Raw Chit-Chat!

Hi everyone!

I'm planning on going raw for the entire month of August and I thought it would be great if we had a raw chit chat spot! I know a lot of other vegwebbers have expressed interest in either eating raw or going raw--so maybe we can help each other out here! I'm a total noob when if comes to raw, but I'm hoping my 30 day experiment will turn me into a master class raw veganist! I will be blogging everyday during August and posting pics and recipes of what I am eating--should be some great stuff plus all the "Raw Blogs" will be public!

I already have a bunch of questions! Can anyone help?

Raw milk--are there any store brands out there or do I have to make my own? Any super simple recipes for nut milk?
Dried sea weed (like wakame) how long do you soak it for?
I don't have a dehydrator and 150 is the lowest setting on my oven--how can I dry/toast oats, etc. and still have them be raw?
How the heck do I make sun tea?

OK then! That's what I got for now--I hope this can be a great place for raw info!!!

I transitioned into raw August 1st, (with Capture as my inspiration) and I ate raw for breakfast for a week than raw for breakfast and lunch for a week and then totally raw as of August 14th and I thought I would try it for a month-I would say the highs have been increased energy and concentration as well as feeling very good most of the time-the lows were the extreme irritability I seemed to go through that first week of being raw, now this may have been due to my monthly, but the symptoms seemed to be magnified.  Also it is very hard to eat out and hard to cook for the rest of my family.  As of now I feel amazing as aside from the tea I have in the morning and the occas. glass of red wine that has been the extent of my cheating.  I do have a cookbook that I have found invaluable-eat smart eat raw by Kate Wood.  The recipes are uncomplicated and the ingredients easy to find-recipes are not complicated.  Also Captures blog and the goneraw site have helped alot.

So two more weeks to go...

Also worth mentioning,  Ive had a white spot in the back of my throat about the size of a bee bee, the dentist said he had never seen anything like it and wanted me to get it checked out-He freaked out when I told him I had had it for two years.  It has vanished since going raw.

That's really weird--because when I first went raw I got this big swollen pustual thing under my tounge..it was there for about 2 or 3 days then went away. I thought aybe it was a tastebud that got inflammed or something...I don't know...but it was WEIRD!

Rah-rah Loulou! 2 moe weeks--you go girl!!!  :)>>>

I'm sorry Capture.  I didn't get cramps, but after sampling the Indian food Sunday my stomach kept rolling and gurgling for over an hour.  It was not a happy stomach.  Yesterday I went back to salad and bread.  The bread doesn't seem to bother me, thank Goddess.  I watched my daughter eat pizza yesterday and it smelled so good, but I knew that would be a huge disaster so I didn't.

I was so looking forward to cooked food yet what I brought to the office with me today is a banana, a plum, and some kale salad, even though I said I might never eat kale salad again.

Hey Capture.....how are you doing with the transition back to cooked foods?  I'm still eating mostly vegetables, though I'm steaming and stir frying a lot of them now.

My body physically is OK now with eating cooked foods--although the most cooked I've eaten is rice, beans, manna bread and some homemade cookies and tortillias from PineapplePrincess (thanks girlfriend :) ) I'm still pretty much high raw-like yesterday I ate raw the entire day except for my dinner which included 1/2 cup of rice. It's just too weird to eat cooked foods so I'm staying in my comfort zone of "safe foods".

How is it going for you Storm??

Kind of the same.  Yesterday I had a banana, peach, plum, salad, bread, and stir fried vegetables.  After the Indian food faux pas on Sunday I'm still a bit nervous about eating beans and rice.  I'm thinking I might make some hummus today and just eat a little bit.  Previously I was eating some kind of pasta or rice almost everyday and I don't think I want to go back to that now.

Hey loulouj!  How is it going for you?

It's going really well!  I have mastered bread making in my pos dehydrator by just dehydrating for twice as long as the recipes state and flipping halfway through, peeling off the parchment paper so it doesn't stick.  Tuesday, I spent all morning "cooking" just for myself.  Raw hummus, Better than onion Bread, Brazil nut burgers and a red hot pepper dip for roll ups, so I have lots of food for the weekend into next week.  Im really craving some veggie sushi today!  Also have been gorging on fresh tomatoes and corn on the cob, raw tomatoe soup, and a raw ratatoulle recipe.  Variety is definately the key with this raw thing, I have been enjoying it very much, but really need to start transitioning out of it soon as I have a weekend getaway next friday with hubby!
If I lived somewhere I could get fresh organic produce year around, I would probably eat raw all the time, but here in Michigan that just doesn't seem to feasible.  AND I do miss all the wonderful vegan food my family has been eating, that I have been cooking!! All in all it has been a good experience.  Thanks Storm for asking.

Your food sounds awesome!  I never got past mastering the cracker on my dehydrator!

How is everyone doing? Any new recipes? Transition stories?

I'm doing good transition into high raw (75/25).  I'm probably eating 50/50 right now as I am trying to use up the cooked foods I bought to transition out of total raw (that was counter productive!) Who knew all I really needed was rice to make me happy!  ;D

Anyways--I made up another batch of carrot-pecan burgers *yum* Those taste great crumbled onto a salad!! In this batch i put in cayenne pepper--thought I would make them "buffalo" style!

Anyone have any new recipes they really like?? Please post!!

I'm probably doing about 50/50 raw to cooked too, the cooked is primarily bread, bottled salad dressing (because I'm lazy), and steamed veggies.  I still haven't tried your carrot-pecan burger recipe, but I'm going to once my dehydrator trays are no longer taken up my end-of-season hot pepper crop.  I should probably post my flax cracker recipe since I finally got it just right.  I did post my swamp soup recipe and I noticed you posted your watermelon coolie.  I'm glad to see more raw recipes being posted here, there are so few.

Hey loulouj!  Post some of those recipes you mentioned before....pleeeeeeeaze! :)

My blender and dehydrator have gotten quite a workout over the past two days.  I made some awesome spicy sundried tomato pesto.  My daughter wanted to play with the new frosting tips so she put the pesto in a pastry bag and piped it onto slices of plum tomato, zucchini, and yellow squash.  It was so pretty I made her take a picture.  I'll post it once I get her to download the camera.
Yesterday I was going to make Capture's pecan carrot burgers but discovered that my shrooms had gone bad and I was out of pecans so I just started playing with the stuff I had.  I shredded some carrots, zucchini, and yellow squash and soaked some walnuts.  I made paste out of the walnuts, plus some spinach, parsley, oregano, onion, garlic and a Tabasco pepper and mixed the paste into the shredded veggies.  The patties held together really well and they smelled really good while they were drying.  I just pulled them off this morning and I can't wait to try them for dinner.
Since the burgers weren't going to be ready for last night's dinner, I pulled out the spiral slicer and made some zucchini spaghetti.  I also took the rest of the leftover pesto and added it to some fresh blended plum tomatoes to make the sauce.  My daughter isn't a big fan of the raw spaghetti, but I love it.
Anyway, today I'm going to make another batch of flax crackers and who knows what else.  :)

Ok Storm, I promise I will post some recipes and pics this weekend!  The better than  onion bread is on the goneraw site, just click on the bread section, it is super easy and good.  My Dehydrator is full of tomatoes today!  I love to have dried tomatoes for winter dishes. Im about 75/25 and happily transitioning out!

I refuse to let the raw chit-chat fall off the first page!

Soooo...my 75/25 is going pretty well. On average I have a raw smoothie for breakfast, a big salad for lunch and something cooked for dinner--it's working out really well, although this weekend I totally binged on cooked foods! Saturday I had a hummus wrap and indian food, sunday I was at a Farm Sanctuary fundraiser and had two vegi dogs! That night my parents came up for a b-day dinner and I had a tempha wrap w/ fries and a piece of vegan cheese cake (which was sooo kick ass by the way!) I ate soooo much over the weekend that I gained just over two pounds! Totally crazy...but I put myself back on the 75/25 Monday and everything is all good!

How is everyone else?

It sounds like you're doing great Capture!  I was up until Monday when I had to travel to Connecticut for business.  The only raw food I've had for the past three days is salad and I feel like crap and it totally messed up my digestive system.  I was supposed to be there through Friday, but I got to come home early because there wasn't enough for me to do (Yay!).  The first thing I did was get in my car and head to the produce stand!!  It's raw veggies tonight, baby!!

*woot* Go you Storm :) Duuude my weekend was crazy full of cooked shenanigans...but it's OK, we all have our moments! I think the worst for me is baked goods--I just can not get enough cookies, cakes, chhocolate anything, etc. I wish I could just live off of vegan chocolate chip cookies! There should be a way to make some raw! I should investigate...
