Anchovies in my peanut butter...
So...I wanted to make a peanut sauce on more than one occasion. I went to read the ingredients list of the peanut butter that i owned (just to double check, you know) but i knew i wouldn't find anything in there a lacto-ovo couldn't eat. So i get to the end of the list and am safe. Just for fun i read the allergies warning:peanuts lol...so i kept reading anf at the end...ANCHOVIES!!! Why the hell are there anchovies in my peanut butter i asked myself.
I am now petrified of anything containing peanut butter. Is this common practice to make peanut butter with these little fish? Does a main brand such as Jiffy have them in there even if it doesnt say so anywhere on the label? What can i do? I must be 100% possitive before I go anywhere near anytype of nut butter again.
PLEASE HELP! :'( :'( :'(
holy hell! THAT IS THE NASTIEST thing Ive ever heard!
Blend your own at the HFS...I'm gonna check my PB...I thought it was just peanuts and sugar.... :o and I have only recently started to resolve my peanut butter phobias! I'm never touching that nasty sh!t again!!!! :-X
:-X :-[ :-X :-[ :-X :-[
I would imagine that this peanut butter has added omega fats?
I saw a bread (forgot the brand) that had anchovy oil, and it was a special "Omega-3" or whatever bread.
Very nasty. Most peanut butters do not contain anchovies, though.
WTF???? :o Are you kidding? Anchovies? YUCK!!!!!!!
So Skippy brand Peanut Butter is vegetarian friendly? No anchovies? Promise?

where did you get that idea?

What do you mean?
That's absolutely disgusting. That's like eating off a dirty dish.
I don't understand why some of these companies don't get it. Say like I just bought a jar of peanut butter why would you think it wouldn't matter if they were a few anchovies in it? >:( >:( It boggles the mind it really does. And then people wonder why there are allergies (from the cross contamination that's not a fact but I do believe it does it promote in some way).
I think Peter Pan creamy is one of the greatest peanut butters around.
holy hell! THAT IS THE NASTIEST thing Ive ever heard!
lmao! ;D
If the anchovies were listed in the allergy warning, rather than the ingredient list, this is usually due to both items being processed on the same equipment. Even though companies clean their equipment, they can't guarantee to people with allergies that traces of the items in question are not possibly in the food.
Just checked my PB and no anchovies. Whew. Just" dry roasted peanuts, salt". Dipped my pinky in the jar three times and stuffed it in the back of the fridge. I feel guilty to splurge on peanut butter. :P

i agree, its probably used as a supplement of omegas. i have found that too, in other products.
also, since the concern over trans fats, you have to be careful of previously "safe" prepakaged foods...they may be reverting back to using lard/ beef fat...i found it in a "transfat free" pie crust.
ick.
What ever happened to "truth in advertising"??? The mind boggles, it really does.
What WAS the brand new_veg_head??
Hmm... also Smart Balence PB has added omegas and no fish.
Unfortunately, you really can't just assume something is vegan because it seems like it would be/should be...
That's why "read every label, every time" is the best policy.... (saying it out loud a lot for myself as well! I forget all the time. ::))
I hesitated to reply to this post b/c this is pretty disgusting. My son's grandfather is a food scientist and says that there is a certain amount of rat allowed in pb. That has totally turned me off to anything peanut butter.
Mmmmm. Nothing quite like a little rat to go with your jelly sandwich!
WHA? in all commercial peanut butter? WHAT? damn it. I love kraft smooth pb... I know it's so fake tasting, but I can't help it. I guess natural's the way to go...
I have a question though. what's the best, most ummy foods to have with peanut sauce? or what does peanut sauce go well with? I'm not much of a pasta eater... but my mom picked up a really yummy sounding organic ginger peanut sauce about a week ago, and I don't want it to go to waste.
Fried tofu!

I don't remember the brand name, it wasnt a big company, probably generic. Also I don't rememebr seeing anything about omega 3's in it. We don't have it anymore or I would tell you, my family scarfed it all down :o and luckily i never had any of it.
I have gotten into the habbit of reading everything and it can be kind of embarassing when i eat around my non veg friends because they want to give me food and i say "oh how'd you make it" in a non chalante kind of way and they will say "dont worry i checked the ingredients" and I will say nothing more but go and check them anyways and so far everything really has been edible from them. Some thing I find on my own however are not. 3 rices fromt he same company: broccoli and cheese, yellow, spanish. 1st 2 are fine, but spanish has chicken fat and broth in it. So i just read everything...
all foods are allowed to have a certain amount of bugs,etc...*though ive never heard of rats???!! ugh... in their final products. its all regulated by our wonderful govt.
so we should sleep, or eat, soundly. :-X :-X :-X
