diced tomatoes

Hi! A soup recipe on here calls for diced tomatoes, but i don't have any canned, diced tomatoes on hand but I do have roma tomatoes in my fridge. If i diced these roma tomatoes, could they be substituted for the canned tomatoes? Would there be any differences in taste?

also, make sure to peel and seed the tomatoes first, otherwise the skin will roll up and it's not as good to eat. an easy way is to pour boiling water over the tomatoes and let them sit for about 30 seconds. the skin comes right off.

If you have a gas stove, you can stick your tomatoes on a fork, like marshmallows, and hold them over the flame until the skin blisters and cracks...give it a good warming all round and the skin slips off easily.
