Hidden MSG

My sister-in-law was recently telling me about "hidden msg" in foods. I did some research and was shocked by what I found! Is anyone else trying to avoid msg? It seems that many products listed on food labels are really msg in disguise, mainly through the use of glutamic acid. This stuff can be found in many things and causes the same health problems as msg does. On one hand, I hate to eat something like that, that I know can potentially cause crazy side effects. I stopped consuming aspartame a long time ago for the same reason. But on the other hand, eventually we're not going to be able to eat anything, it seems like so many products are bad for us these days. Below is a small list of ingredients that have glutamic acid or something similar in them.

Yeast extract
Soy Protein (including TSP)
Vegetable Protein (TVP)
Autolyzed yeast or autolyzed yeast extract
Anything with "glutamate"
Anything "hydrolyzed"

Even "natural flavoring" can have these ingredients and the glutamic acid because it is naturally occuring. What are everyone's thoughts on this?? I know quite a few of the products I buy have these ingredients.  :-\

i know what you mean! i'm not sure if i can give up soy sauce. lol. i mean, i could if i really wanted to, but it's tough.  i try to avoid it when possible, but i don't think i have an insane amount so i don't worry about it too much.

truthfully there is no way to completely avoid some form of something icky in your food unless you're making it 100% from scratch. I would say don't worry about it a whole lot. I know my comment isn't very helpful but I really feel sometimes we over-think stuff  8-)

Oh I totally agree with you...And it seems one minute something's bad for you and the next it's good for you! But especially when you eat a "special" diet (as they call it), how the heck do they expect you to eat?! Ah well...everything in moderation right!
