Easy, Cheap and Delish Tacos

What you need: 

1/2 medium onion, chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
2 teaspoons vegetable oil
1 cup textured vegetable protein or 2 cups vegan ground beef substitute
1 1/2 tablespoons chili powder
1 teaspoon cumin
dash cayenne
1-2 teaspoons soy sauce or Bragg's
salt, to taste

What you do: 

1. In a large skillet, saute onion (see below if using vegan ground beef) in vegetable oil over medium heat for about 3 minutes. Add garlic, cook until fragrant, about 1 minute.
2. For TVP, in a small saucepan, add TVP to 1 cup boiling water. Quickly add chili powder, cumin, cayenne, and soy sauce and stir until all of the water and spices are absorbed. Incorporate the TVP mixture with the onions in the skillet. Add salt, to taste.
3. To make with ground beef substitute: Add the ground beef to the skillet with the onions. Heat through until thawed. Add chili powder, cumin, cayenne and 3/4 cup water. Raise heat to high, simmer until all of the water and spices are absorbed. Add salt, to taste.

Mmmmmmmm! is all i have to say about this recipe. oh and i added some salsa, avocado, lettuce, and chopped tomatoes; standard taco ingreds


Made this for meat eating friends and they loved it! Will make again and again.


Friggin awesome! Made this tonight for my parents and the loved it! I put the mixture in a sun dried tomato wrap with black beans and roasted red peppers. I think I need a nap now so full!  ;)b Next time I will take a picture before I devour it


SO good! So easy and fast too! This was my first experience with TVP and it was a great one! I subbed taco seasoning for the others because I didn't have any chili powder, but it turned out awesome! My bf and I had big plates of nachos and I will definitely make this one again!  ;)b



This recipe was so easy and so delicious!  I can hardly wait to try in nachos!!!


I just had this for dinner with some slight modifications.

Instead of TVP, I used some homemade seitan ground up, and, along the spices, I used a jar of vegan taco sauce. I also added half a chopped red pepper and half a chopped green pepper just at the end. This dish is absolutely glorious, and so quick to make! It's one heck of a dish if you want to trick omnis into eating vegetarian :P


Good recipe!!  Quick and easy is what I need!  I also added a cup of cooked kidney beans and a 14 ounce can of diced tomatoes.  We made taco salad out of it, and my 3 year old ate it all!  ;)b


This a hurre recipe puts the che in cheap, the ease in easy!! 8-)

We used wraps for a little mo' burrito stylistic happenin'!

Am a new vegetarian and was afraid to try these because if they didn't turn out, what would I feed my husband for dinner.  I'm so glad I took the plunge and tried these.  Thanks for a quick and delicious taco recipe that I will use for nachos and other dishes too.


I was craving Mexican food, and I had never used TVP before. Does TVP go bad because I have had it for atleast a year.. It was unopened though.

Anyways, so I made this and it looked very tan-brownish, which kind of freaked me out, plus I have never had TVP before and I was really nervous. It tasted fine, but it seemed pretty soggy. It was probably cooked wrong, but basically I enjoyed it.

Don't worry, the tvp is okay. Consider it like rice or dried beans. You never worry about them going bad. As for the color, it should be tan-brownish. You could saute it in some oil to make it more like ground beef in color and taste. Also, try adding boiling water to the tvp in a bowl (with the spices) and covering with plastic wrap. The tvp will absorb the liquid and stay moist, not dry or soggy. Then cook.
