Now, for those of you who clicked, aren't you glad you're veg*n? Ugh! I can't imagine being within ten feet of any of those...
(Edited to fix typo!)
yuck.
humm.... most of my response is related to the fact that i am vegan. these all were pretty interested but really, really gross.
i can't get over how ethnocentric the writer is. really, yes, other cultures eat foods that we don't eat and that many might consider "yucky." but i'm sure there is a lot of US "foods" that people in these cultures would feel very similarly about.
i agree. the way he was talking about them...? i sent the link to my roomie because she said when her mom was pregnant with her she ate balut all the time.
Hysterical. Also disgusting. I'm pretty open to eating new things, but I think all of these are over my squick tolerance.
What a lovely read to finish my breakfast with. :P
I want the following on a t-shirt:

Thanks for that......really! :P
yuck!
My dad has eaten this cheese from Spain that has maggots in it. When he brought it home I could see all the little maggots moving and wriggling......I did not touch that stuff!! ewww
"Pacha only reveals its terror gradually. Sure, maybe you can get around the fact that you're eating face. But, the more you eat it, the more bone is revealed, until you give a final burp and set your cutlery down beside a grinning ivory skull. Its hollow eye sockets stare back at you with a look of grim damnation. "Burp while ye may," the sockets say, "for the same fate will happen to you--and all too soon."
We wonder why the Iraqis keep blowing themselves up? Wouldn't you, if every evening meal was a festival of death?"
"Yes, balut is upsetting on about a half-dozen levels. Sure, all meat eaters know on some level that the delicious chop on your plate used to belong to something cute and fluffy, which gambolled in the sun during the brief spring of its life. Most of the time, it' perfectly possible not to give a shit. But, when you're biting into something that hasn't even had a chance to see its mother' face ... well, it' different."
Hmm...I don't understand why people would have a problem eating certain animals and not others. About pacha- isn't every meal for an omni a festival of death? And...most animals don't ever get a chance to see its mother's face. Seems hypocritical to me...
How disgusting. Long live vegetarianism.

Ah!! I had already closed out of VegWeb when I read this article, but I came back to copy & paste this exact same thing!! First of all, this whole article really pissed me off because it is so ethnocentric... But, beyond that, this part in particular (above) makes me very sad... It is hypocritical to say that it's wrong to eat this type of egg because the baby never got to see his/her mother's face, but I bet the author is okay eating veal...? Or chicken, pork, or straight-up beef, for that matter. :'( "Most of the time, it's perfectly possible to not give a shit." That is really, really sad & sickening to me. I get that omnis have to have a certain sense of disattachment (is that a word? ???) & denial about the food they're eating in order to enjoy it, but it upsets me to see it in print, I guess... Ugh.

by the way he/she was talking i thought maybe they were a vegetarian... probably not, though.
Lutefisk is a traditional Christmas dish in the area of the States I was raised in, if you happen to be of Swedish ancestry. Thankfully, my gran was *Danish*...whew!! ;D I have to agree with Garrison Keillor, who said when his parents told him to "just eat a little," that eating "a little" lutefisk is, like vomiting "a little": as bad as a lot.
Christmas? Gimme some of that Nut Roast!

My aunt is Swedish and she used to cook a lot of holiday meals for the family. Thankfully Lutefisk wasn't one of them!! She just did the stereotypical Swedish Meatballs. :) I wish we were still speaking so I could get her recipe and veg*nize it. She made the best meatballs......
It reminds me of the show Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern on the travel channel except he respects the people and cuisine. To each their own I guess.
GROSS!!!!!!!
Really, no other word will suffice.
Gross...I agree, no other word will suffice.
I'm too scared to click the link.... :(
Me too, Capture. After reading all the comments you guys have left I think I will have to pass on this link for my stomachs sake... :o
I thought it was funny but gross. But then I think about all the disgusting and gross things people eat here in America; White Castle burgers being on the top of that list. I, too, thought the writer was a vegetarian.
