Newbie and I have a question....

I just recently decided to try vegetarianism (again) and have felt great for the first week....until today. This is kind of embarrassing but I find that I'm gradually getting worse and worse diarrhea and today was pretty bad. Logically I would think maybe my body isn't use to eating like this and it takes time. I'm just curious to know if anyone else experienced this same thing?

Welcome!

Yep, but I didn't worry too much about it. I still get it now and then, but it's usually when I eat a ton of fresh or steamed vegetables. Apparently they really clean out your system.

;D

But anyway, I guess it depends mostly on what your meals consist of. It seems talking about bodily functions isn't uncommon on this site so don't be embarrassed.

Welcome!

Adjusting to all the vegi's and extra fibre can be an interesting time for your body--I really hope it doesn't put you off from continuing the veg*n lifestyle--it really is wonderful!

I would suggest adding some flax to your diet--either in the form or oil or ground. I prefer putting ground flax into my morning cereal, oatmeal or pancakes--that way my body gets it right in the morning and it keeps my colan uber happy :)

Welcome again to the community and don't hesitiate to ask more questions :)

Welcome!

If you are going to add flax...do it *slooowly*...it can lead to diahhrea. You might want to hold off on it until your body settles in w/ all the other foods.
Are u eating alot of dairy still?
Have you increased the soy products in your diet?

THere are two kinds of fiber...soluable and insolable.
Too much Insoluable can give you diahhrea...it passes thru your tract w/o dissolving in water. Its in grains, wheat bran, the skins of fruits and veggies.
Soluable bulks up your stool, so it slows things down. It sort of "gels" in your intestines. Its in rice bran, oats, legumes, fruits and veggies.

Drink enough water, itll keep things moving and stop the "roller coaster" effect of diahhrea/ constipation that a new diet can sometimes begin.
The RDA recommends 25 gms of fiber a day...tho some recommend 35-40gms/ day. If u havent been eating that much to start, build it up gradually.
A probiotic supplement would likely help too.

Thankyou all for your posts! I've always *tried* to eat lots of fruit and veggies but no where near what I've been eating lately. My diet before consisted of lots of meat and cheese honeslty with some some fruit and veggies thrown in for good measure  :) A staple in my diet was chicken nachos with lots of cheese. Anyway, now its tons of fruit and veggies, soy (milk and tofu), beans, rice.... I have celiac disease so I can't eat any of the meat substitutes you find in stores (they all have wheat! ) I was in the process of going vegetarian about 10 years ago when I was diagnosed with celiac.....10 yrs ago gluten free food was all but unheard of so I found all I could really eat was meat, fruit and veggies. Now I find there are ALOT more gluten free (and vegetarian) options in stores, not to mention I think I'm a little more open minded to the eating diffrences. I've still been eating egss only because I know the lady I get the eggs from and she treats her chickens like adored pets (just as they should be)! Oh, and I do take a probiotic and flax and all that already. The celiac disease did some pretty good damage and I have ibs now so I have to take fiber and probiotics and all that. Thanks for your advice! I'm not discourage, just curious....I'm usually not quite this 'regular'  :>

I experienced that at first, too. Now my body has adjusted. I've never been so regular. It's great!!

I love fiber.  When I first went vegetarian I was GASSY!  But that goes away too...well sort of.  I never had diarrhia, but it does make it easier to go, and makes it regular, and the bathroom smells a lot less after you go too ;)b .

I hate using the restroom after a omni!  :P  Ewwwww

Being a veg*n just seems so much cleaner to me.  I feel cleaner on the inside, and what comes out doesn't seem as nasty either.  Maybe I am wierd, oh, yeah, I am wierd.  I am hormonal, so you will have to forgive me.  I am in a good mood today, but other days I feel like ripping somebodies head off...which is not very vegan of me, hey, at least I don't do it!
