Raw Chit-Chat!

Hi everyone!

I'm planning on going raw for the entire month of August and I thought it would be great if we had a raw chit chat spot! I know a lot of other vegwebbers have expressed interest in either eating raw or going raw--so maybe we can help each other out here! I'm a total noob when if comes to raw, but I'm hoping my 30 day experiment will turn me into a master class raw veganist! I will be blogging everyday during August and posting pics and recipes of what I am eating--should be some great stuff plus all the "Raw Blogs" will be public!

I already have a bunch of questions! Can anyone help?

Raw milk--are there any store brands out there or do I have to make my own? Any super simple recipes for nut milk?
Dried sea weed (like wakame) how long do you soak it for?
I don't have a dehydrator and 150 is the lowest setting on my oven--how can I dry/toast oats, etc. and still have them be raw?
How the heck do I make sun tea?

OK then! That's what I got for now--I hope this can be a great place for raw info!!!

What does she plan on doing with the rooster??

*sigh* I am counting down the days too...4 more to go.

I was at Red Robin's tonight with my mom and had to eat an iceberg and tomato salad with bland guacamole. I wanted a boca burger with all the toppings and a basket full of fries...but oh no...I had iceberg lettuce...*rolls eyes, sighs some more...*

I can not wait for this to be over with you guys! Seriously it's been great for a lot of reasons-but after 27 days...just give me a freaking piece of bread already!

loulouj, that sounds like a sweet trade!  Especially since you don't like the rooster anyway.  (I do hope he's not headed for a stew pot!)   I agree with you guys, that this has been a really good experience and I will be adding more raw foods to my normal diet.  I failed so miserably the first time I tried this (4 days), but I was ill prepared (no dehydrator, no research).  I'm totally looking forward to my first hot meal on Saturday.

Yeah-yesterdays eating sucked because I was rushed, busy and gone from home all day! When I got home at 11pm last night I scarfed down about 400cals in dried fruit and nuts...not exactly a meal, but I did manage to get my cals to 1000 with that...*blerg* Today will hopefully be better!

Oh you guys are so funny!  Of course I wouldn't let the rooster go for stew :D He is going to a very nice home with 2 other ladies he can be with (hens) and he will be spoiled.  I just don't like him becouse he likes to "fertilize my eggs" if ya know what I mean and that irks me.

Im thinking of ordering Alissa Cohens book, living on raw food, becouse she has some bread recipes in there, like burger buns and the like (www.alissacohen.com) and her raw food looks so awsome.  Im going to be raw for 2 more weeks. (Im behind you guys) and Im sick of eating my burgers on lettuce!  I have mushroom burgers in the dehydrator now.  I have sprouted some wheat and made a sweet bread that you bread off into chunks and eat with a little tahini and it turned out really well. Essene bread is what it is called.

So anyway I will post when I get my new cookbook and if I try the bread recipes.  I won't get my dehydrator until Saturday, anyway.

Holler! I'm on my last two days! I was thinking I should make up some really impressive raw meals for the finale...but I might just be too lazy to do that! I was hoping I would try a lot of new things and have so much to share with all of you-but as it turned out it was just another battle with calories for me. Oh well-I can honestly say I gave it a valient effort and 31 days raw is quite an accomplishment in my book...and if I ever do this again I'm picking a shorter month *lol*

Good luck to the rest of you who are still raw-ing it! I plan on keeping raw apart of my life, so I'll defiently keep checking in on this thread and posting!!!

Yea, I had bread today, and it did well in my POS dehydrator (ronco with no fan)- I made the Basic Brown Bread from the goneraw site and it definately hit the spot! (http://goneraw.com/recipes/2803-Basic-Brown-Bread)  this was what i was needing, a sandwich!  I still havn't gotton  the cookbook I wanted (Alissa Cohens raw living) and I was at Barnes and Noble today and It wasn't there, bummer but I did pick up a copy of The Vegan Lunchbox, since my daughter is going back to school.  And I didn't post a pic becouse I ate it up too fast without even remembering to post a picture, so maybe I will get one tomorrow.

Lou--we have the same dehydrator :) we are Ronco-buddies *lol* it is kind of a ghetto model, but it works--it did pretty well for me, just remember to put down some olive oil on your parchment paper si id doesn't stick! *woot*

It's a good book...huge..must weigh almost 5 pounds but has lots of good info.  If you order it online..don't bother getting the DVD.  Although it's cool watching her make the food the 2 women who are watching her are annoying as hell.

Thanks Mirraya1, I wasn't going to get the DVD anyway, but now I definately won't get it-Have you tried any of the recipes out of it?  Do you eat raw alot or are you eating raw now?

The only recipe I've made out of it is the raw pecan pie which was fantastic.  I don't eat that much raw besides salads and fruits.  I bought it with the intention of going raw but didn't have a dehydrator or even a food processor (at that point) so didn't figure there would be much point in trying to go raw.  I forgot to bring the book with me to TX...I'm waiting for my twin to bring with her on one of her visits since it would be expensive to mail.  I still don't have a dehydrator but there's a lot of good recipes for salads, desserts, dressings, etc that can be made without one.

hey all you raw ladies.  my boyfriend is going on tour for 2 weeks, this is my chance to try out eating all raw.  do you think 2 weeks is enough time to get the benefits of eating raw?  or will i just be in detox the whole time?

also.  how important do you feel organic produce is?  we really dont have much organic food in my town, and i just wont have time to drive down to austin to buy produce very often.  is eating conventional produce alright?  or will i be missing out on a lot of nutrients?

i have a really demanding job and i cant be slacking or sickly, but i would love to give this a shot.  so i just want to make sure i do it right.

Two weeks is a good run--you probably will be in detoz for most of it though--but it all depends on the person! I would say organic is best but use what you got! This can be your trial run so don't stress too much about having everything exactly perfect!

Chekc out www.goneraw.com for good raw recipes and starter tips and stuff--it's a pretty good community, but not very organized.

As long as you combine right you shuldn't be slacking or sickly, but i did get really, really tired about 2-3 weeks in, but I'm also a freak who east below 1200cals a day...so I'm not the best person to be looking at...

Hope that helps a smidge :)

On this last day of Rawgust, I'd like to congratulate our raw food experimentalists on their accomplishment and welcome them back to cooked food.

For those of you who went through it, what were the highs and lows?  What insight do you have for getting around the lows?

Four hours and counting...

I think the high for me was detoxing really good! I feel extra pure and as much as I want to eat cooked again, I also don't want to lose the purity i have achieved.

The lows for me were the monotony of the food (despite the people at goneraw going on and on about the fracking variety). I got really bored eating fruti, fruit and more fruit. Another low was learning about the laws of combining after barfing a huge salad and watermelon...*gross*. And lastly, being too tired and getting too weak to work out as hard as I like too (but those are primarily my fault for not eating more cals).

I'm so happy I did Rawgust and made it all the way through! And with only one small slip up that was so not my fault! Woot!

Well, it's finally over.  I only did 3 weeks since I started late in August, but I must say that I enjoyed the experience overall and will continue to make raw foods.  Saturday was supposed to be my swan song to raw foods, but my folks called Friday evening and asked if we could postpone the family gathering/dinner until Sunday.  This actually allowed me a day to ease back into real food before the big dinner.

Saturday morning......I had BREAD!!!  It was like a little slice of whole grain heaven, warm, buttery (Earth Balance), crusty bread with my coffee.  Honestly, it could have been waxy white wonder bread and it still would have tasted like the best bread I'd ever eaten.  I had salad for lunch, but this time with croutons and olives and pickled beets.  I had so missed the nice crunch of croutons on my salads.  I had more bread later.

I thought on Sunday I'd try not to eat too much since it was Indian food and I was relatively successful in not just gorging myself.  I must admit though, what I did eat sat in my stomach like a rock and made me feel kind of crappy for a couple of hours.  My stomach kind of went a bit wonky with rice and dahl in it, but it tasted sooooo good.

Today I think I shall stick mostly with salad and steamed vegetables.

I did commit a few "crimes" during Rawgust, such as coffee and tea and a couple of times, when cooking for my daughter and she wasn't there at the time to be the taster, I did taste a dish to check for appropriate seasoning.  Overall I feel like it was a success, certainly more so than the first time I tried this.

:) :) :) :)

So I ate my cookies at 12:01am and they were the best things I have ever put in my mouth (well actually...), anyways...it was weird though--I felt like I was doing something very, very wrong. This morning I ate two tiny slices of manna bread, again it felt wrong to eat them.

This afternoon I had some major cramping--I think it was the cooked food traveling through my intestines--it was not fun :( I'm hoping the rice I plan on later today will treat me better. I'm going to make 1/2 cup basmati rice and mix it with a raw heirloom tomatoe that i'm going to chunkify in the food processor, add a few spices and volia! a half cooked-half raw dinner :)
