Taking the plunge... the OTHER plunge

My husband and I are getting ready to start trying to conceive a baby, in a few months.  This will be our first and I will be 38.

Any advice on nutrition, allergens, etc. would be greatly appreciated... I am trying to go into this informed and as healthy as possible.

Eek! Exciting!! :D
I have a bunch of resources. I'll get them together and message you with the links.

Wow!  Good luck!!  Jenniferhughes probably has all the resources I could suggest, and then some.

Actually, I only end up sending her 3 links...
What to Expect When You're Expecting is a great book (for pre-conception as well) and it is very veg-friendly.

I don't have any advice, as I've only been concentrating on NOT getting pregnant....
Just wanted to wish you and your husband luck!  (Have fun!)

Wow...one of the items covered in the book:

Orgasmic birth--making birth pleasurable

Never thought that would be possible....hmmm

I read another one... I can't find it, and don't remember the name of it... but it was written by an ob/gyn but he was very supportive of natural pregnancy/childbirth.  The next time I'm at the library I'll see if I can find it.

Yeah, don't know about that... but that book is very good.  It's a great cheerleader, know what I mean?

;D I didn't get it at first either!!!

I've been reading up on omega 3s & I think they are important for developing babies brains.

Yes, What to expect while you're expecting is a really good book & there is another one (What to expect...) for after the baby comes. I forget what it's called...sorry
Eat well & get plenty of rest.
Good luck  :)  & have fun  ;)

"Amen" on the folic acid, and find a good prenatal. Get plenty of well rounded nutrition, and eat for yourself. A baby is a perfect parasite, if it needs it, it will take it - directly from you. Make sure you keep your nutrition on par, with extra attention to calcium, and you'll be fine.

"Amen" on 'What to expect when you're expecting'. I will go a step further and recommend 'What to expect the first year'. The other book made you comfy, but the second book offered survival!

Good luck and have fun!

P.S. - When you achieve that ever desirable "knocked up" status, be sure to consult this.

Thank you, everyone... and Kbone, LOL!!

We are quite liking Before Your Pregnancy, by Amy Ogle and ... oh, forgot the other author's name, but Amy Ogle is priceless.  Thanks for the multiple endorsements of What to Expect: the hubs says it reads like a VCR manual but I will be happy to give it a shot once I've digested this one.  =)

I am starting early with folic acid... a couple months before pregnancy.  It won't hurt me and it might help, eh?

What do you all know about allergens and such?  I do eat honey (hell, I eat everything, who am I kidding-- just a lot LESS of it than others around me) and peanuts and such, and it has just occurred to me to start to fret.

Are you vegan, or just generally concerned?
I would be happy to give you any tips that might help-I have a 4 yr old who has been vegan all her life, and I was vegan before and during the pregnancy (still am).

My experience was:
-listen to your cravings! I ate a lot of raspberries for some reason, and really tried to stay in tune with any other random  things i was craving. Our bodies will tell us what they need if we listen. Don't worry about it if you get really hungry-just eat healthy foods that you crave until you are satisfied. The little person inside you will let you know when they need something!
-I didn't take prenatals. After 16 years of being a healthy vegan, I felt pretty confident that I could get all my nutritional needs met through diet. My midwives monitered me all the time, and I was always healthy and had good levels of nutrients in my system.
-I liked the Dr. Sears books better than the What to Expect... books, just because the Expecting books can be a bit fear based.
I am so lucky to have such a healthy child, and she loves being a vegan! :)
Oh, and allergies? So many people are so worried about them. My theory is that if you eat organic whenever possible and keep things in balance, why worry? I wonder if allergies are so prevalent because the non-organic versions of these foods are so funky, or people are eating way too much of one thing.
Blessings!! :)

Thank you, great response.

I am not vegan, but I do my best to eat that way as much and as often as practical.  (Those of you who are more committed may scoff and say "but it is practical!"  You are right, of course!  But not for me, not right now.)

I agree that people who are not allergic worry too much about allergies... but those who are must.  I am allergic to a huge amount of medication, so I am always a little concerned that food will be an issue.  So far the only foods I am allergic to seem to be broccoli (dang it!) and escargot (yeah, that'll matter to me... suuuuure.)

As for prenatal vitamins, I am making no bets about the nutrients in my system, but since I "feel it" if I miss a multivitamin, I presume I exist at close to threshold levels of something or other.  Might as well take 'em.  =)

Duckalucky,
If you "feel it" when you miss a multivitamin, you should have no problem "feeling it" when you are pregnant, as far as knowing what foods your body is craving.
Sounds like you already are pretty in touch! :)
