HUGE ferret RESCUE, 700 need homes or HELP

Yes folks, thats 700 ferrets resuced from appalling conditions at a minor mass breeder.  They've been dumped on one small little ferret rescue in Ohio.

The rescue operator is asking for help of any kind, either monetary donations or adoptions or just plain simple help with the work load.

Here is a link to a YouTube video showing conditions at this breeder (I've heard parts of it are hard to watch.  Personally I didn't watch it.): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eADmummyIkY

Anything you can do, even if it's just spreading the news to others who care, will be of great help to these ferrets. Every tiny bit helps in such a situation. Details are enclosed below

-------------------------------------PLEASE FORWARD WIDELY------------------------------------------

Doug McKay, the notorious ferret breeder in Ohio who had been the
subject of numerous protests and investigations over conditions at his
ferretry, has finally thrown in the towel by dumping 700 (yes, that is seven
hundred) unneutered, unvaccinated ferrets at a ferret rescue in Ohio. This
is, to my knowledge, the largest single ferret rescue in American history.

The guidelines for adoption to be followed are:

1. A spay/neuter contract will have to be signed and you will be
required to have them spayed/neutered within 60 days. Proof of spay/neuter
must be sent to the shelter upon completion. Kits need to be spayed/neutered
by 4 months of age. If you are picking up ferrets for someone other than
yourself you must bring a signed contract by them.

2. Due to the large quantity, I cannot accommodate special color
requests. I would prefer you take ferrets how they are grouped by cages if at
all possible.

3. There will be no adoption fees, but a donation is requested.

I will be extremely busy taking care of these ferrets so I will not
be answering e-mails other than adoption requests. If you are unable to
adopt a ferret donations are greatly appreciated and tax deductible.

Thank you in advance.

wow. poor lil guys/gals.
And when I say that I mean both the ferrets and the people having to suddenly care for 700 little creatures.

That's amazing.  Troubling but amazing- at least they'll have a chance at a better life now.

It is really depressing yet also at least now it's finally over.
Many reputable breeders in America have been trying to shut him down for a long time because of the conditions - not just basic hygenic standards, but also his lax breeding standards.  Apparently a lot of unhealthy, unmonitored inbreeding was going on.  And don't even ask about the housing or basic comforts.

From what I heard, his ferrets were rather sturdy physically compared to other mass breeders because it was LITERALLY survival of the fittest under the conditions at his farm. :'(

I can't imagine what Lori is going to do.  :( :o :'(

I'll copy and forward.  I'm not too far from Ohio.

Thanks so much.
I can't imagine she'll be able to find 700homes in Ohio alone.
Most Ohio shelters are ALREADY overcrowded without this suddenly appearing on their doorstep.  :-\
Out of staters are most welcome and encouraged.

I live in Ohio and I'll post the message on myspace... I would gladly adopt if I had the space/room but sadly I don't.  Hopefully they find good homes.

Thank you both.
ANY kind of help is deeply appreciated.  :)
Especially since they are unneutered and unvaccinated.

As much as I recognize that animals are in general overvaccinated, highly infectious ADV was spread throughout most of the America because one small ferret breeding farm previously. It's an Incurable and debiltating disease.

Finally, most of those ferrets are either in secure homes or have passed away since then, but we don't need another repeat of that...

I have spoken with Julie at the shelter today! It seems cages are no longer a priority. What is needed however would be:

MONEY- PLEASE donate to this cause asap!!
Leather Gloves- These babies were not handled much and have been scared so they are biting a bit.
Anything Throwaway- This includes bedding, potty pads, newspaper and anything else you can think of.
Fleece throws and Bedding- this is obvious
TOWELS- This is still a big need.
Volunteers- Sleep is a blessed commodity at the rescue and that means they need help! BIGTIME

The address in which to send things:

Ferret Dreemhouse

I will be shipping a box (Okay well BOXES) out to the shelter by the end of this week. If you would like send things my way (Those who are local) I can pick them up and ship them up with everything.
There is also a transport system for the ferrets. Transportation for the ferrets has been set up so for those who would like to take a group of babies. This means you may not have to drive the entire way to Ohio to pick them up only a portion. I can tell you there is a transportation chain coming in to the North Carolina / Georgia border very soon.
For more information on this or the phone number to call and arrange for transportation email me at: eval(unescape('%64%6f%63%75%6d%65%6e%74%2e%77%72%69%74%65%28%27%3c%61%20%68%72%65%66%3d%22%6d%61%69%6c%74%6f%3a%66%65%72%72%65%74%68%65%6c%70%40%63%6f%6d%63%61%73%74%2e%6e%65%74%22%3e%66%65%72%72%65%74%68%65%6c%70%40%63%6f%6d%63%61%73%74%2e%6e%65%74%3c%2f%61%3e%27%29%3b')).

Please remember these folks are barley sleeping and really need help. Let us as a loving ferret community do ALL we can to HELP asap.

If you need my assistance for anything please let me know and I will do all I can to help!

Let’s please make sure everyone sees this updated message!

more general ideas/details:

THROWAWAY THINGS: Paper towels are always in huge demand at rescues.

BEDDING: Bedding can be any soft cloth without buttons or zippers.  I frequently used my old Tshirts, or other unadorned cotton shirts in addition to normal ferret bedding.

FLEECE THROWS: PIECES of fleece can be bought cheaply at Joann's fabrics or other such related stores. But please try to wash them once before sending. Often these new materials are packaged with chemicals for storage by the manufacturer and then just put out as is for sale.

Thanks again for and and all help.  :)

NEW INFO:

WalMart gift cards are helpful.

A reminder that ferretdepot.com will give a 20% discount for orders shipped to Lori's address.

Fleece scraps - Please cut to 8" x 18". She does NOT have time to cut them so they must be pre-cut to that dimension.

She also needs trash bags, bleach, laundry detergent and cleaner.

NEW WEBSITE:

Even if you're not in a position to help out, I strongly encourage you to check out the web site and associated links. It's incredibly heart-warming to see even non-ferret-related sponsors/businesses step up to the plate to help out!

Here's the OFFICIAL Rescue Page.  The previous one, though still valid, was builtup on the spur of the moment.  Both are good references on how to help and for updates.

Below is the officially sanctioned one with pictures from the rescue.

i wish that i could help house a ferret :(. i hope that all of those cute little guys have the best of luck in finding a home :)

Consider your wish granted (sort of):

taken from the official page, http://www.ohioferretrescue.com/

# A HUGE  thank you to all those of you that shared your generosity in donations to The Dream House Shelter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
# Dream House Shelter has adopted out the bulk of the DMK ferrets and has enough resources at this time to handle their current needs.
# Please stop sending donations for DMK ferrets at this time. If you wish to support our shelter's general fund your generosity is always appreciated.

WHat's really happened is that they have been disbursed to other shelters.  They are getting more personal attention to their needs and the woman who headed the rescue is now not so over-burdened.

Overall a great and swift improvement.  :)
Thanks to all who helped!

By way of thanks, Enjoy these 2 videos of rescued ferrets getting to play for practically the first time in their life.  They're completely ferrety ie crazy:

Unfortunately, NOT over yet:

Subject: Ohio Ferret Rescue Re-Surrender 11/27/07

Sixty five (65) of the Ohio Rescue Ferrets have been RE-SURRENDERED on
11/27/07.
Sorry, I cannot give any details about where they came from.

Volunteer help is needed desperately on a daily basis at the Shelter
located in Lynx Ohio. Please, give me a call if you can come and help.

I am working very hard to find them forever homes versus going to
another shelter. If you are interested in adopting one of these please
contact me by phone. My dial up internet is not the greatest.

I will be traveling from Lynx Ohio to York Pennsylvania 12/6 - 12/9 and
can deliver some on the way.

The Ohio Ferret Rescue has cost thirty three thousand dollars ($33,000)
so far for the 586 ferrets.
It is averaging $100 a ferret in vet bills
alone: this includes distemper, rabies, coccidia test, ADV test and
having them spay/neutered. Following is where most of the expenses has
occurred: initial setup of cages (water bottles, food cups etc.) ferret
food, cleaning supplies, water, electric, phone, plumbing for water
faucet, rental of U-haul, gas, meals for workers, and labor (because
there was not enough volunteers to keep up with the upkeep of the
ferrets).

Nineteen thousand ($19,000) has come in. Ten thousand ($10,000) of that
was donated from PetsMart to go toward medical bills.

This time of the year is rough on us all but if each of you on the FML,
Yahoo Groups, Bulletin Boards, Co-workers, Family Members, and Friends
of yours would send $1 to $5.00 all the expenses of this rescue will
get covered. If I receive more funds then expenses the profit will get
divided up between the other shelters that took the kids. Good news,
Ferret's Dream House is a 501(C)(3) organization and is tax deductible.

Ways you can donate:
Send funds directly to the shelter:
1. Checks/money orders  Lori Sies, 845 Tulip Rd., Lynx OH 45650
2. Paypal:  eval(unescape('%64%6f%63%75%6d%65%6e%74%2e%77%72%69%74%65%28%27%3c%61%20%68%72%65%66%3d%22%6d%61%69%6c%74%6f%3a%72%72%33%36%33%34%40%64%72%61%67%6f%6e%62%62%73%2e%63%6f%6d%22%3e%72%72%33%36%33%34%40%64%72%61%67%6f%6e%62%62%73%2e%63%6f%6d%3c%2f%61%3e%27%29%3b'))
