Hear the latest news about meat companies being required to label their packages

A law just passed saying that the meat industry must give a "freshness date" and label where the meat comes from.  Of course the lobbiest are figting this.  Also, there is a push to get the meat industry to also label if the meat is chemically treated.

I heard this on the news this morning.  First thing I thought: good, give the meat industry something pain in the ass to do, take labor and cost money to do it, make price of meat go up, make people not buy so much of it.

Then a second thougt occured to me: if people are so worried about the freshness of it, why buy it?  Seems simple to me, just buy tofu instead, cheaper, tastes better, healthier. Just want to say...Duh!

Did you know that they process meat with carbon monoxide so that it stays looking fresher longer?  The people on the news had two packages of ground burgers, one treated with carbon monoxide, the other with no treatment, they left both packages out for 48 hours...I think it was...anyway, the meat with no treatment turned all green and yuk, the meat with treatment was still pink and bloody.  All that I have to say is...ewww.  Why do people insist on putting that crap in their bodies??? Yuk!!!  I can't believe I used to eat that crap!!!

The more labeling done the better! People need to know what they are putting into their bodies!

I heard some stores are requiring "cruelty" labeling--maybe that will turn off a few customers too!

*blarf* Carbon monoxide?? That just reafirmed my vegetarian status! Thanks for posting tht!!!!

That is pretty gross.  The problem is that most ppl don't know they're eating so many chemicals...or they may know it, but in some obsure, it-doesn't-effect-my-life way.

I hope the lobbyists lose. Does this just apply to fresh meat, or does it apply to frozen meat too? I could see some people just buying the frozen stuff so that they don't need to be reminded of how old and nasty their food is...

Or they can just do what they did in Japan: just relabel everything.
Was going on for years - meat  past its freshness date being dipped in antibiotic (or something odd like that. Since I don't really eat meant,  Didn't bother to pay attention.), old meat being repackaged, pork by products in "beef" patties, American or Australian meat mixed in with Japanese beef but sold as100 percent Japanese.  (FYI: American beef is usually not allowed in because of poor testing and BSE problems)

Plenty of ways to get around labelling.  :P

Labeling laws don't mean anything in this country. They put laws on the books and then fail to enforce them. It's standard political "lip service". I posted an article about country of origin labeling a couple weeks ago that was a good illustration of this:

Carbon monoxide causes blood to lose its ability to release the oxygen it carries. When a human being gets carbon monoxide poisoning their blood gets bright red, very rich in oxygen. But they die from lack of oxygen because the tissues that need it can't get it out of the blood. First thing you do when you suspect than someone has carbon monoxide poisoning is check the inside of their lower lip to see if it's bright red. I would expect that dead animal flesh reacts the same way.

Carbon monoxide? LOL. I'm not surprised anymore of what the meat industry does.

I wonder why omni's aren't questioning why the meat industry is so against it.

I'd have to figure that since they are already willing to eat something as unhealthy as meat they don't care much about other little things like how old it is or what it has been treated with. It's kind of like a Skid Row bum refusing to drink generic Sterno. Nothing but the name brand for the discerning consumer.

By the way, do you know where old drunks go in Beverly Hills? Skid Drive.

Really?  I don't think that's true.  Think of various ads for meaty things in which "freshness" is emphasized.  Like the Subway "eat fresh" slogan, or the Hillshire Farms (I think) commercial with the "discerning" shopper stalking the grocery store employee putting out fresh items.

You're probably right, though, about the treatments.

I think that there are certainly quite a few omnis who are very interested in the quality of their food. I also think there is likely to be a higher percentage of omnis willing to simply not think about it than there would be among vegans/vegetarians who are probably generally more health conscious.

Yeah, I know a lot of people who really dont care about the chemicals that are put into meat, which is insane to me, I could tell them exactly what they do to the meat, and they would look at me blankly and say yum when eating it...I mean you're putting gross chemically enhanced dead animal in your system.  Ahh so crazy.
