Gray (Grey, white, whatever) hair

Also: do you dye your hair to cover up the gray?

I am 26 and noticed my first white hair when I was about 18. I've been getting more and more steadily but I don't dye my hair. I've been starting to think about it but I don't really want to. I just feel like it makes me look older than I am. My mom started getting white hair when she was 18 too and dyed it to have long black hair for a long time, until a little before she got married, at age...35? When she cut it short and let it go natural it was really gray. Now it's almost all white. So yeah, I know where I'm headed. I'm just curious about everyone else!

My first white ones showed up in my mid 30s.  It didn't bother me when it was just 2 or 3, but when they started becoming noticeable in my early 40s I decided to dye my hair.  While I felt a bit better that they were gone, the chemicals made my hair dry and brittle and quite frankly, it looked dyed.  I did this twice and it just did too much damage to my hair.  I will not dye it again.  It's coming in snow white, like my paternal grandmother's, and I kind of like it.

I started to go grey when I hit about 30, in part because my life underwent a total revolution and I was under a LOT of stress for about 5 years. I do colour my hair, more because my hubby likes it than anything. He says I don't look my age at all and if my hair were totally grey (which it would be now) it would add years to my age...in other words I'd look 48 instead of 35. It cracks me up that I've actually lived long enough to have grey hair, anyway.

I started to go gray at 20 due to the anestesia with my back surgery and because of that I dye my hair.

I don't know if this is a "girls-only" thread but I'll go ahead and contribute. I admit, I dye my hair. I'm wanting to say my first greys appeared in my early 20's. It was just a couple hairs at the time.

I shaved my head to try something different and to hide the grey. Let's just say it was really dumb-looking. After my hair grew back, over the years, my grey got more intense. My hair turned back to its light brown and the whole sides of my head were littered with grey.

In 2009, a friend suggested I try black. I did and love it. I've gotten several compliments from people and people say it brings out my happiness (however that's possible). I'll stick with it for a while.

i've found one on my head and then lost it, so i don't know if it was a light trick... that was around 23?

I was in my 30's when I noticed my first white hair. I have a "few" more now, but not enough for me to start dyeing my hair. I think I will once they are start becoming more pronounced, but right now they are mixed in and just kind of shimmer a little. I am O.K. with that. :)

I'll be 29 in a month and I don't have any.

I had a friend who was 13 and had a bunch. She named them all.

I don't think I'd notice if I got any. Because my hairs either blonde or dyed.

I'm 24 and I haven't noticed any. The women in my family tend not to to go gray until they are in their 50s or so. Plus I have blonde hair, so I suppose I wouldn't notice right away any ways.

I'm 38 and I've never seen one on my head.  I dyed it a couple of years ago when it was short, but other than that it's been natural and grey-less.  I'm not sure I'd notice, though, if it was only one or two strands.

I used to be strawberry blonde, but my friend says my hair is now a darker strawberry brunette.  Maybe because there's still a quality of red in it that I don't have grey.  I hear full-on redheads are more likely to go blonde.

My grandma has strawberry blond hair and no greys (she's in her 70's). I think she probably has them but they're, like HH said, more like blondes. My mom is naturally brunette but she dyes her hair (blond) a lot to cover up her greys. I want to say she started getting them when she was around her mid 30's. My sister's also a natural brunette & had greys since she was around my age. I've never had any and since my hair colour's almost exactly my grandma's I'm thinking I might not.

I've only found one a few years ago and haven't seen it since.  I'm 29.  I've never dyed my hair, and probably wouldn't even if I started going gray (too much maintenance).

HH we have the same hair colors.....before and current.
My grandma who is in her 80's has our color too and she just started turning recently. Not even really grey. more of a pretty whitish color.
I hope that will be me!
but I like grey on other people. just not me. :)

Good to hear!

My mom was light blonde and has silvery white hair.  It's really pretty.  I wouldn't mind if it I got her (non)color.

Oh man, I didn't even think about blondes and strawberry blondes. You're all lucky!

I'm 28 and have a lot of white hairs...
I dye my hair - if I didn't, I'd look much older...seriously.
I still pull them out when I notice one peeking out through my bangs - that's where I notice them the most...
I've been told that my grandma and her sisters were completely white by the time they were 30?!?!  I don't have it that bad, but still....

I've been told that the darker your hair is naturally, the earlier the greys start to appear. I could believe it...I had a friend from Venezuela who had inky-black hair but she started to go grey at 23.

hmmm i wonder what that means for me then. blonde as a kid and getting progressively darker brown as the years go by...

I know what you mean though. I know a number of people who have "black" hair and have had grey/white ones since high school.

Hmm...I don't know.  DH has black hair and hasn't had any greys yet.  He'll be 28 next week.

maybe it's just more noticeable on people with dark hair?
