Sausage Crumbles

What you need:

2 tablespoons soy sauce or Tamari
1 teaspoon sage
1 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon thyme
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon fennel seeds
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/8 teaspoon black pepper
salt, to taste
1 cup boiling water
1 cup textured soy protein
2-3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

What you do:

1. In a bowl, mix together the first 9 ingredients (through salt). Pour the boiling water over the mixture.
2. Pour in the textured soy protein, mix with a fork, and let stand for 10 minutes. Fluff with a fork. Taste to see if more seasonings need to be added.
3. Put oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Add mixture, and fry until well browned. (you may need to add extra oil if the pan becomes too dry).
You now have delicious sausage crumbles! They taste great on pizza, in spaghetti sauce, and with scrambled tofu eggs.

SO HOW'D IT GO?

Mmm! This recipe is so simple and so good. It was really tasty with some rice and beans in enchiladas. I am going to try it in stuffed mushrooms next. Thanks for this. I haven't used tvp in years since I discovered boca crumbles and then started making my own seitan crumbles. This is way easier.

I kind of forgot I had never liked real sausage in the first place, but this is really good for what it is. =)

:D ;)b I made this last night and WOW. I will never use anything else. This. Is. It!!! My vegan,  but meat missing, hubby loved it, as did my hungry for sausage son! My dogs and cat were begging at the stove too. So all in all it was fab! thank you so much! I did add some hot pepper (dried) to make it spicy and it was so good. :)>>>

Ok so I am making my first vegan, gluten free, pizza for my kidos and my son (6) says," hey mom, I  we can't but I kinda was wanting some, you know, "meat" on the pizza", I found this thinking  of just telling him, "not tonight", but read how easy it is so I am going to have to try it!
I am making it now and will post how it turns out! :)

I just made this without the fennel seeds. I sprinkled a little marjoram on the mixture instead. I used a little to make gravy with and my gravy was great. I plan on using the rest in a shepard's pie maybe. Thanks for the recipe. Very good and much cheaper that prepackaged crumbles.

So I'm in the 10 minute waiting period pre-frying and I'm already imagining how I'd use this if I could take the crumbles and turn them into a patty...

Anyone have any ideas?!?  I don't want to buy fake sausage for those delish sounding non-egg mcvegans :-)

I would suggest adding just enough gluten flour so that the crumbles stick together.

One more thing, I'm hoping these crumbles really add some ooomph to my quiche tonight!

Thanks for the recipe :-)

This recipe is so easy and good!  I put the crumbles on pizza and thought it tasted alot like meat sausage but without the creepy crunches you would occasionally find in the meat version that indicated you hit a mysterious chunk of cartilage, bone, etc (ick).
Does anyone know of a good way to make it stick together in bigger clumps, i.e egg replacer?

this was freakin' sweet!!! I just recently found I get very bloated every time I eat wheat so I can't have any veggie sausage from the store now.  I was so bummed, but this stuff is even better. Thank you sooooooo much. You are a beautiful person.

I was in the mood for something bad I followed this recipe and made a few adjustments, I added in little maple syrup, crushed peppers, and a splash of apple cider vinegar. Gave it a great apple-wood smoke taste. Put it between toast with better than cream cheese. Color was off, taste was Yummy!! Thanks for the recipe.  ;)b
