You are here

To my homosexual friends:

1. Does it bother/annoy/etc. you when people use the term "gay" to mean "stupid"? It's always bothered me, since the very first time I heard it used!

2. Does it bother/annoy/etc. you when people use what they think to be gay voices and mannerisms..in a joking manner? I've noticed a lot of my co workers (straight males and females) do this. I'm just like...  ???

1. No.

2. No.

People are too uptight. Fags need thicker skin, and if they continue to let things like this get them down, we as a community will feel unnecessarily oppressed/outcasted longer than we need to be.

I thought you might feel that way!

I *heart* me some SB.

Yes and Yes.

But I choose my battles and don't get too bent out of shape about it.   Being out of the closet...way out....... over 30 years, I have very thick skin and have endured worse things.

I also agree that people can be too uptight and politically correct.  I can laugh at myself along with others, but I also know when I'm being insulted and it does bother me.

Sorry. I don't really feel comfortable calling you a fag...and I wanted to include lesbians.

one of my best mates is a gay man, and a few years ago  three of us had shirts made, with boozehag 1, boozefag 2 and boozehag 3 across the back.  I don't really drink that much anymore, but we still refer to him as our fag, and to each other as elder hag and babyhag.

that being said, there is no way I would call anyone I didn't know extremely well a fag.

Thanks, Tweety. I like Wanda Sykes now. :)

Good choice.  Don't say fag in general conversation like that.  Say "queer" or "LGBT".....although "LGBT" is too p.c. for me personally, it's being embraced because it's all encompassing.  Maybe "fag" is going to be the new "queer" and be used more in general conversations by non-gay people, but not yet.

Y'all are too PC. Maybe it's the Californian in me that just doesn't give a rat's ass in a bucket about offending anyone.

This is how most of my gay friends are - they could care less what you call them....

You might be right SB, it's probably the Southerner in me that does care about offending other people and what offends me is different probably due to location and generation.....to a point, because I'm here, and queer...deal with it...and if I'm offended, I'm not going to politely take it.    But there's a time and a place......

Yeah, there's definitely a different vibe down here. People are kinder, more polite than in California. Being gay was never really that big of an issue for me with friends, family or school. It certainly wasn't a walk in the park, but nowhere near what I'm sure others have to deal with.

I figure, there may be peeps like SB who aren't offended...but I'd rather err on the side of politeness & not offending anyone! There's enough hate in this world without unintentionally adding to it. I think it's great that SB can be so easy breezy, but many peeps can't...so again, I'd rather err on the non-bad-karma side! :)

It's not too bad in urban areas like Atlana, Raleigh, Tampa, Orlando and Miami to be out, loud and proud.  I feel very comfortable and accepted here.  It's probably like that in Nashville.  But small Southern towns scare me, except for Asheville.  I got lost in Redneck City, NC once and pulled into a gas station, that had tractors and pickup trucks  in the parking lot.....they scared me so much I bought a candy bar and didn't open my mouth.  LOL

I just wanted to throw something into the mix. In my head, it goes along with the topic at hand. Anyhow, gay friend and his bodyfriend call me "ma'am" or "lady" or "girlie"...well, I'm a guy and those terms don't bother me. Whenever we go out, I've noticed it's quite common for other gays to call each other that. While I'm not gay, I don't mind being called those things. I have noticed, also, some gay guys will call each other "bitches" but I've never used that term. I do use the "ma'am" or other phrases I mentioned earlier.

Sidenote: Whenever I go out, I always prefer to go to the places that are seen as gay bars. I actually prefer these places over the straight bars or campus clubs. I just feel a lot more comfortable hanging out in these type places. I was reading an article the other day and I've been dubbed a "queer hetero". I'm a straight person sexually who enjoys gay culture and atmosphere. Sheesh! So many titles for everybody. It's all a big blur. I used to talk about grays of life with my ex. Good times.

Later, ladies. :P

Sorry if that upsets anyone.

That's so funny, politicalmonty!! A good female friend of mine is dating someone & we're calling him a "straight gay man" cuz he has all the great qualities of a gay man (damn funny & fun for one thing) but is straight as an arrow. We now joke (quite seriously tho!) on what an ideal find it is for any woman to get a straight gay man. And here I thought we were just now making it up!! I had no idea it was known elsewhere...
So, consider yourself a "find!!!"

Quintess:

To you I say - lol! :)  I admit, I enjoy the things that are typically reserved for women. I enjoy shopping and I'm perfectly fine with helping my girl friends pick out shoes. Haha! I have no gender identity issues or anything and I like the ladies. I think my comfort (I guess that's what you could call it) comes from being raised by my mom without having a dad around. When I first moved to the big city I wondered if I was gay. Society puts thoughts into our heads that try to put us all into catgories. Straight men don't shop! What I'm saying here is - as Quintess said - I'm a striaght gay man. And damn proud! Let's get some shoes ladies! lmao! :D

You're a hot commodity, politicalmonty. You need to showcase your straight gay self.

My Younger brother is gay, and he calls himself a girl( his favorite saying is us girls just want to have fun) :)>>>....I have a big mouth, and growing up in the Northeast, in a small town, he was not really accepted >:(, many a time I threatned to kick someones ass if they didn't leave him alone. He is 8 years younger than me, and we have always been very close. being the older sister, I'm very protective of him(he will tell you he couldn't fight his way out of a paper bag)....I don't care who or what you are, if your a decent human being...thats good enough for me....

I dunno personally I'm bisexual, I'm open about that with my entire family. For a long time I thought I was a lesbian because men didn't really interest me (until I met my husband lol). I admit to this day I still say "thats so gay" I never mean it in a hurtful way, and I really don't do the "gay" voice. I usually do the valley girl type voice. Dunno why.

I think people are overly pc and it bothers, oh and the topic of fag, heres my two cents: I always laugh when someone calls me a fag or anyone else because growing up my girlfriend was from the UK and she called a cigerette a "fag". I used to ask her why she called her smokes gay, but then she explained it to me and ever since I just don't hear that word in the same way.

Like I said, thats just my two cents. I also have several glt friends who really don't mind it either. Plus I am a full supporter of equal rights, I'm gonna stop rambling now  ::)  :-X
