York-A-Like Peppermint Patties

What you need:

1/3 cup corn syrup
1/4 cup vegan margarine spread, softened (I use Earth Balance whipped)
1-1/2 teaspoons peppermint oil or extract, or to taste (I use more)
4-3/4 cups powdered sugar
1 (12-ounce) bag chocolate or carob chips

What you do:

1. In a bowl, combine syrup, margarine, and peppermint; whip with an electric mixer. Add sugar by the cup while mixing. You should end up with a crumbly, sort of dry bowl of stuff.
2. Pick up a small handful of stuff and start to press it into shape. The size you want is up to you. They are so rich that smaller is better. This process is a lengthy one. It's easiest to use a cookie sheet covered with wax paper/plastic wrap to place them on.
3. Melt the chips until creamy and stir-able. Take it off the heat so it doesn't burn.
4. Coat the patties with the chocolate. This is the messy part and I haven't found an alternative way without special equipment. None the less a fun awesome recipe to do alone or with family.

Holy crap! These are AMAZING!!! I've been craving peppermint patties since becoming vegan and these taste just like the real thing! I doubled the peppermint like some other people. I also rolled the white stuff into balls and chilled them for about an hour before dipping them in the chocolate, this seemed to help them keep their shape better. Next time, I'll make them smaller so they last a little longer! Thank you! :)

I devided this recipe in 2 batches: a strawberry one and a mint one... both turned out absolutely yummy!
I used a spoon that I think is suposed to be for getting the olives out of their jar,( but to leave the vinegar in) to coat the patties in chocolate. This spoon is pierced, and it let the chocolate fall back in the pot... it was really easy, and i highly recommand to get one if you plan to make this recipe a lot, because the few first patties I coatted without it gave me a lot of trouble.  ;)

I'm going to experiment with using orange and strawberry essence in place of the peppermint essence, to make strawberry and orange fondat centres!!

I did this successfully, and made a massive number of these - strawberry, orange and coconut.  For the coconut ones, I used coconut essence, and also added about a cup of shredded coconut to the sugar mix about halfway through mixing it all together.  I'd advocate using  even more coconut!!  It makes the mixture very stiff, but not dry.  They were a big hit over Xmas, so thank you for posting this excessive and fabulous recipe!!

A note for those who, like me, don't have access to powdere (confectioner's)  sugar, or run out halfway thru:
Measure the same quantity of regular sugar, add 2 Tablespoons of cornstarch (corn flour) per cup of sugar and blitz in the blender until powdery.
I can't wait to make these...Thanx to VegLover25 for the rice syrup tip.

These are AMAZING!  :D I used peppermint flavored syrup (that I usually use to make peppermint soy lattes) instead of corn syrup and peppermint oil. I added powdered sugar until I got a smooth dough and then added a bit more to make it dryer. A friend came in and thought we were playing with play-doh, it was so easy to shape. We ended up making heart shapes, cubes, pyramids, and all kinds of weird things because it was fun. I have to agree though that the dipping in chocolate is really messy. I couldn't figure out a good way to do it.
A tip: put them in the freezer when you're done and eat them frozen. They are even more amazing (orgasmic?) that way.
Also, I think one day I will try this with regular corn syrup (omitting the peppermint part) and will put in lots of shredded coconut. I have no doubts it would taste good!

Thanks for sharing this recipe!  It's great!  My children are so excited!  :D
I substitued the corn syrup with rice syrup.  It works very well in an even exchange.  I also used 3 teaspoons of peppermint oil and they were really great.
Already my husband is thinking of people he wants me to make these for.  Oh boy!

Really good. i made one batch.. and i must have messed up somewhere added too much of somthing came out waaayy sticky and not soft and crumbely so i redid it and it came out great. i say add way more peppermint but you may need to add more powder sugar....Also. i think you should chill it for 20 minutes to make it less sticky. roll into small bite size balls. i think smaller is better though it takes more time. then chill again for 20 minutes and roll them in a spoon and the melted chocolate like it was a trufl. then i put mine back into the fridge. also do it on wax or parchment paper...

I just made a whole bunch of these for Xmas presents last weekend, and I'm going to make a whole bunch more this weekend!!  Thank you so much for the recipe, it is perfect!  I'm going to experiment with using orange and strawberry essence in place of the peppermint essence, to make strawberry and orange fondat centres!!

I found that cooling the mixture, and then forming slightly flattened ball shapes, letting them cool again, and then making sure that the chocolate was slightly cooled after melting helped make the coating in chocolate easier.  I used toothpicks - one to hold the fondant mixture, and one to gently push the pattie off the other when it was completely coated in chocolate.  Admittedly, this left a little hole in the centre of the pattie, but you can fill that in with a drip of chocolate, or leave it 'cos it definitely shows that they were home made!!
