Daily Recommended Sugar Intake

Hello Everyone,

After using sparkpeople for some time I'm realizing my carbs and sugar intake is astronomical.  Based on research I've been doing, a person doing a 1200 - 1500 calorie diet, should be getting in 30-40 grams of sugar a day.  I'm lucky if I stay below 100!!! What!!!??

Any suggestions on how I can cut down on my sugar and carb intake. I eat more fruits than veggies and I know fruits are high in sugar.  Do the natural and regular sugars count the same? I'm nervous about this.....

What does everyone think about barley malt?  I eat malt-sweetened chocolate every day (not a ton, but a piece or two), but it doesn't have any refined sugar.  Is that still 'bad'?

I grabbed a bag of malt sweetened choc chips once by mistake and now make sure I have the regular ones.  I thought they tasted gross but I still used them since they were almost $5 a bag.

First of all hooray for sparkpeople!!! I love the site and my friends are probably sick of me talking about it by now.  My problem is similar, I always get enough carbs but my total calorie intake is always low, its supposed to be between 1200-1550 and most days its 900-1000.  I'm really having a hard time finding nutritious foods that won't exceed my carb limit.  So far i've found nuts, peanut butter, sugar free jell-o (not instant w/ light soymilk),tofu, and soy products.  Would love to hear if anyone knows of any other food ideas
