Meet Ernie and Bert......they need a home....

Hi All.....
I  just got back from a family "thing" up in NY....but on Friday afternoon.....as I was returning home from running some errands before I had to leave town (I left on Sat. Morning)....I was driving down the road leading home....was about a mile from my subdivision...and 2 puppies came running out in the middle of the road right in front of me. I closed my eyes and slammed on my breaks then pulled over in front of the old Auraria, GA general store/hotel (back from the old Gold Mining days....when this area was the site of the first Gold Rush in the US).......the puppies ran towards the old store and an old shack located next to it. There was an old woman living in a shack on the other side of the store/hotel.....I asked her about the puppies...she told me that her dog gave birth to them...and that there were 5...but now there are only 2 left.....(my guess is that they were run over....she told me the other ones just disappeared one by one).....

I asked her if I could have the dogs and she said yes.....that is if I could catch them.....well after an hour and a half of tempting them with some food (I always have dog and cat food in my car...along with bowls....bottles of water...leashes...really just an "animal rescue kit" I travel around here with)....I caught them!!!! While I was waiting to get them I called all the rescue groups/people I knew and said I was going out of town and in no way would I be able to have my house/pet sitter care for them....and I then basically BEGGED them to please take the puppies in. One nice woman from a Rescue group in Atlanta agreed....

Well....Now Ernie and Bert need a home. Here's a few pics I took from my cell phone. They kept hiding under the old shack, the hotel/store, and the old ladies house....On a good note....the old woman.. (whom BTW told me she is 90)....told me that I can take her dog in (the Mom) and get her fixed...(as my treat of course). She told me should could not afford to have it done...and that her dog "Foxie" had already had 5 litters over the past 5 years.....so..I'll at least be able to put an end to that!

Take a look at where these pups were living....this is what it looks like about a mile from where I live....there really is almost no middle class here....just us (whatever "we" are)....and the extreme poverty of the Appalachains.....it's so sad to see on a daily basis.... (I never got "used" to it.....)

The pic of the puppies under the house peeking out....that's her house.  :-\

SO.....if you know anyone looking for an Ernie.....a Bert....or BOTH....let me know!

Thanks!
-dave

Dave, you are a hero.  The world needs more people like you.  I'm sure those puppies and their mama are thanking their lucky stars you found them!

Amen! Wow, that is so incredible of you to do that, Dave! I really wish I could help out, but I'll definitely pass the word along! I wish more people would think of adopting dogs instead of buying from breeders... (But that's a whole different discussion. ;)) There are just so many dogs (like this!) that have already been born & need a loving home. :'(

This is my thinking too, friend...does she seem to be safe? Is there running water, does she have heat for the up coming winter? We had a resident come to hour home at about 90 who had been living by herself in a  rundown trailer until a kind stranger found her and called adult protective services. You may consider going back sometime (at least you will be to pick/drop off her dog to be spayed...) just to check on her.

Dave--you are AMAZING! Those puppies are sooooo cute, I'm sure they will find a good home in no time, I'll even donate some of my karma points  I've been saving up for them  :) Thank you for being so awesome!

Gosh, I wish I could have a dog now. I'd take them both in 2 seconds! Alas, I can't even think about owning a dog until I move, get settled in, and that won't be until after January. Plus, I'm not near you.

I hope you find homes for them both!

I did talk to her for quite some time. She has lots of family in the county that checks in on her daily (well...that's at least what she told me anyway). She was actually giving me a history lesson about the area. She's old, but far from being senile. She owns the land the old store and dilapidated shack are on. Her house is on the other side of the old store. It's a pretty beat up old house...but nothing as bad as the old store and other shack. I have to go back to pick up her dog to get it spayed....I'm sure she'll have plenty more stories to tell me. The only thing I really don't get is that she is sitting on about 100 acres. A 40 acre lot and another 60 acre lot that was her former husband's farm. If she has 40 acres...that means her family probably got it in the land lottery back in 1836. The Cherokee Indians were thrown out of North GA. and Western NC back then and the government had a land lottery giving away 40 acre lots....40 acre "stolen" lots of the Cherokee's former land that is. Most people that have these 40 acre lots means they've just been passed down throughout the generations....

What I don't get is why she won't sell the land and move into a decent place......I'm sure at some point one of her children or grandchildren will...from what she told me...quite a few of them are in the local county lock up on various charges.....like many around here....she is land rich...but cash poor. It would not hurt her to sell even a few acres and move into a senior residence to be looked after....but hey...it's her life. Sad too that none of her children will take her in. Maybe it's just me....that's the way I was raised. If it was my own grandmother...I'd put her over my shoulder and drag her kicking and screaming if she said no to leaving there.

i aspire to one day be as much of a do gooder as you, dave. although, you don't often find abandoned animals around my parts...

See, I knew that someone who cared so much about animals would also care about little old ladies.  :) You were probably the highlight of her day  ;) That will be a story she'll tell her grandchildren about...the day the kind young man came to help her dog.

yeah....but her kids and grandkids will probably just yell at her and ask her why she didn't sell the puppies to me....and then give them the money for cheap beer and meth! ???

Well anyway....I grew up with my grandmother living with us (my mom's mom)....I think it was embedded in my brain as being the "right" thing to do....though it's a good thing in her later years she was mostly deaf....i can't imagine any other way that she would have been able to tolerate the hours upon hours of my endless practicing all day! :D

Before I was born and my brother was still a baby my Daddy brought home two little beagles named Bert and Ernie. Unfortunately the breeder guy lied about them having their first shots and they passed away before they even turned 1.  :'( :'( :'(

LOL, amen to that brother. Growing up, my Dad played the bass so when my son took up the bass, it didn't bother me a bit. It was rather soothing to me but when I'm out in the yard & can hear it (or feel it), I worry that the neighbours will get upset  >:(.....I am thankful that he doesn't play the drums :o  ;D
