Let's Overreact To The Earthquake!

My once Libya-dominated news program is now overreacting to the earthquake. So...let's all overreact!
Where were you when it happened? Did you feel it? Has anything in your house shifted an inch to the left?
TELL ME ALL OF YOUR STORIES!

Some tragic stories that I've heard so far:
"I thought someone was shaking the back of my chair."
"I thought a truck was driving by."
"I thought there was just some construction going on."
"What earthquake?"
My own heart wrenching story,"I was sitting on the couch when it started. I thought my dog was shaking the couch. Then it stopped so I forgot about it."
I felt nothing and I am sad.
But this reminds me of the stage collapse at the Indy State Fair. I realize that people died and it's horrible, but every single news station is still covering it 90% of the time, only breaking for the weather. They probably won't even mention the earthquake tonight. No time.
CNN has reported a projected death statistic of less than one. They've asked some experts what the damage is so far....there hasn't been any significant damage so far.
Less than one...which means someone reported as being "scared half to death", maybe??
I was thinking maybe someone sprained a leg or something but your explanation sounds more plausible.

haha, i saw the title for a news article - "Earthquake rocks Washington felt on East Coast" (something like that). It seems like it implies that the earthquake was in Washington state, and was felt all the way on the east coast!
Maybe the people overreacting are the same who move to California and immediately become paranoid about earthquakes. One of our classrooms is near the train tracks, and the first day where the train passed by, and some non-natives started freaking out :>

Lol and (I'm sure Heli can offer more personal insight) people in Christchurch are now a year into daily earthquakes and anything less than a 5.0 doesn't even warrant getting out of bed.
It sounds like the US news reporting would make me want to scream and dive out a window :P
Just curious, if it makes a big deal out of a little earthquake, did it make as much of a deal about the Haiti/NZ/Japan ones that were huge and serious? Or less concerned because different countries?
Theo, the big deal is that earthquakes are a west coast US thing, not east coast. People in the area I grew up in felt the quake. To the best of my knowledge, without looking it up, I don't think there has been any quake in that area in over 100 yrs. and neither that one nor this one was very bad. I live west coast now and have been through several while living in CA and a few since moving to Oregon. My last one was from Mt. Hood, a volcano. I thought the washer was off balance. Checked the washer, nope, still shaking, Oh, earthquake, no big deal. East coast it is freak out time because they are not expecting it.
Haha ok that makes a little more sense. It doesn't really compute for me, as I have grown up with them - NZ's quite a shaky little country.
It was a 5.9 and it was very exciting for those of us who have never felt an earthquake that big before. :P

I don't even think it has much to do with the fact that the east coast felt it as well. I'm trying to keep this less political and more humorous though.
But theo, the news did play the Haiti and Japan earthquakes 24/7 but they were REALLY big problems. That's kind of why I started this thread. They were starting to treat our earthquake like the other ones even though ours was pretty much no big deal at all.

I have a friend from high school who was debating on facebook whether her daughter getting her driving permit or the earthquake was the larger news story ;)b
we felt nothing but apparently the people across the street did.

DH heard about it on Radio France and came to me all concerned with his "big news." I told him, yeah I read about it on VW!! You guys always get the Untold Story!! ;D
Theo, they covered the NZ quake and Japan quake quite extensively. The one in Haiti a few years ago was big news for a long time, but more recent natural disasters on Hispanola haven't been given much more than a sound byte.
I was in band class, and we were setting up chairs and stands on the stage. I thought it was just moving chairs and such until my Facebook started freaking out.
