Too much fruit?

Is it possible to eat too much fruit? Most 'food pyramid' type guidelines tend to show 2-4 servings as the recommendation. I probably eat at least double that! I eat about an equal amount of non-starchy veggies, and up to three 'proteiney' things - I just tend not to eat very much in the way of starches/grains. I'd expect the problem, if any, to be blood sugar spikes, but I actually find my energy/blood sugar is more stable with fruit than with the refined carbs that tend to be available to us broke student-types. And I would lean more heavily on veggies, but it's a hell of a lot easier to pinch bananas from the cafeteria than it is to walk out with the salad bar! Am I doing myself any harm by replacing my bread with bananas and my oatmeal with apples?

Wow, that's really awesome. I think it would be great to be able to just eat fruits and veggies. I definatly can sympathize with the poor college student thing, because I am one! Some days I don't have an option to eat as healthy as I would like. But that's just life, and we make do with what we have.

I make less than $800/mo. right now, ftr.

i meant kale, not kelp... hahahaha

but i am back on high-raw again and have found that i can increase my fruit intake, because i am no longer eating refined sugars.  i think that was actually causing the blood sugar spikes.

so i (think) i am detoxing--- these past two days of high-raw, i have been feeling great; except for a bad migraine that comes and goes...which, may not even be a migraine at all.

I don't see how there could be too much. If you are lacking vitamins that aren't found in fruit, then yes. I recently was told by my doctor though to cut back on sweets after I had a procedure done, and I was shocked when she said no fruit for 10 days, because of the natural sugars.

every essential vitamin is found in fruit. i know a 17 year frutarian that doesn't supplement.

I don't think you could say EVERY vitamins is found in fruit, what about vit D and B12?   If they ARE in fruits let me know which ones  ???

according to this:

and other things i have read you can get enough vitamin d just from being exposed to sunlight :)

Hesp - do you count that as all fruits, just sweet fruits, or up to and including nuts, seeds, and/or grains?

Gah, I said every essential vitamin/mineral.
Yeah, you need to get your D from the sun.... b12 I was unconvinced about, but it seems that there have been a lot of studies supporting that it is also made by bacteria in the mouth and such (I knew it was made by bacteria in the colon, but that is past the point of absorption for b12.. which is in the illieum). Anyway, apparently all b12 issues are issues with absorption, not actually getting the nutrient. b12 goes through a lot of different co-factors and such to be absorbed, so it's easy to mess with that system. I'm planning on doing my own research into this, but since I have herd of multiple people doing long-term diets of either fruitarian or like mine (without supplementation, they are very against it), I would feel safe asserting that you can get your b12, as long as you aren't irritating your system to the point that it can't absorb what you make.

narcissus -- I am unsure about whether the people I "know" (online) are sweet-fruit only people.. I think one eats avocado. I can ask them if you'd like. I do know that b12 isn't "in" any of those "fruits", either, so I don't know if that is what you were curious about.

ETA: definitely no seeds and grains, as those are not fruits.

I think if you eat a wide variety of fruit, you'd be covered for the most part, but for B12 and D (which does come from sunlight)...the key being variety.

This is not to say that I think a fruitarian diet is superior.  I don't.  I think there are a tremendous amount of antioxidants and phytonutrients in fruit and I eat a lot of it, especially berries.  I personally need some fat and a better source of protein for me to feel good.  I feel the best on a vegan diet that includes a lot of fresh raw fruit and vegetables.

To each is own.  I think for most of us it's ok to eat more than the recommended servings of fruit.

Well, iIm not a frutarian or ever plan on being one, to be clear, but I'm still going to say don't knock it 'til you've tried it.

Sometimes I think about what I am "surviving" (I'd say thriving, but ya know...) on and it's is something that I never would have fathomed until... Well, recently. Even before when I was dabbling in raw foods and ate "high fruit", I didn't really realize how much fruit constituted "high". Now that I know how to properly get enough calories, I feel great!

ditto...id have to say the bulk of my diet now is fruit.  maybe thats a seasonal thing; its winter; the bright, colorful, sweet, inviting appeal of fruit is really appealing to me, and living in the raw, ive noticed a more symbiotic relationship with eating fruit.  unlike with a high-SAD diet, where eating fruit seemed to clash with my body, and my sugar levels.

I know that most people get their Vit D from the sun but I'm allergic to sunlight, so I tend not to go outside often, which sucks. I also can't drink milk because of an allergy to lactose. And B12 is irritating. I don't know how to get it other then to eat meat or nutritional yeast. And to me NY tastes like dirt. I find it so funny you linked that site because I was actually looking at that two days ago! Almost scarey ;)

I don't completely agree that fruitarianism is the best way to live your life. That would be a lot of fruit, and it wouldn't work for everyone. Not to mention your food bill would be like 800 dollars a month or whatever. Personally I'm eating about 80% fruit right now and I feel great, I eat like 4-12 bananas a day (yes i do eat other fruits), and I never would have thought bananas taste so good lol! I say just eat what your body tells you to eat. I know that doesn't help much though

I could eat fruit all day everyday because that's what I WANT to do... I LOVE fruit...but I can't say it totally loves me.  I mean, it's good in "normal" amounts, for me, but when I eat A LOT of it, I feel awful... mostly in regards to digestive issues.

I was on a high raw diet... I mean like 98% (the only thing I didn't eat raw was my morning coffee, and then my birth control pills) and I had to stop doing it because after doing it for 4 months, I started feeling severely bloated and uncomfortable just about anytime I'd eat even a little bit.  Anyway most of my diet was fruits.  I noticed that when I ate less fruits and more veggies and things like that, I felt a bit better, but veggies never seemed to keep me satisfied and full the way fruits would, so I don't know.

I think everyone is different.  I mean, everyone IS different.  just as some people are gluten intolerant, and some aren't, some people can do high fruit diets, and some can't.

If you can, more power to you, I don't think there's anything wrong with it, if it works for you! I wish it did for me..

Let me just warn though! That eating raw like that can get super expensive since you eat so much produce all the time... I was going to the store every day, sometimes a couple times a day to stock up on things... ALWAYS bananas, haha.  Now that I'm back to a more mixed vegan diet, it saves me a LOT of $$

Its not a fruit per se, but mushrooms are a good source of vitamin D, are low in calories, and can be eaten raw.  Vitamin B12 does not have to be consumed daily.  Most packaged vegan products are fortified in it, so even if you only eat those products occasionally you will probably get enough.  Hespedal is right, as usual, in that B12 deficiency is an absorbtion problem.  I type medical records for a living.  B12 deficiency is very common in people who eat more than plenty of animal products.

I plan to try to eat mostly fruits and veggies for breakfast and dinner and then eat "regular" vegan foods for lunch at least for the summer.  I try to eat my heavy meal at lunchtime.  I would try to do it more than that for weightloss purposes, but I worry my daughter won't get enough calories, and she wants to eat what I eat.  I joined a CSA which will help with the cost.  Has anyone tried The Fruit Guys?

Yes, it is definitely possible to have too much fruit. For me, even one whole small peach is too much. Both fructose and sorbitol cause problems for me, like bladder pain and menstrual-type cramping. Too much fructose can also cause hormonal problems.

Here's some more info:

http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/444869/too_much_sugar_affects_sex_hormones.html?cat=22

Quote:
Researchers have discovered that eating too much of both fructose and glucose turns off the gene that controls the levels of testosterone and estrogen working inside the body.

...if the SHBG gene is shut down and is not releasing any SHBG protein, then greater amounts of estrogen and testosterone are released throughout the body.

It's estimated that as much as 43% of Caucasians and 55% of non-Caucasians are sorbitol intolerant.

Sorbitol is found in high amounts in certain fruits and juices such as peaches, pears, plums, and apple juice

.
Quote:
Most people with "fructose intolerance" can eat some fructose, just not in large quantities at once. Fructose is found in most fruits and many other whole foods. It's concentrated in fruit juices and dried fruits, which may be more problematic than fresh fruits. Fructose is especially a problem when it's mixed with sorbitol, as can happen in dietetic jams.

It can definitely be problematic for children too:

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2008/01/02/fruit-juice-and-restlessness-in-infants.aspx

Quote:
Fruit juices that contain sorbitol or high levels of fructose as sweeteners may cause restlessness, gas and stomach distress in infants. The sweeteners may cause problems in babies because young children often have difficulty breaking down carbohydrates, including these sugars.

article #1...
they never mentioned fruit.. not once... all they said was REFINED sugar. sure, it's still glucose and fructose, but we all know it works in the body differently.

#2...
The page you linked to says to eat more fruit. it's also about IBS, which i've known people to heal on a fruit and greens diet.

#3..
Seriously? You have to sign up for this guys newsletter? OK, well whatever... Fruit JUICE? totally out of context and different than whole fruit.

remember, everything can be taking out of context, everything can be "proved".
