Raw Chit-Chat!

Hi everyone!

I'm planning on going raw for the entire month of August and I thought it would be great if we had a raw chit chat spot! I know a lot of other vegwebbers have expressed interest in either eating raw or going raw--so maybe we can help each other out here! I'm a total noob when if comes to raw, but I'm hoping my 30 day experiment will turn me into a master class raw veganist! I will be blogging everyday during August and posting pics and recipes of what I am eating--should be some great stuff plus all the "Raw Blogs" will be public!

I already have a bunch of questions! Can anyone help?

Raw milk--are there any store brands out there or do I have to make my own? Any super simple recipes for nut milk?
Dried sea weed (like wakame) how long do you soak it for?
I don't have a dehydrator and 150 is the lowest setting on my oven--how can I dry/toast oats, etc. and still have them be raw?
How the heck do I make sun tea?

OK then! That's what I got for now--I hope this can be a great place for raw info!!!

Capture, I think you're rubbing off on me.  I ate raw by accident yesterday....except for the cup of coffee.  I didn't even realize it until this morning.  Perhaps today I'll do it on purpose. :)

Have you eaten at grassroots? I've had a few of their raw dishes. Pretty good!

Capture, I meant should as want... sorry. I know what you mean about being bored with what you eat! I was raw for about 6 months, and totally got used to it and really loved it after about the first month (which really seems like a breaking-in period). I wanted to eat cooked black beans SOOOO bad for the first month! I always wanted to cheat and make burritos/chimichangas... but I ate things that were protein-heavy and fatty to make up for it. I still drink green smoothies and lots salads and as much greens as humanly possible!

You know I kinda figured that's what you meant--but it's hard to tell sometimes so I just went with the literal just to be on the safe side :P

Yeah...I'm really getting used to eating raw--my brain just doesn't see the cooked food anymore (like when I'm shopping, etc.) but I am having mad cravings for stuff--especially beans! And OMG! I so want a burrito! Maybe that will be my first cooked meal--of course I can see that being real messy...if ya know what I mean (sorry! totally TMI!  ;D ) Today I picked up some Go Raw! flax bars and I also found some Flax Masters dehydrated hummus mix that you just add water too! I'm so excited to try them!!! Those kinds of things make life easier one me. I'm really not into the 3 hour food prep thing to try and make a bunch of raw fruit and veggies look like a meal. I would rather just graze on raw/fresh/dried fruits, veggies and nuts. It is soooo much more simpler!

Capture, all I craved when I was raw was pizza and burritos!!! I don't know why... After the first month though I stopped having cravings and cooked/processed food just disappeared.

OMG! That is so funny because on my walk home from the store today, while eating a flax bar, all I could think about was pizza! Oddly enough I have also been craving dairy and meat too--that is waaaaaaaay unusual for me, so I wonder if I'm missing some nutrients...I should eat a high fat dinner tonight--maybe some flax crackers and guacamole!!!! Or maybe I can do some kind of raw-flourless burrito...oh man, now I'm craving mexican again! I better go eat some fruit...

For those of you that have done raw, what was your average calorie intake for the day? Thanks!!  :)

hahaha I ate... and ate... and ate.... and ate.... you get the idea. I was never full! Well, after I got transitioned, I would get full and feel satisfied, but I still ate A LOT OF RAWNESS! So, anyways... I ate more than I ever had and lost around 15lbs in the first month! And I'm already skinny! I was 150 flat and stayed there after I got there. People thought I looked like a twig hahaha.

Well, I am uber-concerned about you and your IMO unsafe calorie restrictins, so I did some online research that didn't turn up anything useful, so I figured I'd turn to my experts, which as always is... vegwebbers.

Vegwebbers are the experts--we can both agree on that at least  :D

capture: for you burrito/taco needs.

you can use walnuts that are seasoned with mexican spices for a "meaty" filling. then use avocado, lettuce, tomato, peppers, etc. this is mega yummy! you can even blend some sunflower seeds with a little salt and lemon to make a "creamy" dressing for it. that is one of my favorite raw foods to put together and it is mega easy.

Oh! That sounds yummy! And I just picked up some mexican seasonings!  Idon't have any raw tortillias--but this will be a great "taco" salad! thanks BP!

you can use chard or other big leafy greens for a wrap

x2! Very good to make wraps this way! I'm not a fan of the walnut taco's though... dunno why. But I made lots of wraps with Chard and Lettuce.

Many times.  I love their raw sushi and raw burrito.  Their kale salad is good too, but mine is better!

no idea... i don't count cals... but i think the point of eating raw is to get to a place that you should need to think about what you are eating. you should be able to eat when you are hungry and feel good about that. you should NEVER restrict what you eat while doing raw (really ever, imo, in terms of not eating when you are truly hungry)

Preface:  In the Freezing Watermelon thread it was advised that watermelon could be blended into juice and frozen in ice cube trays.  So I did that.

Lunch:  There's not much in my fridge, but I do have a bag of mixed lettuce.  I combined a handful of lettuce, six watermelon ice cubes, and a little water in my vitamix and made a KILLER slushie.

The only downside is that I think you need a fat to properly absorb Vit E and I didn't have any in my smoothie, so I ate two kalamata olives.  I loves me the kalamata.

Oh and as for calories, I do count mine cuz I'm trying to lose weight as well.  I'm 5.8 pounds down after 2 weeks.  Today was my heaviest calorie day because I was trying recipes (and my first larabar) and not nibbling on fruits and veggies.  Here's what I had:

green smoothie
lemon larabar
amazing italian "meatballs"
large salad wirh cashew ranch dressing
raw cheeze itz with spinach dip
banilla ice cream
-1503 calories...and only the spinach dip wasn't raw

So 1500 is high for you vig?

Those "meatballs" look good-I think I might try whipping up some of those tonight! Thanks for the links! Keep posting your recipies!!!

Those "meat"-balls do sound good.  I had been planning to finally use my spiral slicer to make zucchini spaghetti tonight, but now I might wait so I can make the meatballs to go with it.

I made the meatballs--they taste really good--mine are a little on the too season-ey side though--but I'm going to eat them for lunch with marinara I think--should be yummy!

Vig--were yours squashy or hard? mine were squashy--I think I could have let them dry more--but they were already fully black...

How would you modify the meatball recipe?  That's one I'd consider taking to my raw food potluck.  How squashy is squashy?

i am excited. since i tried that delightful coconut ice cream i decided that i needed to learn how to make coconut milk (raw, preferably, to make the rest raw ice cream ever) and i found something!

http://www.ehow.com/how_2090999_make-coconut-milk.html

i can't to to try! i just need to buy a blender (still can't decide weather i am going to splurge on the vitamix).
