Free Rice

Have you heard of this?  http://www.freerice.com  You play a word "game" (though it seems similar to SAT prep to me!) and for every right answer, a bunch of rich companies sends 10 grains of rice to hungry people around the world.

Here's an article about it.  http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7088447.stm

For those of us who like to procrastinate- now you can do it and not feel guilty since you're doing charity!  ;)  DANGER!  ;D

This is great. I love stuff like this. I just donated 230 grains of rice. How much is that? Probably not very much... I should play more! Or do homework?? Hmm...

Fun, though I have to say some of their one-word "definitions" are not quite exact, but well...good enough to go on with.

1010 grains from me today :) this was excellent. I think I'll e-mail it to my AP Lit teacher, I bet she'd love it.

I stopped at a nice even 500, so glad I now have yet another thing to do to distract me from homework!!!

But dammit... why don't these companies just donate it... without the games?

Part of me wants to apologize, part of me wants a pat on the back for singlehandedly saving the world.  ;D

I was thinking we could have a contest to see who could produce the most rice.  I have 900 so far.  Oh man, so much for graduate school!

I know... I mean, I'm not above wasting time...

Whoever came up with this idea is a genius!  Everybody wins.  :)  I'm going to post it on my game site which gets a lot of kids who could use with expanding their vocabulary  ;)

What's "vocabulary"?

I saw this on another site and have donated about 500 grains of rice.  My vocab could definitely use some expanding. I was sitting around 28-32 the whole time

This made me laugh:

I was wondering what would happen after that number.

I was curious about how much this actually IS. Turns out, a 2 pound bag of rice has about 45,000 grains. This is a drop in the bucket, but when a lot of people play for even a small period of time, it really does add up. Really cool link, thanks for posting it.

I just got that too.
You can keep going.... it's never-ending...

I was hoping to get a prize at 10,000 or something ;)

11,040 grains of rice.  I am home sick as a dog and should be doing things (cleaning, de-cluttering etc) but don't have the energy.  This was more fun and hopefully more helpful.

I don't want to close the window so I can have an ongoing total...

Go Di!!

I used eviscerate in a sentence after playing this game.

Read the fine print. All the time you're online they are shoveling advertising at you, which probably means cookies and spyware as well. I don't know...sites like this usually have a strong smell of rodent about them, one way or another. OK, I'm hardened and cynical and paranoid, we'll agree on that...but I do smell a mustelidae.

Yabbit scared me.

Now I don't wanna play the rice game anymore... but it's so addictive!  I have over 12k grains of rice!
