Veganomicon Recipes

OK, I bought my copy of Veganomicon (cookbook from the same authors as Vegan with a Vengeance and Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World) last week at Barnes & Noble.  Over the weekend, I made my first recipes from the book.  I made the Chickpea Cutlets with the Mustard Gravy.  I also made the Tomato-Rice Soup with Roasted Garlic and Navy Beans.  For sweets, I made the Chocolate-Chocolate Chip-Walnut Cookies.  Everything was really good.  I've been having a difficult time staying away from the cookies, they're so good (very thin, crispy, chewy!).  Has anyone else here purchased this cookbook yet and made any recipes?   I'd love to hear what people are making and enjoying from this cookbook.  I really enjoy Isa Chandra Moskowitz and Terry Hope Romero's other cookbooks, and I'm looking forward to exploring more in this new book.

are the recipes really grocery store friendly?  I think i heard this, but just want to double check. first, the closest bookstore that would supply this book is an hour away, second, the closest place that i can get silken tofu, yogurt, cream cheese, sour cream, nutritional yeast, tvp, and those likes, is also an hour and a half away.  i cant use many recipes in my cookbooks because i just dont have these ingredients and i cant get them! : (  i've heard so many good things though about this cookbook, maybe i should try it out.  yeahh!

I dunno about Isa's book (cuz I'm still waiting!)
But for an amazing vegan cookbook with NO tofu, soy, TVP or NY etc. check out Donna Klein's Italian and Mediterranean cookbooks. She only has recipes that are traditionally vegan, not 'veganized' foods. They are so awesome and soooooooo good! Mmm yummy whole foods!

I also wanted to add that I LOVE those books for the exact same reason.

Oh, I love her Mediterranean cookbook! Unfortunately we're separated by about 300 miles right now, and I wanted to give some of the recipes to my school's cook... :( I want the Butternut Gratin!

I just finished eating the Caesar Salad with Roasted Garlic Croutons from Veganomicon.  Very tasty!!  My non-veg boyfriend even enjoyed this, and he's not a big salad eater.  I added some vegan "chicken" to make it more of a main dish.  This recipe makes a bunch of dressing and croutons, so I'm looking forward to the leftovers over the next couple days.  I should note that I don't know how close this is to traditional Caesar salad, as I'm not sure if I've ever had it (and if I had, it would have been 15+ years ago).  Regardless, this is an excellent salad!

Tonight, I made two more recipes from this book--Snobby Joes and Herb-Scalloped Potatoes.  Both were very good and easy to make.  I wound up making these because I happened to have all of the ingredients on hand for both.  No trip to the store is a big plus!  Has anyone else made anything from the book?

I made the mousakka with pine nut cream and it was sooo good!  It made a ton so I brought some over to my parent's house and they loved it also. It took a long time to make but well worth it.

JALAPENO CORN GRAVY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1    :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

It was so flippin' delicious. I am going to cut the jalapeno in half for thanksgiving so it's more hearty with only a little kick. For everyday use, it's perfect as is!!!

I flipped through Veganomicon in the bookstore today. Looked more appealing then Vegan With a Vengeance. It seemed more reader-friendly, more grocery store-friendly with healthy dish choices, cooking tips and suggestions.

There were a couple of scone recipes that looked really good, pumpkin-cranberry and another I think, and the wheat-free chocolate chip cookies. Anybody try those yet? Blueberry brownies? Wow.

D*mn. I have been trying so hard to curb my cookbook-buying habit (seriously, it's a problem), but I MUST have this book! I am drooling reading the reviews here & on Amazon... Aaaargh. What to do? ::) I didn't love "Vegan with a Vengeance" (I know--don't hate me), but this book looks amazing!

And Herb Scalloped Potatoes?! I have been missing scalloped potatoes something fierce lately... I need this book!

Oooh! I can't wait until my copy comes! I'm still looking for the perfect brownie.

well, this one was fabulous. i suggest adding more raspberry preserves/ frozen raspberries than it calls for because I wished there was more fruit in them. but still, they were excellent.

Let's see. I can't wait for this semester to be over so I'll have lots of time for cooking!!! Here's what I've already made:
-Caesar Salad- AWESOME. I've eaten so much lettuce in the past few days because of this awesome dressing. The croutons are good too.
-Blue Flannel Hash- Again, awesome. I added garlic, because I love garlic.

I'm planning on making:
- Smlove Pie looks really good too, but I need to find some brown rice syrup before I can make it and I need to get arrowroot from the hfs.
- Vanilla Yogurt Pound Cake - Pound cake? Vegan?
- Penne Vodka
- Roasted Eggplant and Spinach Muffuletta Sandwich
- Beanball Sub ( probably the one I'm most excited about, I literally think about this recipe all the time, I really need to make it.)

There are also a lot of good recipes for sauces and whatnot, some of which look really appetizing. This is definitely my favorite out of all their cookbooks, the recipes are much more accessible.

And of course, the chickpea cutlets.

I ran out to Barnes & Noble last night at 10 p.m. to buy this book... 8) I was going to order it on Amazon (FINALLY!), but it said it would ship in 1-3 weeks! I can't wait that long! :P It looks pretty amazing, and I wasn't expecting it to be so full of recipes! :D

One quick question: I swear I read on an Amazon review that there was a section devoted to Thanksgiving... But now I can't find it. Is there?

Well, I couldn't find it either. I just happened to have my copy with me in Boston so CeltKat could look at it and I looked in the index and at all the sections. I even thought perhaps in the menu section there was a suggested Thanksgiving menu. Nada. Perhaps there are recipes that mention their being good for Thanksgiving, but I didn't check each recipe, of course. Sorry to disappoint! :(
