 350 degrees F and bake for another 30 minutes. Enjoy!
I like to bake this in a square casserole dish instead of a pie dish. If you want to use a premade crust, it works equally as well as the homemade one. However, the homemade crust is so easy to make, you may as well. I prefer to use granny smith apples for their tart, crisp taste. They're very good baking apples. For this recipe, I halve the sugar, using 1/4 brown sugar and 1/4 white for the filling and the topping. You may also add a smidge of cinnamon to the topping if you like.

SO HOW'D IT GO?

I made this for thanksgiving.
I cant even begin to tell you how big of a hit this was.
It was so good. The crisp top of the pie with the sweet and gooey inside.
Amazing and easy. ;D ;D

This pie is perfect. I decreased the sugar by a little and it was plenty sweet. I am making this for thanksgiving!

ALSO I used all brown sugar for both the pie and the topping.

This was great, I served it to my students and they LOVED it!  I added some oatmeal to the topping for texture.  I didn't have any kind of 'buttery spread' so I used plain old shortening, and it was still great.  Next time I am not going to slice the apples so fine, they really turned into sort of a pecan pie like mushy filling- which the kids loved.
I also used plain old water for the crust.
