New to Veganism

Hi!

My husband and I are just getting started towards changing our lifestyle and becoming vegans.  I am a little apprehensive as this is a huge change for us especially with the holidays approaching.  Does anyone have good advice for those first few weeks when we are trying to break bad habits and not give into food cravings?

- Going Vegan is Hard :(

Hi, it's not hard; it just seems that way. ;)  First of all, this may not be the easiest time of  year to make the change, so try not to give up or expect perfection.  There are about a million vegan blogs to offer support, information and recipes. So surf away.

The other really important thing is to find other veg people near you. There are Veg Societies in almost any city, so connect and you'll find out where to shop and eat out and all that other stuff. There are so many amazing food subs out there now, but I find that a lot of people don't even know about them. Tofutti cream cheese and sour cream. Tofurkey meats in many varieties. And for those crazy cheese cravings, get yourself some Daiya or some Teese (for nachos especially).    Don't give up! You are saving the animals, the environment and your own life by going vegan! YAY.

WE are also making the switch, well I am...and trying to convince spouse. LOL

Good luck to you! Lets keep sharing ideas! I love this website.  I was a vegetarian my whole life.  Now going dairy free, egg free and looking for soy alternatives. I limit intake of soy and have a young daughter.

Hang in there!

I too am now coming out of the closet after trying my hand at becoming vegan for the last two months, I can notice that I feel some calm, and noting some health benefit, more restful, digestion issues are passe. I also have influenced my husband to try his hand at it and well as my daughters. I think I can continue and pass the three month mark without any problem.

Hi I'm new to being Vegetarian and try really hard not to have any other dairy Products. I'm not getting a lot of Support in the hubby department. If anyone has any. Ideas that well help me to open his eyes to the wonderful word of being a vegetarian I'm all ears. He seems to dislike everything I have made Which makes it hard for me to get my two young children to eat the way I want them to .

I am switching back to a vegan diet myself.  I fell off the bandwagod quite a few times.  At the moment you can consider me a "ovo-vegetarian" but that simply is just because I still have a carton of eggs in my fridge that I don't want to just throw away.  So once those are used up, I will be full fledged vegan (again).

If you fall off the bandwagon, that is okay, just pick yourself back up and get back on again.  I see going vegan very simalar to giving up an addiction, just like quitting smoking.  Meat, and especially dairy, are addictive, but if you keep eating it, it will kill you, but it is hard to give up an addiction, you just have to take it one day at a time.  Luckily, it is much easier then it used to be now that Diaya is in most large grocery stores, and faux meats are getting better too.  Boca vegan burgers arn't too bad, and I was pleased to see that Boca now has a vegan chicken patty!!!!!  I was VERY happy to see that.  Poultry was the hardest thing for me to give up as I love chicken.  But with Morningstar vegan chick'n strips, Boca vegan chicken patties, and others, it is much easier.  And Daiys is great!  Tofutti cream cheese and sour cream is awesome too!  And cashews and nutritional yeast will probably become your new staple if you love cream sauces as much as I did.

Good luck!

Hi there :)

Both me and my husband have successfully switched to vegetarian/vegan diet. I dedicated my blog to the subject, if you would like to hear my story, please feel free to visit my blog at

http://myjourneytoawakening.wordpress.com/

You'll also find a link there to my other website with some food recipes and nutritional facts.

The transition is not easy, but so well worth it. I wouldn't recommend switching 'over-night', but gradually, however whatever works best for you.

As for those not-so-keen 'other halves', I'd make them watch some or all (!) documentaries from the list there:

especially 'Earthlings'.

Good luck x
