Raw Chit-Chat!

Hi everyone!

I'm planning on going raw for the entire month of August and I thought it would be great if we had a raw chit chat spot! I know a lot of other vegwebbers have expressed interest in either eating raw or going raw--so maybe we can help each other out here! I'm a total noob when if comes to raw, but I'm hoping my 30 day experiment will turn me into a master class raw veganist! I will be blogging everyday during August and posting pics and recipes of what I am eating--should be some great stuff plus all the "Raw Blogs" will be public!

I already have a bunch of questions! Can anyone help?

Raw milk--are there any store brands out there or do I have to make my own? Any super simple recipes for nut milk?
Dried sea weed (like wakame) how long do you soak it for?
I don't have a dehydrator and 150 is the lowest setting on my oven--how can I dry/toast oats, etc. and still have them be raw?
How the heck do I make sun tea?

OK then! That's what I got for now--I hope this can be a great place for raw info!!!

There should be a way to make some raw! I should investigate...

If you find a way to do that, you will be my hero!

I made some raw pesto last night and it was soooo gooood!  I never expected Rawgust to change my diet in such a big way.

You guys really inspire to try Raw, at least for a week. I have a feeling it might be really cleansing or at least a break on my digestive system. Plus, your pictures look so yummy, Storm!

I don't know where to start though.

A week is a good start! Check out www.goneraw.com they have a lot of recipes and ideas and the forum is pretty helpful too! You might want to plan out ahead of time what you are going to eat since it is pretty time consuming preparing! Keep it simple though--your first week will be an adjustment period for your body--also check out combining rules (FYI melons and greens should NOT be eaten together *lol* learned that the hard way...)

Stock up on lots of yummy fruits and veggies and I also like eating dried fruits/nuts/cashew butter/etc. If you have a whole foods to shop at they should have a small raw section with flax crackers and raw fruit leathers to try out!

Good luck! And keep us posted!!!

i just discovered how to "cook" greens.

freeze and defrost! i discovered it by accident because my fridge is a jerk and keeps freezing stuff.

Storm, what's in that kale salad?

Besides the kale: chopped tomato, chopped cucumber, sliced green onions, diced avocado, and raw vinegarette (raspberries, red wine, EVOO, and fresh tarragon).

Sounds good. Did you do anything to the kale (oil it or anything)? Or it's just tossed with vinaigrette?

Just tossed with vinegarette.  :)

actually i made a smoothie....4 peaches, 2 bananas, and a huge apple (i woulda taken a picture but it looked just like vomit) ...that is my breakfast and lunch...tasted pretty good but Im kinda hungry already...Ill have some celery with lunch too....hummm...I dunno about this whole thing. If we don't grocery shop soon Ill have to abort the mission and I'm NOT looking forward to that....

But I have a HUGE test on Wed and I gotta be on my game, yo....

I do entire days of just raw smoothies--but you gotta work your system up to it--otherwise you will be wicked hungry!! Defintely though in so raw cut veggies to your diet :)

omg...i might just give up now. I fricken hate giving up so fast like a whiny baby, but when i was that we need groceries...i mean we don't even have salad.....

I had that fruit smoothie thing for breakfast/ lunch and not i just tried to choke down a yam concoction that is supposed to resemble sweet potato pie. http://www.living-foods.com/recipes/sweetpotatopie.html
only with out the crust....no dates, or psyllium powder (whatever that is) subbed pine nuts for walnuts...um...it didn't taste bad, persay...but just wasnot what i was looking for....

I want something savory...I thought mashed potatoes would be awesome but apparently you cant really do raw potatoes????

hummm...the only raw veggies in the house right 3 yams, tons of potatoes, celery and a single zucchini.....
we have peaches, bananas, tons of apples, lemons.....

umm...there is also amaranth, brown rice.....lentils....walnuts that i THINK are raw....hummm....i gotta go check on the amaranth I set to soak the other day....

I feel like I'm restriting, which was not supposed to be the idea....makes me wanna just say screw it and do the master cleanse with the parents.....but i know that would be "bad"....

idk what 2 do...

Maybe you should offer to do the grocery shopping VHZ.....it's a little rude that they know you are vegan and have let the veggie situation get so bad.

i might try that mirya....i wonder if they just don't wanna grocery shop b/c they are not eating for the next 12 days....but the rest of us are... ::)

I found this recipe...looks delish!

http://vegetableplatter.blogspot.com/2008/08/raw-carrot-lentil-saladcarrot-kosambari.html

I wonder if i could use regular old soaked lentils? and I don't have those seasonings..that could make a big difference...

Lame to double post, BUT...I have great news....they went shopping!!!!!

yaya! Our fridge is filled to bursting with all kinds of produce. Right now I'm eating a salady thing with soaked amaranth, soaked lentils, homemade salsa (zucchini, tomato, onion, garlic, lemon juice.) mushrooms and avocado.

whoop whoop....oh, but i think i might have decided to only do the raw thing 7-10 days though instead of 12...and that doesn't bother me at all...later Zoe and I want to try to do raw londistance-together (plan the same meals for the same time and come up with kick @$$ recipes for it...)

VHZ, do you have a dehydrator?  It opens up so many more possibilities for doing the raw foods thing.  Mine got one hell of a workout during rawgust.

no, i do not have one but my friend Zoe and I are going to do a raw streak together and i want to get one before them.

I have decided to allow myself one non-raw food a day because I just felt too restricted with what i was eating. Not what i was originally going for but better than letting this trigger bad stuff in my head, you know...

but yeah i have found a LOT of cool recipes for the dehydrator...that i wan to try....
