The problem with faux fur

I wish I'd not read this over breakfast.  This is disturbing.

http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/02/07/dog.fur/index.html

I had just read this the other day. It's so sad. They should move to ban ALL fur. Not just fur from dogs. I sometimes look at the "Faux Fur" trim that is on so many products today and i always said to myself that it does look real. The sad part is that the dogs that were killed for their fur are given sympathy (which they should have). But a mink or rabbit, fox, etc... are not given any sympathy. Funny how one can pet his dog, give them a kiss on their wet nose, and leave the house with a fur coat on....... >:(

I didn't read the article at cnn, but I know what it is talking about just from the "dog.fur".
They had this on PETA, along with some graphic pictures.  :'(  :'(
It really just turns my stomach just to remember it.

also, speaking of problems with faux fur...
I feel any fur - faux or not -  creates a problem, just because people don't know at a glance it is fake.  They naturally assume it's real and then they start to feel that wearing any fur is OK.  And then trends start.

I won't wear faux fur because I think it send the wrong message to too many unknowning people.

I mean, really, what would make someone look at a stingray and think, 'man that would be one heck of a coffee table'?)

The same person that thinks it's attractive to have a dead moose or deer head on his wall staring out at him everyday! >:(

Holy crap, dog fur?! Ugh, what the hell is wrong with people?

I have a neighbor that invited me over for a party he was having a few months ago....his house looks like Teddy Roosevelt's in the inside. You can not look ANYWHERE without seeing a dead stuffed animal. He even a baby deer (fawn) enclosed in his coffee table!

Let's just say I left early, and don't bother waving at him when I drive, or jog by any longer! In my eyes, he and his wife are monsters to live like that!!

Over here in Spain and many other European countries, it's sadly cat fur. Cats are seen as completely expendable by most people. Granted, no cat is completely domesticated, but if you ask the person on the street in S. Spain if they like cats you will get, "Oh, no, they're traitorous, untrustworthy etc." As if an animal could have a moral posture of that type! Most people will admit to being rather afraid of them. Most civil authorities in our cities see them as "vermin." When you see "rabbit fur" for sale it is often cat fur...and no one cares. I tried to speak to a public officer about this and was laughed out of his office.

I have a faux fur coat. I happen to think it really does look faux -- more like a blanket with a leopard print on it than fur, but just to make sure, I bought a "FUR IS DEAD" button & wear it proudly on the collar. BTW, I got this idea from a long time VegWeb member who bought a pleather coat & then sewed on some Peta appliques that said "pleather." Done right, you can educate people that there are compassionate alternatives to wearing real fur & leather.

BTW, I never hear people say that wearing faux leather shoes sends the wrong message. Why is that? Is it cuz shoes are a necessity & a fur/leather coat is not & becasue of that we overlook the shoes? Just wondering.  ???

As for animal trophies, Ellen DeGeneres said, “You ask people why they have deer heads on their wall. They always say, ‘Because it’s such a beautiful animal.’ There you go. I think my mother’s attractive, but I have photographs of her.”   ;)

this is so wierd... i've just been have a running conversation in my head about this subject all week. i live in a posh area of chicago where there are lots of women running around in giant fur coats... not just teenagers with a little "faux"fur trim on their jackets but massive pelts of hundreds of what i'm sure are endangered animals. i never know what to do about this. i toyed with the idea of coughing "murderer" under my breath when i pass them, since that's essentially what they are, but decided that would be childish and really only make myself feel better. if you saw someone beating a dog or other animal on the street, you would know exactly what to do... you would take action, physically or legally stop them.... but once the action is done and the person is wearing the result of that beating, what do you do?

for some reason i can overlook leather shoes, and bags. i guess i see shoes as at least being a useful item, and cows are already in the food chain... that is, technically, the whole cow is getting used. i even have leather shoes left over from pre-vegan days that i've been wearing all winter.

as for stuffed animal heads... that's just so tacky i can't even begin to comment. at least a fur coat keeps someone warm.

It's like they've hired a hit man and therefore aren't guilty of actually doing anything.

I do too.  I've decided that everything I have of this sort, I will keep, cherish, and use as long as I can, in honor of the animal whose life was taken for it.  I guess giving these things away to a good cause would be good too (like the PETA fur coat thing), so I may do that as well.  I cleared out my non-vegan pantry items recently, and those are going to my church this weekend.  I just can't let myself feel like I somehow wasted these things.

Apstaats, this is a good attitude; wasting things just adds insult to injury...or in this case, death...

*shudders* I'm very glad I read this post... I need a new winter coat and now I know I have to watch out.

Hey Lezly, where did you get that button? and does PETA still sell those patches? I like that idea.

As for the whole pre-vegan days, I still have a leather messenger bag and leather wallet. I'm not going to throw them out, because that would waste. And I've decided against giving them away, because each time I use the bag or wallet, I'm reminded of an animal that died for fashion. Guess you can say that thought keeps me checking labels.

Well I have a question for any of  you that might know....
I still have a few sets of leather couches from my pre-vegan days. I kind of hate sitting on dead cow skin everyday. I'd love to donate them next time I move, and that is my plan. Does ANYONE know of a store, or a company that has high end pleather couches? I really can't have fabric covered couches in my home.....they would actually end up becoming "dog fur" couches...if you know what I mean ::)

(((Lezly)))

I'm eagerly awaiting my next paycheck - hopefully I'll have enough for bills, food, a vegweb subscription, a donation to compassion over killing for all those vegetarian starter guides I ordered for the last Fired Up Friday, AND some of those adorable pins & bumper stickers. I don't know about you, but I tend to stick those things on notebooks instead of my (non-existant, I carpool) car.

I was checking this thread and what do I see at the bottom of the page but four ads, one for faux fur (cornelia james) and the other for fur and leather garments (fur-leather.com) And lower down, designer mink (madisonavenuemall) and Kauffman Furs!
Is there no way to screen who advertises on here? They were "advertisements by Google". Maybe they just appear and admin is not to blame, but it brought me up right short!!
