Another Fruit Question

Thanks for the kiwi suggestions everyone but I have another fruit question.  In my freezer there is this bag that has been taking up space.  What's in it?  A whole pineapple.  It's been in there for months!  My boyfriend got it from work.  I thought of doing something with it but my mom told me it was no good.  She said you can't freeze fresh fruit  ???.  I thought that was odd because I know people who like frozen grapes and frozen bananas and I've bought bags of frozen fruit in the freezer section of the grocery store.  Can I still do something with this pineapple and finally get a little bit of space back in my freezer, even though it's months old?  Or is my mom right and I have to throw it out?

pineapple salsa?

you can freeze fresh fruit.

I don't know anything about whole pineapples. But I'd cut it up anyway taste a little bit of it and if it's bad I throw it. You lose nothing by trying this.

I'm willing to bet it's still safe to eat.  It won't thaw out and have the same texture as it did when it was fresh, of course.  Try blender-izing it and add it to any of the frozen fruit "ice cream" recipes on here.

here's one that comes to mind:

but I'm sure it would sub in nicely for other fruits in any of the other sorbet-type recipes.

Is it frozen whole or cut up in pieces? peeled?

It's frozen whole, not peeled.

You will have to defrost it to make it easier to peel. I would try defrosting it in a bowl so you can catch the yummy juices and then peel, chunk and use in smoothies.

Next time peel and chunk before freezing to make it easier to use. You can freeze most any fruit fresh.

Yes!  Smoothies!  Or thaw it out, chop it up and put it on pizza.

Heh heh.  For future reference, I find it easier to use frozen fruit if you sort of prepare it before freezing.  I freeze bananas all the time for smoothies, but I peel them and cut them into chunks first so they're easier to work with.  Otherwise you just have a banana that's hard as a rock...uh, then what do you do?  ;)  Good luck with your pineapple.  I think it's adorable that you just put the whole thing in the freezer.  ;)

You can grate it and add it to carrot cake or muffins.

Actually it was my boyfriend who was the adorable one  :)  I just moved in with him a few weeks ago and I was like "what the heck is in this bag?" ;D
I've never dealt with a whole pineapple before!

A whole pineapple in the freezer reminds me of "50 First Dates" because they have the freezer full of pineapples!

I'm down with the smoothie idea--sounds super yummy!!!

If you've never dealt with a whole pineapple before you might find this link useful:  http://www.howtocutapineapple.com/  It shows the easiest and fastest way to peel/cut a pineapple.  I wish someone had shown it to me before my first, very time consuming, pineapple massacre!

this is pretty much my same response to your kiwi question, but it really did taste so good!  puree and add some vanilla and pumpkin pie spice.  the best pineapplesauce!

Ha!  That there is a whole site devoted to cutting a pineapple is pretty funny!

Oh!  Just a side note...this might not work for your frozen pineapple, but my grandmother uses the tops of them to grow plants!  She cuts the top off enough so there is a base for the green stuff to stand up on, then puts it in a bowl full of water.  Eventually it grows roots (it takes a LONG time!) and becomes a really pretty plant!  She hasn't put one in the ground yet so I don't know if it will grown new pineapples, but it's worth a shot!  (Make sure you change the water in the bowl a lot or else it will smell bad and attract fruit flies.)
